I'm renouncing the cutlass

  • Until they remove the instant double shot exploit, I am joining the smart players who realized a long time ago that double gun is the way to go for pvp. Any suggestions on which two I should use? Pistol, blunderbuss seems the best so far for faster reloads. It really is a shame it has come to this, but frankly, the number of people macroing the double shot is just getting out of hand, I need to master this "skill" myself.

    My reasoning:

    1. Cutlass is basically only good if your fighting just one player at a time, since the other crew will typically just shoot you otherwise. If you do manage to kill more than one with a cutlass, you probably could have also done the same with two guns since they obviously can't hit you anyway.

    2. The risk of missing a shot / running out of ammo really isn't as big a deal as I thought. Just bunny hop away and reload while they swing at you aimlessly XD.

    3. Numbers advantage means so much in this game already, this is just a way to make the game even more about many players you have in your crew vs the other. It's like what people realized for the skeleton ship battles, you only need 1 hole if you can defend the holes yourself, and sending someone over to board is a lot easier and safer if you have the numbers advantage / enough people to repair on your ship. How do you get a number's advantage? Killing them instantly of course!

For skeleton ships, players take advantage of the weak AI in this game to win with fewer resources by killing the skeletons when they try to patch / body blocking shots. In PVP, using double guns seems to be the obvious way to tilt the fight in your favor with as minimal effort as possible (i.e. taking as little damage as possible and killing the opponent as fast as possible). It just seems too good, and as outlined above, the benefits of succeeding with the double shot far outweigh the risks.

  • @calicorsaircat I had an entire answer for you but then forums had a hiccup. Sorry but I don’t want to repeat everything I said so I’ll give you the gist. Cutlass cancels movement and can do combos to kill someone with ease. Dodging can help skip away from some bullets. I like to do eye of reach and cutlass to get the range and then one slash them after they take a bullet. If you suck at aiming the double gun only works if ammo chest is near so you don’t fully deplete supply. Cutlass can hit more than one entity, player, skeleton, etc., where as double gun can only go one at a time or two depending if you want to take longer.

  • @weststormborn The problem is that cutlass is a close quarters weapon and all guns do equal damage at close quarters, except the blunderbuss which does more! So my issue is that in pretty much all situations where the cutlass is good, double gun is at parity. Cutlass is only good if the battle is happening away from ammo boxes, but honestly, where it is important to win a fight is usually at your ship, where ammo is available. If the enemy crew is grouped so much that you can hit multiple, and they aren't killing you back, they probably are already destined to lose regardless of load out.

  • @calicorsaircat I will say eye of reach does more damage then a pistol at close quarters and at farther distances there is no change in damage by distance except for blunderbuss as you stated since it is basically a shotgun. I have found that I usually stop them from aiming at me when I slash them in the back which gives me an advantage when I can combo slash then shoot and their just dead.

Edit cutlass also helps when you don’t want to wait for reload or camping out the ammo box when other people are low or out on ammo.

Ahoy there, not sure if you've come across this before but it's proved a very popular source of tips for sword use -

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/33162/training-with-subzarr-advanced-swordplay-guide

Also this guide by Crew of Thieves has some suggestions to counter specific weapons

  • @katttruewalker that’s cool. I never checked out a guide before but learned through a bunch of experience and a few helpful hints by other players.

  • @katttruewalker Never seen this guide, but I know all these tricks. Cutlass is the most versatile weapon no doubt, and these tricks will certainly catch a noob off guard. But a better trick is killing them in one volley.

  • Cutlass beats all 2 gunners... i like Swing a Cutlass each Hand!!!

  • We usually laugh at anyone who tries to double gun against us. Can't think of a time when I was killed by anyone carrying two guns. We usually pack cutlass and blunderbuss, but I do think if you are good with a pistol or eye of reach they are better and more versatile combos with the cutlass than the blunderbuss is.

With a high enough sensitivity its more than possible to take on two people in a duel with swords if you have good timing and think about your positioning on the ship.

That being said I might try double gunning for a bit and see how that goes.

  • Double guns is strong, but so is cutlass. Each has their advantages and disadvantages. If you have 2 guns you can't sword lunge to board. You can kill multiple people simultaneously with the sword, and it's waaaaaay easier to hit someone with a sword than it is to hit them with a gun when they are monkeying around. The biggest advantage of double guns is the ability to kill someone before they get close enough to use sword.

Personally, I get more scared when facing someone with double gun than I do someone with a cutlass because I am confident that I can outplay with the sword in most situations. However, anyone with 2 guns can potentially get 2 lucky/good shots on me and kill me. I still use the cutlass though and if someone is using double guns and they miss either shot I will almost always kill them, and you can get most people to miss a shot by using a sword dodge.

The sniper pistol combo is pretty common because it is reliable at any range and any 2 shots will kill someone. A more interesting combo I've encountered is the sniper blunder. You shoot first with the sniper. If you hit, it's really easy to finish someone off with the blunder even at medium range (the spray makes aim much more forgiving and you don't need many pellets to do the remaining damage). If you miss the sniper shot, you still have the one shot potential of the blunder to fall back on. Harder to hit, more risky, but more kill threat than if you had a pistol.

  • Cutless is great when you are boarding and anchoring and they have 2 guys trying to lift the anchor. I used pistol, sniper for awhile then realized how much more efficient the cutlass is up close.
