I just spent about 30+ minutes doing a skull fort on my own. I finally got to the captain. I though maybe I should kill the other skellys first, get my row boat close, and finish off the captain. Well with two regular skellys and a captain left I somehow died. I came back the captain was gone and the two regulars were still there. Killed them looked for the captain...nowhere. looked up. SkI'll cloud was gone and all the loot still locked. I searched this F****** fort up and down and there is no key. There were no other ships around the whole time, as a matter of fact I hadn't seen a ship in hours. I also searched around to see if anyone was sneaking sleeping some where as I was fighting waves. I can't believe how many bugs are in this game. This alone makes me want to uninstall...

The forts can now despawn
For Dave Jones' cursed soul, since when and especially why is that?
Frustrating enough, when the Skellet ships dive down exactly when it took you on your sloop half an hour to catch up and to get them ready. Then I think they recognized the hopelessness of their situation and fled.
But forts are static.@goedecke-michel since the Shrouded Spoils update when they enabled the rest of the inactive forts on map to become active. They also lowered the time for forts to spawn, for example yesterday I did a fort and after 10 mins another popped up. Also there is a small chance for you to do a fort go away with the loot and then the same fort you did becomes active again.
@mister-dabbs
Hello Mister-Dabbs. This sometimes happens but mostly with the regular Skeletons...All you need to do is sail away untill you don't hear the music anymore , then return . Be warned that the Skeletons in the defensive towers are back but you have beaten them once ,so you can do that again...If you land on the Fortress you will see that the whole Captain wave will have respawned .After you have beaten them , you will get the key and can , hopefully, enjoy your hardearned treasure , Sir. But please, don't unstall , it would give you a feel like you have cut in yer onw fingers ...1 of these 3 things happened:
1: The fort despawned
2: The captain got stuck inside a wall/rock
3: Someone was hiding on the fortBased on the fact there were 2 skeletons left and no captain, I’m going with option 2. If you were at Lost Gold Fort or one of the new forts, it’s highly likely the captain got stuck. He can still be killed but you probably won’t be able to get the key out unless you reset the island by leaving.
All of the above mentioned things indeed, and the most important tip I can add is:
Sail with others, you'll just spend 10 minutes clearing a fort saving 20 minutes for grogg.
Just find a nice group that likes the same things as you and sail with them. In thos 30 minutes I'd have cleared 3 forts with my friends.@siriondb said in Solo skull fort defeat, no key...kill me.:
The easiest way is just to cannon yourself away from the island and grab a mermaid.
I've blown myself up, fallen to my death, drowned, been eaten by a shark, and simply sailed away - all to reset an island...
...and then you have to say that and give me a forehead-slapping moment? 😒The things that I still learn from this game never ceases to amaze me. 😅
