Mermaid Exploitation

  • I've seen slot of players saying that the mermaid is being exploited. People jumping out of boats, attempting to board enemy's vessels by spamming X as they sail by. Suicide attempts with gunpowder chest. The mermaid, because it doesn't require anything in order to use, is basically a get out of jail free card. If you start to punish players for using her ability too many times, for example having to pay 100 gold per use of the mermaid, after three uses etc. She requires gold for Atlantis perhaps, haha. Either way, I feel as though this could potentially be a solution. Opinions welcome, as always!

    That would be a tad bit brutal, but could happen to someone if they don't have the gold to return after abusing the mechanic. Maybe the gold required to 'return to ship' doubles after each use?

  • This is a huge problem which a friend of mine and I unfortunately had to experience, too. We attacked 4 other seamen as we were only 2 and we had a very long fight, which eventually was ended by us two BECAUSE we had to maneuver our ship (steering and angling the sail, firing the cannons, etc.) and they could do the same but also 2 of them kept jumping into the water, trying to get onto our ship just by waiting until we catched up. If they missed, they just waited like 5-10seconds for their mermaid to spawn, ported back to their ship and jumped into the water again. They continued this for several minutes and eventually were able to get onto our ship.

    This could probably be evaded by something like "no mermaid spawn if your ship has recently (1min?) participated in a fight".

    I understand that this could be a problem if you get knocked of your ship from something like a cannonball or just unlucky jumping off of the ship.

    This needs to be looked into before launch!

  • I agree and disagree. Because for example we was mid battle running low on resources and wouled leave us being chased or ramming tactic which I hate. Therefore I use the merm if,I see,barrels or a wreck to jump and gather what I can.because mid battle you can't stop for supplies so you gotta do what's best sometimes then catch a merm or ferry ride back.

    But why gripe about the merm when its the same exploit with the ferry. Jump over purposely die by a shark come back it calculates if done right about the same time.

    But people can try for boarding bur much not difficult now with the sharks. So they catch merms which is silly. But meh if not a merm then ferry

  • A toll for the mermaid has come up in past discussions pre beta. I like the concept but it would have to be implemented carefully. It would certainly break up the constant trying/failing of boarding without risk.

    That said theres been alot of discussion of risk too which is something that is likely (hopefully) to be seen in the full game. Once risk is involved e.g tolls like you mentioned, working you way off the ferry of the damned (something ive mentioned previously), actual costs to retrieving a ship etc pvp would change alot.

    Alot of people have entered the game thinking its pubg on water but its not, its a shared world adventure game and the beta had zero risk to give the appearance of it being pvp centric but in reality its aiming to be alot more. Im excited to see how they implement risks into the game.

  • As I get your point, DevilsTassia, I think it's a key part of the game to care for the supplies on your ship. Yes, you may run out of them while combating but I don't think the solution should be to just jump into the water MIDFIGHT, grab supplies from barrels in the water and port back to your ship via the mermaid. IMHO Thats an exploit too.

    As there is already a topic specifically addressing people abusing the Ferry of the Damned, so I thought I would make a seperate topic about the mermaid.

    Which is why they need to be discussed? You said yourself it gets abused, so why not create a solution as a community and collective.

    Alright your stuck in water gotta pay a merm bring up the menu to pay while your reading to pay to see,if you have enough coins dang what happens a shark eats you well your on the ferry free of charge . then if you gotta pay to exit the ferry what happens if not enough coins longer wait time perhaps or no exit... Or not enough coins for the merm so you swim for a shark to die purposely .. Hey crew I'm outta gold checking out by a shark ..

    No matter how you spin it people will still do it.

    So you fix each issue one by one... That's how game development works, is it not? Death should be more punishing, however that is for a different topic entirely. For now, let's focus on the mermaid exploitation.

  • Mermaids could be restricted to use only while the ship is so far away. That would prevent use in the middle of a battle.

    My main gripe about mermaids is that they are automatic and visible to all. As a solo sailor, the mermaid frequently gives away my position.

  • @kinggzanga you are not grasping my thoughts on this at all . people will exploit in the manner of saying forget using merms altogether and die to go to the ferry if they are altered anyway

    I find them pretty well fine expect I dont want them visible to the enemies,

    And there is your second problem all merms are accessible by all players

    Perhaps if a merm is not yours you cant use it for one. There you go.

    But merms and death coincide, with the new shark ratio you can barely swim 5 feet before 2-4 sharks appear therefore moot point to make the spawn time for merm longer or farther because ferry you go.

    You can't pay when you possibly have no gold or the more you use it the more it costs people will say blah and ferry you go...

    You can't limit the uses as people will say blah and still jump then ferry you go.

    Point is merms and the ferry both have to be adjusted at the same time and mesh in order for both to work.

    With the time frame I have jumped and before a merm pops up I decide to get eat, because its based on how far from the ship you are. Why if we fall in we swim away to populate it quicker but roughly 80% of the time a shark emerges much quicker.

    I am, honestly! When you're thinking so broadly however, it's hard to convince you about the cons of such a system. All the opinions you put forward have validity and substance. Yes, they're all linked in some way and all have flaws at the moment, especially the Ferry of the Damned. Maybe if you don't have the gold you're indebted to her, choosing death instead would cost you 200 gold, I'm obviously thinking from the top of my head here. Surely there is a better system for the mermaid currently in place though and that's why I have formed such a topic.

  • Perhaps mermaids shouldn't be able to teleport you to a ship in motion? 'Ooops, I meant to teleport you to the bow. Sorry your head rematerialized into the main mast.'
