SSD Vs HDD on Sea of Thieves

  • SSD Vs HDD on Sea of Thieves... Does it really make a difference on this game? Has anyone tested it? I'm keen to know as this will help me decide if I need to buy a new SSD to get rid of my regular HDD

I run HDD but my friend who I play with runs SSD I find he has 10 seconds faster loading into the server than me that is about it but my HDD still loads in faster than a console which is around 15 seconds behind my load in.

  • @mad-jack-ketch Load times into the game are faster, I'm always 1st into the tavern with my crew. That's about it to be honest.
You wont notice much difference other than load times. From the dev thread about LOD (distant objects far away popping into view) running on an SSD its meant to help with that too but cant confirm as when i use my spyglass using mythical settings i see far off objects still floating in midair due to other models being considered too far away to render.

  • well i play mine on a ssd and my crewmates all have normal hdd and i'm ingame loaded cannons and set my colours/flag/figurehead and scrummaging for resources by the time they are down at the ship.

I am also unsure about the render distance I do get the same kind of glitches as you but I have found the xbox can also see as far as I can see the ship will disappear at the same time and such so I don't think there is if any render range difference.

  • Would this affect spawn times too back from the ferry?

Ill test that later I'm unsure on that one as it feels random sometimes for me its quick sometimes its long, I found its more longer when your in combat situations

  • @mad-jack-ketch Only if you were experiencing long load times on the ferry using a normal hard drive. Using SSD, those black screen times are generally not too bad.

  • @kermitdafrog91 Agreed. I thought i'd get peoples opinions on this as my 1TB HDD is like it's a 2006 HDD sluggish, slow and a Piece of rubbish. It stutters with games and whatnot. So hence the question above :)

Yeah I mean it's worth upgrading to eventually anyway just for the fact that it will make your whole system a lot faster & reliable on all other aspects.

Yes, it hlps, the time from HardDrive (HDD or SSD) is from the SSD much faster then from HDD, that means your Graphic card is able to render earllyer then from HDD..

But you will not see more or have a higher distant/textures.. the game api is asking for texture 123456 and not the dirve.

at least that is how i think a SSD will boost it.

If you can, got a SSD and wipe the HDDs out!

  • @oxynator I know it doesn’t increase FPS or any of that, but I’m happy with my cursed settings till I find the perfect computer for me :)

not that true bro... it can help stable the FPS when you have I/O Errors on the HDD it will cause fps drops.. (at least at the Demo scene, so i think it is the same)

  • Sorry for the necro 🤭. Does anyone know if the sea of thieves hard drive is ssd or hdd? I’m r******d when it comes to this kind of stuff & mainly just want the fastest load times I can get. If I can get a blunderbuss as well then why not?

    It's a HDD

  • @murkrage Disappointing. Thank you for the reply.

  • Yeah, I run SoT from my SSD and I'm always first to load in. Friend on PC loads in about 10 seconds after me, then friends on Xbox One load in about 20 seconds after him.

AFAIK, it shouldn't affect spawning from the Ferry (black screen time) as I think that was deliberately balanced to be as equal as possible for everyone. Also, the PC/console will have already loaded and have all the assets still in memory for respawning so it does have to do much loading anyway.

  • SSD improves loading for EVERYTHING you do on your computer. Period.

Takes me 13 seconds to load to the "hit any key" screen.

Loading from the "Set sail" screen to ingame took 46 seconds.

  • @mad-jack-ketch PC or Xbox? And which Xbox? It'll absolutely make a difference on a pc, I can load into a server several minutes faster on a PC with a SSD then standard Xbox One. However the original Xbox One also can't even make use of a SSD all that well, so improvments will be marginal. I believe you will see better results on a Xbox One S Or X though.

Difference from the ferry is a couple seconds maybe.

Edit: s**t I just realized this was from months ago and got necro'd but comment stays in case anyone else needs the info.

  • @mad-jack-ketch Hi there, i had SoT on a good HD to begin but now is on a M2 SSD. The loading time difference is quite big for me, around 15 seconds i will say, plus before in game when i was approaching an island i had one or two seconds of stuttering, now is smooth like butter.
