Making or breaking the game

  • So I've been testing Sea of Thieves for a couple of months now and there is 1 massive difference between the closed alpha sesssions and the open beta we've had in the past days. In the closed playsessions players were friendly. Like, honestly friendly towards each other. You weren't locked in the brig as soon as you joined a party and even other crews didn't immedeately open fire once you're in their reach. Like I said, I played some sessions before. The open beta however gave my best friend and my brother the opportunity to play as well. Ofcourse we had a lot of fun and it was nice to see them learning the game mechanics so quickly.

However, I noticed that my brother was acting like the majority (whom I encountered) of the players in the open beta: hostile. As soon as a ship sailed by the island we were on or as soon as he saw a ship in range, he opened fire upon it. I read through the forums quite a lot and saw a lot of fellow pirates complain about this type of behaviour. Personally, I'm standing right in the middle. I'm aware that new players want to experience everything first hand. Which also means naval combat. They want to experience for themselfes what it is to be in an open sea battle or to shoot other crews. I admit, being in an open sea battle with another Galleon is just epic and will create memories for sure. I think that it just takes some time for the dust to settle. Once the game is a couple of months old the seas will probably calm down a notch and people start being more friendly since they now know what it is to be in a battle. Give it some time and things will work out is my personal opinion about that.

Moving on to the game itself. Without having inside knowledge about what Rare's plans are, I think they've reached a point where they can make or break this game. I know that in the Beta a lot of stuff was kept out purposely. I'm aware of that. However, this game has so much potential and with the hype that lives within the community, they will let that community down if they deliver a game that just isn't living up to it's expectations. I know that ship customisation is a big thing for, like, 98% of all players. And yes, you will have the opportunity to customise your ship. But I don't like the idea of Galleons being ''unlocked'' straight after you're in the game. I think that every player should start in a sloop, and make money by completing quests or through trading with the trading company (that was missing in the beta but was in a trailer). After one aquired enough gold, he or she can buy a Galleon. In the meantime, the player could customise their sloop. Once the Galleon is bought, the sloop is ''stored'' somewhere. Then the player can continue their quests, make more money and customise their Galleon. As soon as the player wants to go solo again, he leaves the party he's in, connects to another server and picks the sloop, to find himself back on his own sloop, customised and all. When a player wants to ''show off'' his Galleon, he/she needs to go into the lobby again and when clicking on the Galleon image, he/she has to have the option of wanting to be a captain, or a deckhand. When one chooses to be the captain, he/she has to wait untill 3 deckhands join, and then they will spawn at the Galleon of the captain.

As far as other progression goes, I've read on the forums about having your own Island. And that idea sound as music to my ears. However, I'm aware that having your own island on the map can and will create chaos after a couple of days. But take GTA 5. Players can buy property on certain fixed spots on the map. Once you're in there, you can store your car safely and be free of all harm. I think something like that could hugely benefit the player experience of this game, especially when you can kind of customise it as well.

  • As a former tester on a popular console game with armored tracked vehicles I can understand what you've experienced. Every now and then the test program would open up to new recruits. These new testers would yolo or start shooting/destroying vehicles even when the test was simply to find map glitches, asset clipping issues or unintended exploitable areas. It took a while for things to settle down and quite a few 'discussions' with more senior testers about proper conduct during a test. So I think what happened is that you were used to that testing atmosphere and play style while you brother and the majority of the pre-order 'testers' were here to play the game. Which I believe has been the root of the problem with some of the posts about the game. RARE simply wanted more testers and feedback on some mechanics within their game before launch, but didn't want to spend the time processing thousands of NDA's. I had gripes about this Beta for the first two days, until I found my way to the forums and read a bit which triggered my testing mentality from before, this alleviated a lot of the frustration that I had previously.

Having your own island would be interesting, though not sure if RARE would be considering investing the time and money into that, but who knows could be a future DLC. I think I'd rather see something akin to EverQuest2 housing if we get a Social Island with plenty of large buildings it would be nice to 'rent' a room or house there which would lead into your own instance to invite others to hang out, display trophies and paintings or plot your next nefarious pirate scheme.

  • @caidalibree You have some unique ideas there! Never thought of having to buy a galleon but now I'm going to be sad if that's not a thing in the full game lol.

Sorry to say I'll always be a "hostile" pirate but that's only because it will make it easier to buy things if the ships we sink have chests in them! -To be fair if my crew recognizes their name tags 10 seconds later we won't fire first. But I feel this is more of a problem with how the game handles spawn locations.

There was a wheel next to one crew member in alpha and beta, and feel like this might be the designated "captain" whose custimized ship the lobby will use. If this is the case I certainly agree getting to choose to be captain or deckhand would be a great addition!

  • @conal-cuan Exactly. And I don't blame them for shooting first, asking questions later. But I also understand the frustration this can cause to other players that just want to enjoy the game too. When in previous testing sessions I boarded an island and saw another ship incoming, I always ''signed'' to them by flashing my lantern. Sometimes they'd sign back, other times they didn't and went on with their own journey. Again, I don't blame the bloodthirsty pirates that have been in the beta, but I can also understand the frustration.

About the social island: I think something like that can be considered as a good alternative if a ''personal island'' can't make it into the game for whatever reason. Although I think that's a whole other discussion that has his own Megathread as well, something about Safe zones ;) I understand that things like this can cause the Devs some serious headaches. We'll just have to wait and see what they've got in store!

  • @sour-patch-mcoy Thank you Matey! I presonally think that having to buy your own Galleon is much more rewarding in the end. When you're sailing your own Galleon you really do have something to show off, especially when it's fully customised. Also it gives your gold a purpose. Ofcourse you can buy stuff already, but this game is all about piracy and when you think of pirates, you think of ships.

And to be fair, when you buy this game, you have every right to be as hostile as you want, since you spent your own money on it, you decide how to play it, as long as you dont grief, etc. I like your crews own pirate code though, that's admirable :)

I've noticed the wheel too, but whenever I invited my friend and my brother, the wheel randomly changed to one of us. Maybe it's not working as intended yet, we'll see in time :)

  • Onboard with starting in a sloop or having to join a galleon as a deck hand, until you can buy your own. Wish there was some sort of penalty for losing your ship as well as mermaiding/dying to get back to a ship

  • @mattydove74 I think Rare is going to look a little deeper in the respawn mechanic when you die or when your ship sinks. But I think paying a small fee to recover your ship is fair enough. I think the player that is ''hosting'' the session, or the captain if you will, should pay the fee, since it's his ship that sank.

  • @caidalibree Hai, I commented in the Safe Zone Mega, though I'm not a proponent of that Social island being a safe zone. Should still allow for non-abusive 'friendly' scuffles or pistol/sword duels.
Aha! That's what the lantern flashing means. I thought someone was really getting into it with Morse code. LOL. Genius what non-verbal communication testers come up with. In tank testing we'd rotate our turrets to face backwards or waggle the turret left & right for "No shoot", up & down for "OK to shoot".

  • @conal-cuan Yeah, it's a hard nut to crack. Especially since this game is purely PvP, there are a lots or pro's and cons for safe zones. Haha, I wouldn't be surprised if there were some people that actually did some morse code with their lanterns! I just flash it about a bit and hope they've noticed. Sometimes when I'm on a sloop I aim my cannons all the way up so people notice I don't mean any harm. It's a bit hard to spot though, especially at night and when the eye of sight wasn't implemented in the game yet, hehe.
