Xbox One X Support

  • The closed beta apparently didn't include any kind of Xbox One X support, the game ran at 1080p / 30 fps on the more powerful console. I wonder if we know what support we can expect on Xbox One X.

I personally would like to see 60 fps support (even at 1080p) next to a 4K/30 option because honestly, the difference is night and day between the two. Is there any official confirmation about the Xbox One X Enhanced specifications?

  • @dreampage The Closed Beta ran at 720p/30 fps. The Xbox One X version will target native 4K/30 fps. Slightly more information on the Xbox One X version was given here: Official Sea of Thieves Behind the Scenes: Xbox One X

  • @perfect-code
I really hope performance mode is an option. SoT doesn't look like a CPU heavy game so it shouldn't be a problem. 1440p/60 would be perfect.

  • @captain-surgee I play at 1080p still and I'd like a 1080p/60 fps option as well. Dunno if 1440p/60 fps is achievable on the One X for Sea of Thieves but yes, the more the better!

  • @perfect-code halo runs 4k/60 in campaign and mp and it looks heaps better than SOT. I think UE4 is more than capable. Usually CPU is the bottleneck but in SoT there's hardly anything that can stress cpu a lot. Hopefully Rare is looking into it.

Dreampage, good to see another ED alum on these boards!
I have the One X and I have to say I hadn't noticed the demo wasn't running in 4K. Just goes to show how beautiful this game truly is.
Now I'm looking forward to launch even more.

  • @originalzulkai Thank you very much. :) The game does look spectacular, I agree. That's why I think framerate should be more important than pure pixel count. The game looks great even at lower resolutions but framerate has a direct impact on gameplay and playability. It's simply much better at 60 fps.

Digital Foundry has made a comparison video and while the Xbox One and Windows 10 versions look very much alike, the framerate difference is huge between the two.

30 fps would not be acceptable on the Xbox One X as it's the most powerful console out there and it should provide the same gameplay as the Windows 10 version. So I hope Rare doesn't go the easy route and instead of just increasing pixel count they will provide an option to run the game at 60 fps.

  • @dreampage
I doubt the cpu would be able to handle running a large open world game at 60fps.
If you are the type of gamer that is concerned about framerates etc, you should have gone the pc route!!
Console gaming will never be able to equal the performance of a high end pc, & i am a console player, so not biased towards pc.

Yeah I was a bit disappointed by their Sea of Thieves video. Seemed like they got a few things wrong but we'll see if that's the case at launch.

So I hope Rare doesn't go the easy route and instead of just increasing pixel count they will provide an option to run the game at 60 fps.

It's not an easy route doing native 4K at 30 fps, but it is an easier one than also adding a 1080p/60 or 1440p/60 if achievable.

1080p/60 on the Xbox One X should definitively be an option. Would also help balance slightly the gap in performance between what is capable with the PC version.

  • I played SoT in 4K at EGX in Birmingham shortly before the Xbox One X came out, it was very very good looking :p

  • @logansdadtoo It only depends on how the game itself works. If it's CPU bound then you're right but honestly, Sea of Thieves doesn't look like that. With the exception of water simulation there doesn't seem to be much physics or objects and characters in the game world. It looks quite simplistic stylistically, and also quite empty and static technically. It's still beautiful, but seemingly nothing that would be taxing on CPU.

That said, there are still many games that can achieve 60 fps compared to the regular Xbox One's 30. It's a matter of developer will and time/resources. Given the cartoony style of Sea of Thieves I would very much like a 1080p resolution option with 60 fps movement. Framerate would have a bigger impact on playability and experience than what the lower pixel count would take away.

  • 60 fps 1080 option please Rare, I beg you.

  • @dreampage 4k 30fps, here's the official video!
