Scuttle your ship at an outpost

  • This may have already been posted around in the forums, but I have been noticing this a lot more lately.
Recently, when I got to outposts sometimes I notice that a ship had just sunken there. The first time I was confused and just went to the outpost only to find a four man crew was hiding and waiting for me to port. They killed me, grabbed all my loot (which consisted of quite a few large items), then sunk my ship. I thought that was just going to be a one-time thing and moved on, only to find out that this was going to happen several more times. I've heard stories from several other people about how this has happened to them as well.
Some may argue that "This is a pirate game, what do you expect?", but I just don't think that this is valid in this case.
I was trying to think of some ways on how they could fix this but can't seem to figure any out. I don't think making the outpost a safe zone would work. What are your opinions?

When they scuttle a mermaid pops up, watch for the mermaid, circle your outpost before stopping as the mermaid may be on the backside.

  • @kittygopoof I scuttle my ship at port all the time.

I'm usually solo and just want to hitch a ride on someone's ship for lawls. I usually just wait on the dock or tavern top dancing, more than half of people just avoid that island all together.

    I guess this is why.

Always scout the island before going in, especially if you have nice loot

  • @kittygopoof also it's by far the slowest way to get loot, so not really worth the time to do it. I scuttle my ship at outposts when I'm done playing. But usually log within a minute or two of that as I finish shopping. You may have caught them doing the same. Can't say for sure of course.

  • lol - this has to be a joke. If it's not...

OP, when you're headed for an outpost make sure to search the water for mermaids.

    /thread

  • @kittygopoof
Why would they fix what isn't broken?!
It's a valid and clever tactic.
It's nothing new... It happens since last year. Camping and waiting to frame others loot isn't wrong.
Wrong is you not noticing they are there, or worst, know they are there and still going handover your stuff...

  • If you have at least one crewmate have them fire themselves over to the island to scout it for you.

  • @kittygopoof honestly the error falls on the pirate that doesn't fully check his surroundings. When I turn in i check for the same thing every time. Is there sails? Is there a mermaid? Do I hear any voice chat? If the answer is yes I go to another out post or launch a skill crew member to shore to clear out the rabble to make it safe for us to reap our rewards.

  • @ve111a Yes, I have done all of those things. I wouldn't complain if I hadn't done all of these things. I would be wasting my time and others with this.

  • We sometimes scuttle our ship cos its just patchwork n planks and that seems inherently less storm proof etc but we never camp the outposts

  • @nunoazuldimeter I check my surroundings everywhere I go. It is the obvious thing to do. How is it a clever tactic when you sink your ship and wait for others and take their loot? You'd spend $60 on a game where you sit behind a building and kill someone?

  • @rattlyfob Yes, like I said with others, I always check. I go around the island just to be sure.

Sitting behind a building and waiting to kill someone.... sounds like call of duty xD

  • @kittygopoof Well if these things are checked it's impossible to be caught of guard. If there is no ship and someone is on an island there will 100% be a mermaid. They can be easily missed that's why we circle or have someone on the mast checking prior to docking.

  • It's been propably just bad luck.
It never happened to me, and im lvl40+ on all factions already. I was thinking about doing that myself once (maybe with a gp-barrel in the goldhoarders tent..)... but if u think about how long it might take to wait for a ship (it will propably be several hours), its just a huge waste of time, so very few people actually do it.

Just go to another server, you'll be fine.

  • @ve111a The times this has happened to me I've been playing the game alone. After the first time, I've been circling the outposts looking for mermaids. I'm not sure what to tell you if I have not seen one.

You're not checking well enough.. it's obvious when there are a mermaid on the waters. You can spot it.
You may see them observing you. It sparkles..

And yes it's valid. Devs have said so many times we're free to do whatever tactics we want to do, including waiting others on outposts and outside the forts.

Work to be better then them and to be more aware instead of complain about them doing it. It's possible. Believe me.

  • @nunoazuldimeter This is only my opinion about this. I personally find it pathetic that people waste their time doing this. If you enjoy squatting in a bush waiting for people then that's your thing! I hope you enjoy it (:

  • Yes, yes. "Be every watchful!" "Scout your Outpost!" "Keep yer' head on a swivel!" etc, etc. These are all true, and important... BUT, since when would a real pirate EVER scuttle their ship as worthwhile tactic?!

