Weekly and monthly leaderboards

  • I've heard some talk about people getting bored between expansions who are thinking about leaving SoT and I think it would be cool to add weekly and monthly leaderboards that give rewards such as voyages, gold, titles and skins giving people something to work towards between patches. I think this would give players much more to do in SoT and would create a fun community driven challenge keeping bored players engaged and giving everyone more to do.

There could be challenges for skeleton kills, cursed mermaid kills, kraken kills, distance traveled, etc. Along with making new encounters similar to fleets where you have to kill monsters, maneuver minefields, win pvp battles, fight boss battles, etc; rewarding loot and leaderboard points.

The breakdown could be something akin to this:
The top 100,000 would get a voyage that's equivalent to a gilded voyage
The top 10,000 would get 25K gold and the voyage
The top 1,000 would get a title for 1,000, 25K gold, 100 doubloons and the voyage
The top 100 would get a set for the ship or wardrobe, a title for 100, 25K gold, 150 doubloons and the voyage

This system would create value in these titles and skins that doesn't exist in with the pirate legend as there would be significant competition for the higher tiers as opposed to eventually hitting PL through normal gameplay. Due to this there would be many players who work to improve their skills in the game spending more time playing with their friends making memories to unlock these elite titles and skins. This would also create a place for more noncrew interactions resulting in more epic battles and unlikely alliances forming.

Unlike an expansion however this wouldn't just be made irrelevant by new content as the more content you add the more effective this would become. As a relatively small one time investment it would add value to every subsequent expansion and increase replayability making the day to day play more diverse.
This can also be used very effectively with both new and old content adding more incentive to explore a new world along with killing new monsters and bosses just as easily as it could bring new life and enjoyment into older content that isn't played as much.

I’d love to hear what everyone thinks about this and if there's something that could improve it, and what could some cool titles for the 1,000 and 100 could be along with some interesting color pallets for skins?

    Ps. Add crabs

  • @agentwookie What does 1st place get?😂

  • I do have a suggestion though. Locate a daily & weekly "top 10" for earnings, kills, and sinks in the Pirate Legends Hideout and have it update continually. One bulletin each for all the servers.

  • Great idea dude!

  • @cpt-parr0t-head Hmm first place could get a unique title, something specific to the challenge at hand perhaps. There could be titles like "minesweeper" for getting the highest score in a minefield or "boom master" for most barrel skelli chain kills ect.

  • Sea of Thieves is, in all honesty, not the game where this kind of feature fits. The developers have mentioned that they do not want leaderboards, as it will only lead to people talking down to players that aren't on it or haven't been on it. We already see this in the community with certain Pirate Legends deeming all feedback from non-legends as invalid. While I understand most of this is intended to be a leaderboard of PVE related things, I truly don't believe a leaderboard is what Sea of Thieves needs. It wouldn't be long until people ask to see their k/d and see leaderboards of this.

Many multiplayer games nowadays have some way to earn a "rank" and then display it. Many of these games suffer from the problem that their community bleeds toxicity because they have to compare their ranks to one another to determine their value in a game, rather than just playing the game to have fun.

I really, sincerely, hope that Sea of Thieves does not go down that path and does not include leaderboards. Show off you achievements through your titles and customizations (which there should definitely be more of). But lets not make Sea of Thieves a game where an arbitrary assigned rank determines your value; when it basically would mean that the top of the leaderboard would be filled with people that enjoy repetetively doing the same thing over and over again.

Which is fine, but the problem lies with how the players that don't care about the leaderboards would be affected by this. It would lead to a toxic community, when we have enough toxicity going around between the people who call anyone who doesn't solely pvp a "casual" or "noob", or someone who sinks their ship a "griefer".

Truly, I understand why you want this. And I think your idea is well thought out. But I just don't think it is right for this game, and the kind of game & community the developers want to create.

  • id been cool with just leaderboards and a gilded if we complete the entire bildge rat event or any of them. The exploit on the gilded was abit much last time

  • @erinom3

I understand where you're coming from entirely and I agree in most other games using leaderboards they keep permanent records such as k/d, total wins, highest killstreak, etc; which people use to exclude and discriminate against other players. This is different however because they reset each week/ month only giving a title or skin to show for your accomplishment.

Unlike permanent leaderboards every time the same competition comes up you start at zero with everyone else regardless of what your previous score was giving everyone an equal and fair chance to make their way to the top. Beyond that though the variety of options for what the competition is based on allows for every player regardless of their in game strengths and weaknesses to excel and make it to the top of the boards that week. The best PvPers in the game won't be the best PvEers some people are great at killing the kraken but not finding chest others are great at riddles but struggle with killing skeletons.

You will always have people who exclude because they're a pirate legend or any other endgame title in upcoming expansions. This system however is based around inclusivity as it allows every player to show their strengths giving everyone a fair and equal chance to get rare and unique titles; while simultaneously giving people who have issues killing the kraken a reason to invest time learning and bettering themselves instead of trying to run away or just scuttling to “save time.” There could easily be 4 different leaderboards running at a time each focused on different elements in game giving people more options on what to work towards if they are having issues in the focus area of a leaderboard.

  • I'm not interested in your Epeen.

I'm not even interested in my own.
