Anyone else finding a veering in the ships?

  • Anyone else finding that their ship is veering? For us it’s happening a lot and is really inconsistent, sometimes it’s just a little and sometimes strait is with the Golden thing at the bottom left. It really annoys us and we submitted a ticket but nothing came of it, so anyone else?

  • Do you mean your ship travels away from course even if your steeringwheel is in the middle? Sorry if i asked a stupid question but my dictionary is lost again...If this is the case then that is a normal happening...i bet you sail a sloop or Brigantina? Both ships cannot withstand the wind without drifting a bit away...Little by weak winds ,more by stronger winds...i'm not a real life sailer but i think that in reality smaller boats needs to be adjusted too...

  • @clumsy-george

Also the waves can change the course of the boat. Check where the wind/waves are going and place your steering wheel slighly ti the left or right

  • Center the wheel, watch the compass. You'll see it slowly turn. So trim out the steering to compensate. Adjust until the compass is no longer drifting.

  • It's almost like steering a real boat/ship...

  • I think it was added in one of the updates after launch but, yes, your ship will veer if you don't keep an eye on the course. It's most noticeable when sailing westwards on the map too

  • @realstyli That was in the alphas! hahahaha

Was it? I wasn't part of the alphas... But I didn't notice it as much during the final beta or launch... It seemed way more noticeable after one of the post-launch updates... shrugs

  • Yeah, noticed it but I believe as others have said, it's a feature. Wind, waves, and an unmanned helm will take you to parts unknown or a watery grave if you're not posting your lookouts.

  • @realstyli I was on the scale tests and lunch untill now, and always my ship was veering. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Also some friends of mine were in alpha and I asked them and they said that it was in the alphas,

Ah okay... I guess I'm just dumb for not really noticing it during the closed beta or at launch

    sorry

  • @realstyli No problem, we are here to give feedback to rare, and to learn something new of the game.

  • Your ship is being pushed by the swell, or waves not generated by the wind. It's not a bug but a really neat detail that shows how dedicated Rare is with regards to delivering realistic sailing mechanics.

  • Ah, okay thanks =)

  • Sometimes the swells are so strong you have to fight them with brief full rudder in one direction or another to stay on course, pretty awesome really. :)

  • @dutchyankee Yeah i noticed that, very suspicious.

  • I wrote it off to just the normal stuff while out sailing on the seas but lately I have had my ship parked with the anchor up and the wheel straight as can be and it will very slowly turn. Might just be my imagination or another factor but I swear, parked in multiple spots, in multiple ways, with calm waters it slowly turns itself.

  • The wind and direction of the waves have a big impact upon speed and handling.

If you hit the waves at a right angle to their direction you will surf down the back of the wave gaining speed. If you have full wind in your sails when you do this you'll pick up even more speed. If you ignore the direction of the wind/waves you'll lose speed and get knocked off course.

  • They've definitely tweaked the sailing mechanics recently to be somewhat more realistic.

  • I thought I noticed it to work like carving.

If the wind is coming hard from the left, pushing the mast off to the right, the shape of the boat in the water will cause it to turn left gradually. So if you have a hard lean, you will carve faster.

Actually very neat now that I think about it.

  • Ahoy maties!