I think this is where the game could improve.

If you scuttle a perfectly sea-worthy vessel - for restock, for ambush, for anything other than someone spawn-camping your boat, it should immediately cost you gold. A LOT of gold! I'm thinking 5k offhand. This would solve the "problem" with outpost campers. Sure, you could still do it, but it's probably not worth the cost. Unless you wanted to do it the right way and drop your crew off while one sails onward. That's totally pirate.

Sinking your boat, or just sending it ghost sailing off into the blue (which is my current favorite) is just not very pirate, and would have been monetarily unthinkable.

  • another post about PVP?

  • @kittygopoof
Yep sometimes it is my thing.
I made it sometimes when I think it worth the effort.

But people have tried this so many times on me and on my crew to. And I am always aware about that and always avoid it. So I know it's possible..
That's why I'm telling you to get better and you'll be able to avoid it too.

  • @twitchtv-mohky I did this a couple nights ago. I loaded into a game and saw a Sloop with its lantern's on. I scuttled and waiting in ambush. I noticed he wasnt coming, so I ran around to the front of the island to get ready to mermaid and ran smack dab right into another player. I killed him, ran to his ship, got in the crow's nest and went to sleep. He got on the ship... sailed out for a couple minutes, then I hear the boards cracking.

He was a noob and scuttled his ship on accident. Was pretty funny.

  • I'll do you one ever better - Scuttle your ship just before it sinks when trying to take a skull fort. You'll spawn close by the fort instead of halfway across the map to continue griefing Snowflakes. Need I say it...? Pirate :)

    Stay Salty

  • @kittygopoof You can find it whatever or however you want. Its still a valid strategy.

I do this when I see a fort thats up. I open my map, see which one it is and pick the 2nd closet to the fort. People never go to the firt fort. Ive gotten stronghold chests/skulls easily this way:

    1. Go to inactive fort, get kegs
    2. Go to second closet island to active fort
    3. Unload kegs, put them in strategic areas (in bushes, around corners)
    4. Wait for galleon
    5. Verify whats being offloaded
    6. Shoot keg when they are close (normally get 1-3 people doing this )
    7. Mop up the remaining crew members
    8. Turn the good stuffs in

Don't be bitter that you don't have the insight to do it. This is great for solo play.

Easy fix....be observant. If you see a mermaid....don't go there.

  • My favorite is hiding a gun powder barrel near the traders and hitting it when a player is 4ft from turning the item in. The rage that ensues after that makes me happy.

  • @skyewauker This is awesomely pirate!

...and I will be watching doubly for powder kegs around my outpost now.

  • @captain-arcanic I wouldn't have to resort to such villainy if they had a "small crew" server option. I simply cannot compete with 4 man crews as a solo player. I can clear an island or down a galleon, but cant do both at once.

Before the "find a crew" posts come, ive tried the random queue in game (GOD AWFUL, NO ONE SHOULD EVER ATTEMPT IT) and I've tried discord. I haven't had much luck with galleon groups.

So this is how I get me booty, yaaaaaaaaaaaar.

  • @captain-arcanic Its amazing how many people will walk right on by powder kegs, like they aren't even there. Its unreal.

personally I don't like it and I won't do it. for many reasons. I feel it shows a lack of skill and ingenuity. Also, My crew mates would not be patient enough to be bored in hopes someone shows up. I prefer to go out and hunt my own dinner instead of delivery. however, I don't fault people for it as it is easily countered and it just creates new stories and experiences for me. I've had people try to camp us before for outposts and returning to a skull fort. We detect and destroy to protect our booty.

  • @skyewauker As helpful as your post was you didn't need to add that last bit. I actually thought this was useful information and was glad for the ideas. I was merely stating how I, personally, found this annoying. **

  • @tommyhangout Nope! I enjoy PvP, just was wondering about this. (:

  • @kittygopoof It definitively breaks up the monotony of fighting skeletons.

  • @kittygopoof The best way to fix it is to not go to an outpost with a glowing mermaid in the water. That's generally a giveaway that people are there, especially if you watched the ship sink. If you watched it sink then decided to go turn in within a few minutes, you don't deserve sympathy. They're obviously going to be there.
