Cursed Sails and the silence cannonballs..big mistake

  • So I've read somewhere that one of the cursed cannonballs types available with the Cursed Sails will block all crew communication for a brief period of time . No voice or text chat when you're in the effect range. It's hard to find people that actually use game chat but after these cannonballs will be added to the game no one will use game chat to bypass the effect of the curse. Can we get some confirmation if they'll really be added to the game? I just can't believe someone at Rare would push this awful idea forward.

  • It only blocks in-game communication. Meaning in-game text and in-game voice. Third-party programs like Discord will not be affected, and can be used to bypass the silence curse.

  • You read it somewhere... That doesn't mean it has to be true. Could be pure speculation.
But consider this general tip: if you got a crew communicating (at least via voice chat) invite them to Xbox party (works as well on PC) so others can't hear you in battle.

  • It's not like people are going to go out of their way to go on discord just to avoid ONE of the many cannonballs that are going to be in game.

I use dirscord all the time AND I use in game speak. (seriously X-Bone needs a push to talk option)

So much yes. That would be way easier than opening the group chat and hitting the view (2squares) button to switch to game chat then again to get back to party. Bind it to right stick click or something. Would be awesome!

    Ahoy there @Captain-Surgee!

There's hardly any information available about cursed cannonballs or the effects they have so what you might have heard is probably nothing more than speculation. I believe nothing was said about how you'd be able to obtain these cursed cannonballs, how many you can have, if you can pick and choose the effect, the range of the effects or the time the effect would last.

With effects like dropping anchor, making a crew drunk and as you said silencing the crew, it's a good way to cause panic on a ship I can see how that could be seen as a negative things, however I tend to take the positive road and trust Rare in balancing the effect by making the cannonballs rare/limited and the effects short.

I'm using game chat almost exclusively and for me having some effect disable it, wouldn't be a reason to suddenly stop that. I very much doubt this will be THE reason for people to abandon game chat. I really don't understand people that are always on party chat, especially on Xbox where it locks you out from ingame communication completely.

We'll just have to wait and see how things will actually work on the 31st, it's never as bad as the horror ideas some people can think up.

See you out on the seas!

The reason people on xbox are always in party chat is that PC has a serious advantage in that area. PC players can hear both party chat and game chat at the same time but can communicate without being heard. On xbox there is a trade-off. Or you hear other crews and can be heard (game chat) or you can't hear other crews than your own (party chat). I finally tried SoT again last 2 days. I sank almost 20 crews from which only one person said only 2 words f*** y**. Thry surely were communicating between each other so I guess discord and party chat. This really sucks. Back in the day almost everyone were in game chat. I play on PC but I find discord and unfair advantage that ruins the game in a way. It should be like on xbox. Party chat or game chat.

"The people on Xbox" aren't "always" on party chat, that's just a generalisation. As I said I'm almost always on game chat and I'm usually on Xbox, most of the crews I sail with also only use game chat, which already makes the genelisation (as all generalisations usually are) false.

I've met loads of people that use game chat, not as much as I'd like but still more than enough. I think people are usually less talkative to people that are actively trying to sink them which seems to be the case for you as you described sinking 20 crews in 2 days time.

I disagree that it should be the same on PC as it currently is on Xbox because that would remove even more people from the game chat. I think it should be the other way around that you can still hear others while in party chat on Xbox. I wish it was possible to make it unable to mute ingame chat, however that's just not a realistic option.

To bring it back to the OP as you described though, I still very much doubt that people that are currently using game chat would be scared off from using it because of the addition of cursed cannonballs. I don't think it's a mistake at all, I think it's going to make ship to ship combat more dynamic, fun and interesting.

  • @fishst1ck I have to disagree.
In the alpha times, when I was getting close to another ship I could hear the other crew panic, yell at each other, making up some tactics, laughing. It was an amazing experience that made Sea of Thieves fun for me. Nowadays because of a push to talk these awesome situations never happen to me anymore. I can no longer hear the other crew communicating between each other because they're on discord. The only time I hear other crews speak is when they specifically talk to me and most of the time it's offensive stuff. That really takes away from the experience.

Honestly, do you hear other crews doing their own thing like you're not around? I highly doubt but if you do, then you're very very lucky. In the alpha, my crew always had one spy hiding on the enemy ship, trying to get some info about the treasure or their tactits just by listening to the crew. Now it's close to impossible.

I don't really see what you disagree with here as I said that I would like game chat to be more of a thing. I also feel like we're sailing further and further away from your original statement that cursed cannonballs are a big mistake. It seems that you're saying that everyone is already on discord or party chat and if that's true cursed cannonballs won't change anything.

To answer your question, yes I do still hear people talking and doing their own things when they don't know I'm around. However most people developed a spatial awareness to spot other ships and mermaids and tend to be more careful and quiet then. It doesn't happen with every crew I meet, but I'm also not really into hunting others. Most people I meet, I'm the first to talk.

I think a lot of people are still willing to talk to others when it's about doing things together, however most realized it's better to be quiet when someone's around. I'm not denying that there's people that only use discord or party chat, however that's definitely not everyone.

For the people that already use party chat or discord, a "silence" cannonball won't change anything. However I also doubt it'll make people that do use game chat move to party chat or discord because they got silenced for a bit.

  • These Mario kart cannonballs are going to do more then push people into party chat. They will definitely push people to party chat but I think the tone of the game is going to be ruined. It's just too wacky. Wacky is not good.

When I heard that I felt the same way. instant thought: "Well THAT's STUPID in a game where they have issues with players properly communicating anyhow!"

I disagreed with you disagreeing with me, lol. Push to talk ruins the fun and thrill of knowing that you gotta watch what you're saying because other crews can hear it. Not allowing PC players to hear game chat when they're in private chat would be a step forward IMO (like it works on XBOX). Today was Day 3 in SoT since I came back from a long break. Still didn't meet a single crew with open chat. Most crews were pushed to talk crews on PC (it's easy to figure out) and one completely silent crew, so could be PC or Xbox private chat. In the alpha, before lots of PC players came in with discord, the chat in the seas was way more active. Now a lot of Xbox players go to group chat to have the safety that PC players have. End result = silent seas with occasional f*** y** going through the push to talk. Right now being in-game chat brings nothing but disadvantages, thanks to the PC advantages. You can't deny it.
