Will Sea of Thieves be worth it? Should we be worried?

  • I will admit, I have not played the beta as of yet. I don’t know if I will. At the moment though, from other peoples feedback, videos I have watched, and previous experience from the alpha, it seems lacking. I trust Rare to give us something to blow our socks off, but with barely a month or so until release, I am really, really worried. It is a fun game, with plenty of gimmicks and fantastic moments, and it does let you create your story, and have a great time. The only issue, as others have pointed out, is content. This has been an issue since the beginning, but before now I wasn’t worried, as “the in-house build has so many different things, it’s so much better, there’s so much more to come” and so far, that had held true. I was around before swords, and I remember being so excited to sail through a storm during the E3 demo, and solve all the riddles! The sloop gave me dreams of grandeur, of being the underdog and crushing a galleon alone, or swooping in at the last minute to save a fellow sloop.

I digress. From what I have seen, Sea of Thieves is not what I had dreamed of. I will buy the game, the controller, all of it, because I distinctly enjoy it. It is MY type of game. To most of my friends, however, I am forced to honestly say “At the moment, from my experience and those around me, this game is not worth $60”. $40, maybe. But the issue is replayability, lack of meaningful progression, and lack of content.

There is little replayability because of the lack of meaningful progression. I’m sure there are more cosmetic items out there, ready to be made, but how many are unique? All of them so far are just retextures of the same thing. The hats hold the same general shape, the coats, everything. There is no true uniqueness, but I can see this not being an issue, as they should be relatively easy to make. The ships, as of right now, have no customization what so ever. What has been promised since the beginning is not there. This worries me. This lack of progression extends further than this, however.

The lack of progression is not that there is none. You can progress in the guilds, unlocking more cosmetics and better quests. But what other bonus is there? You unlock better quests, you get more gold, you look like the snazziest pirate out there, but what of it? There is no meta. There is no competition, nothing to keep players coming back other than what they create themselves. Sure, there might be events. Maybe some interesting moments created. But where is the customization? There should be options for customizing your ship, how you see fit. You can put more cannons on the ship, but you will move slower and sink faster, due to being lower in the water. You can add maybe some layer of protection to parts of your ship, but once it’s penetrated water comes in faster, and you are slower due to the fact that you’re heavier. You can go faster by removing cannons, but that decreases your potential firepower. With this customization, it is still an equal playing field, as all buffs have a debuff, so to speak. There is so much more potential to this game.

There is a lack of content. A lack of things to do. This ties in with all points made thus far. Like I said, there’s so much you can do that YOU create. It truly is YOUR story. But there isn’t much offered from the game. The most fun I’ve had had nothing to do with the quests, nothing to do with PLAYING the game. It was when I met other people, and we created something great. The Great Alliance, 3 Galleons against the world! A fellow sloop and I taking down a galleon, then divvying up the treasure. Sure this uses the game’s mechanics, but not the system put in place that we have to play to progress. People chase others, spawntrapping and killing, because of a lack of other things to do. You get that excitement, that risk in a ship battle. Nowhere’s else, though.

TL;DR: this game, while fantastic and certainly great in it’s own right, is not (currently) worth the price tag. In a post-No Man’s Sky world, we have been promised plenty. A lot has not been delivered. I am worried for the game, but I will trust Rare until I have zero reason to trust them. I understand I am just one person, with one opinion. This game has potential, it just needs that extra push. Listen to us, please. @Labarge28 mentions similar points in his comment in the beta feedback tab, @General-Carnage makes a few points similar regarding the ship, there is so much potential for this game, I cannot stress it enough. But at the moment, and moving into the future of Sea of Thieves, I worry that it will not fully tap into that potential. If you read this whole thing, thank you. Leave some feedback, I would love to have a discussion about this. I apologize if anything I have said is incorrect, as stated earlier I was unable to play the beta, and don’t know if I should have.

EDIT: Also I’m sorry if it’s hard to follow, I struggle with writing coherently. I can try to explain myself better if asked.

  • @deadtree-alive Well wrote, im sure Rare is reading all these posts and hopefully they will actually have a reply for us soon.

This is just the beta and look at how the forums have become, this is just a small taste of what it's going to be like at launch if Rare doesnt start informing us more.

I personally believe the time for #SeaOfTease needs to finish and now we need some concrete information on the product people are going to be paying for.

