Refuse to buy a $60 game with micro transactions!

  • Just so everyone is aware of this. Microtransactions are going to be added to the game 3 months after launch and it will only be cosmetic and if i remember right the extra cosmetics are things like pets and stuff that are just fun things you can mess around with

  • @killerdaftpunk That's... odd. Micro transactions will only come when the first ""expansion" comes out - in 3 to 4 months - and will be completely optional, with no gameplay impact (except emotional one) and as a side thing. There's definitely no coercing in this game at all. No loot boxes or randomized items. No stronger items either. A big example given by the devs was the ability to buy a pet. No abilities, just a pet that follows you and you can throw with the canon, let others grab, etc.. I honestly ubderstand where you coming from but it seems to me that by those standards this is actually the game to get and support. Specially when there are no new 60-70$ games without actual coercing and scummy system attached anymore

  • I'm very happy to see microtransactions in SoT, I was worried about it. If we want a game with continous updates and contents we have to support the guys who are working on it. I really hope SoT becomes a game like WoW: Infinite, with a long journey on its own.

  • Oh lord. Most of this thread is just fanboys defending microtransactions. It's pathetic to read.

    "It's just cosmetic".
The entire so called "progression" is just cosmetics. So to progress in the game you may have to spend real money. And this INDIE game is 60 dollars!

  • @killerdaftpunk thanks for letting us know goodbye and good luck.

Are you serious? THIS types of microtransactions are the right way to makes a game like SoT. This is not a Tomb Raider or A Last of Us where you finish the game and it's over. SoT is a MMO like. This is why games like League of Legends can be continuously supported. If you can't (or won't) understand that, than play other games.

I am serious. Remove your goggles for a sec and realize that microtransactions are not welcome in expensive games. Stop enabling them!

Ok, let me see. You are saying that microtransactions are not welcome in expensive games... but you want a game where the developers supported you, your fun, over the years. But you don't want that other people (not you) supports them. Seems legit. Like I said, this is not a pay to win. It's a pay to support, simply stuff.

  • 60$ is nice, in europe its 70euro.....that mean 87$ actually ^^

  • @killerdaftpunk said in Refuse to buy a $60 game with micro transactions!:

I keep seeing all this news about Sea of Thieves and it seems like an interesting title, but I'm just a single person giving my opinion. I am passing on Sea of Thieves for the sole reason of micro transactions. I understand a live game needing money for servers and such, but I would rather pay a 5$ subscription to play a game then be coerced into buying different game options even if they are only cosmetic. I feel micro transactions are just a pre cursor to something worse so hopefully other people feel the same and can show developers how we feel.

Sounds like this person has not been watching any of the videos from the Rare developers... showing just how much they are not keen on micro transactions to make players better than each other, it sounds to me like it is purely on cosmetics and adds extra ways to make the game more fun.
These will not be the be all and end all of progression within the game, I'm quite confident of that much.
I feel like future releases and updates to SoT will be nothing like that of GTAV Online.

  • @monkeyyak 1# its not an indie game, also the microtransactions as far as we know are only pets which can be earned legit?

  • I like the way Rare approaches microtransactions. I'm not a fan of it but I certainly understand that they need to make money to support their game. The alternative would be to buy those dlcs/expansions which I really hate since their introduction. Not to mention that dlcs/expansions split the community between those who buy and those who don't. Look at Battlefield 1 for example. 70€ for the base game + 40€ for their premium pass (which was always mediocre in past games imo) which splits their community, and on top of that a way to buy battlepacks. Pretty standard today and I hate those business practices.

Seriously. Rare is going the right way. They're not splitting up the community and they don't go the pay-2-win route. More power to them for not being scummy towards us unlike the majority of game studios and publishers.

  • @misterdoomed 60€ per hour, please call me and I will work for you in anything you need for that price.
Here where I live the jobs avaiable to young people pay around 5€/h

Better stop hunting dinosaurs then. Its not worth the risk for that kind of payment @wTurok ;D

  • @killerdaftpunk If you don't want to buy a cosmetic cat or parrot then don't. They have zero game play impact what-so-ever. Also, while you may want to pay monthly there are just as many if not more people who refuse to subscribe to games.

You could never spend another cent on this game after buying it and have the exact same experience as someone who spends $1,000 on pets.

  • @monkeyyak It's not an indie game... Rare is owned by one of the most wealthy companies in the world. Where did you get Indie out of this? An since it's all cosmetic none of it is really progression it's just stuff.

I do not like micro transactions, I do not like predatory systems designed to milk people of money, but I'm also willing to accept a good faith attempt at something that is usually done in a manipulative way.

These aren't loot boxes or randomized stuff. It's "Do you want to buy a cat? Yes or No." That's it. You don't need to, it doesn't change the game, nothing. It's just something you can buy but you can just not buy it.

  • You sound like you're just regurgitating comments you've heard about other games that offer pay to win micros. SOT only offers cosmetic items and by not buying them you will incur no negative effects...

  • @killerdaftpunk a $5 subscription fee is actually coercion. you are forced to pay $5 just to play the game. no matter the amount, it all adds up if you want to play the game for ___ years/months or how ever long.
the style of micro transactions that rare is planning you literally DO NOT need to spend a single cent. personally I would prefer the choice of not spending an extra dime and be able to play for 5 years and reap the benefits of the people that do sink their cash into the game so more content comes out. compared to spending $300 over a course of 5 years. I also personally won't give a damn how "fancy" looking other people appear after buying clothes from the shop. it will not hold the same weight of seeing someone in legendary pirate clothes. at least you know how each person obtained their items. one you know worked hard to get, the other you know they forked out $__.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if this guy was just trying to get a reaction out of us. you'd think that he'd respond and try to counter argue other people. nope. he just leaves his post and disappears.

  • subscription service would murder this game, you dont console players paying a sub for a game. MT's are optional, especially cosmetic, a sub is not and is a requirement.

If you refuse to play this based on the cosmetic mt's and thats fair enough, its your decision and I respect that, how have you played near enough any game released in the last couple of years? So many games have mt's atm andI despise it but at least Rare's are optional cosmetics, I would welcome that anyday vs EA's money grabs.

Although if you want a sub model, theres always gamepass for like £10 a month...

  • I like yor logic regarding the Subscription......
Most subscription based games have micro transactions and you have to buy the base game. SoT has free expansions post launch and is a subscription free game, as a service with the option of micro transactions. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

  • @killerdaftpunk

Buy this magnificent game and don't buy the microtransactions,,,, problem solved....

Or don't buy the game, just play it GamePass because it's $10 a month for a ton of great games, and spend your extra money on micro-transactions.

@killerdaftpunk You could pay a $10 subscription if you have an xbox and buy the gamepass. I have very few concerns about this game but I figure $20 for 2 months of testing is fine even if I buy the $60 game I don't mind also don't mind missing out on cosmetics from pre-order as I don't ever pre-order.

And if you home share on the Xbox that cost is halved!
My brother-in-law and I game share and will be playing this through the gamepass - he buys and I send him half the money!

  • @KillerDaftPunk Sorry I accidentally linked a Monty Python video on my last post here lol. Let's try this again.

It's not accountants trying to make $1 into a $1.1. It's an industry trying to mitigate ever increasing costs in a market where the standard cost made years ago is unrealistic for games made today because of inflation, people's expectation of improvement in graphics and reliable servers etc.

Also I think it's good there is micro-transactions. It means they can keep the servers active for longer

EDIT: Removed timestamp so the video begins from the beginning. Today's not my day

  • @souleaterst1ch Exactly this. I couldn't put it any better.

  • @killerdaftpunk I've posted this many times and no one ever seems to respond (because there is no good response). If you play this game for ONLY 10 hours (way less than we all know we are going to play), you are talking about $6 per hour of play. Name one thing that you can do in real life (that costs money) which is cheaper than that? Hell, movies are like $15 a ticket +drinks and snack which ends up being well over $7.50 an hour. I shoot pool for 6.95$/hr. Sporting events (depending on your seats) are even more expensive. If I go out to dinner it's usually 15-25$ for the entree and then more money for drinks and dessert (microtransactions?)

Bottom line, $60 for a game is nothing, if you can't afford that without thinking about it you should probably consider working some more instead of wasting your time in front of a screen.

Rare is (by all accounts) doing MTX the right way. I also liked how ESO did MTX. I HATED how Bungie did MTX and we all know how bad EA did mtx. People need to grow up and get a little perspective. If $60 is too expensive for you, get a part time job.

  • If you don’t buy games with micro transactions then your game collection must be pretty small. Pretty much every game in the past five years has had micro transactions. You’ll be sorely left out.

  • I'm know this has been covered numerous times in the replies, but:

    1. Any in-game purchases are purely cosmetic and give you no edge over any other player.
    2. Any in-game purchases are not random.

That being said; I have no issues with micro-transactions in games PROVIDED they are cosmetic only (as they are in Sea of Thieves).
As a rule I never buy in-game stuff with real money--however, if cats become available in SoT, I may have to make an exception to that!

I agree, however people can buy the microtransactions if they want while the rest of us are still having free dlc and updates, like gta. So unless they make it too grindy like gta became, I htink overall its a good thing.

  • You pay 60 dollars and then you are asked to pay more. You fanboys keep saying this game is like nothing else and then I see arguments like "almost every game has these, so why wouldn't this one have microtransactions too?".

The game could be made by God and it's still an indie with little to do but play dressup.
If a single cosmetic is locked behind a pay wall it's a scummy tactic and it should NEVER be defended by its customers.

  • @void-presence The only thing the game offers are cosmetics, so how do you then justify "cosmetic" microtransactions?

Also, they don't plan on selling a nice hat. For now, we know they'll be selling pets. Which MIGHT not be accesible otherwise. They haven't told us anything about pets being obtainable through playing the actual game.

  • The thing is the only time microtransactions are warranted IS when they are only for cosmetics. Some people may not want to pay subscriptions monthly to play a game they already bought, but if they want to they can pay money to get that pet or outfit they want. I just think EA really f***ed up the idea of microtransactions for everyone so no one will want them.