But alas all we canndo is try and be patient and hopefull :)

I wholeheartedly agree. There should be something more worthwhile for me to play SoT . Like a:
    Pirate Code
    Pirate ranks
    Bounties
Clan Islands which can be raided with another clan
Items that can be stored and lost upon death or stolen

Just something that the Game enforces to make big communities and fight each other :P

  • @Graimet

Exactly! Something to get people to keep coming back. I don’t want this to be lost to the ages, as it truly is a fantastic game, with limitless potential.

  • @deadtree-alive Very well said, and thank you for posting!

It seems like this is a major concern for a lot of people involved. The fact we simply do not know what is to come is what really hurts. I have friends that stopped playing this game after 3 hours and said they'd never play again due to the lack of content. If I could easily explain to them what was going to be in the full release I would at least have that information to fall back on. Instead I find myself looking through old articles and interviews, and just hope that what the developers say is true. And like you pointed out, in a post NMS world getting players to trust developers is damned near impossible.

I have done as much research as one can do, and even if they did add in every thing they said they would, I am afraid the game would still be lacking in some ways. The good news is Rare can't keep quiet for long, as their game releases in less than 2 months. So hopefully we will hear some news soon on the concerns this community has addressed over the course of the Closed Beta.

Also, I understand there is a lot of community members that think this game is perfect and doesn't need to change at all. But let me send you to this article:

The gaming world is watching, and they are also concerned, but hopeful. Its only a matter of time before we know for sure if Rare can pull this off, or not.

  • I myself am worried about the longetivity of this product fetch quests(voyages) become dull and boring and incredibly far too easy( a 8yo could figure the clues out) without any form of progression.

I got concerned with the fact that a little out of two months before live and they've only offered a closed beta with very little to show in it. The pvp itself gets extremely boring quickly as well in a two man crew and want to sink a 4man galleon ram it then use your cannons watch how fast it sinks, vice versa for sloop vs sloop combat.

I'm almost tempted to treat this like PUBG only log in when i feel like ganking bambi's and if thats the case the $100 AUD pricetag is definitely not worth it since there is no filler to keep people playing for longer.

  • Sorry Rare - you had a chance to impress me, and not only do I look like a fool to my friends who had high hopes, you had me fooled for a bit as well. No longer.

  • Prepare yourself for a freshly opened can of rose tinted beans:

"There's going to be loads of suprise content in the full release remember this is a beta not the full game"

Except from what we've seen from the alpha and beta and mined data there doesn't seem to be much more coming for release. The price tag seems two times higher than it should be. Should release for 19.99 and after a year should release a "complete edition" when they've used their dev road map of patches to flesh out the game.

We shouldn't be paying full AAA price for what they will add in the future. It's like buying a car and getting the wheels given to you over the span of a year...

  • @ethnine This might be the first time i agree with an IGN article.

  • @darlain sadly i have to agree with IGN's review of the beta as well myself which is a first

  • @hotel-actual I am not trying to defend Rare here, but the information gained through the game files is neither guaranteed to be in the game, nor is what was found possibly everything expected to be in the game. These files are from the beta build, and even though they do hold information for the game as a whole, we do not know what additional information/files might not have made it into this specific build.

I also believe this information goes again the rules for something, so I am not even sure I should be discussing it. Basically take everything with a grain of salt, because my word we really have no idea what features we will see at release at this time. And that is indeed a issue for me and many others.

Luckily I got a free month trial of game pass with my Xbox so I can play sea of thieves free for a month before deciding if it's worth it.

Also discussing the data mine isn't a problem breaking NDA is ans I've not mentioned the details.

  • @hotel-actual Okay cool, I wasn't sure what the rules were concerning that. Glad we're both okay then. And yeah, I mean I am going to be watching people like yourself and streamers to decide if there's enough to this game to invest in it.

  • The short answer: no, you should not be WORRIED about a video game.

  • @ethnine
I haven't really wanted to mention the Data mine for the same reasons but there is a lot of clues in them that could and should put people's minds to rest about the game having lack of content. Considering some of the data, names and such are old, I feel this data is from a year or more ago and Rare knew it would be Data mined and made a decision to have an old build to deal with this problem.
After seeing it, I'm confident they've got enough content to satisfy people.
They just don't want people knowing what's in the game before launch, I mean...Spoilers spoil stuff a lot of the time, and discovery is what will keep this game alive.

  • @fullmetaljakee To some extent I do agree with you. Like if they came out with the Kraken and kind of spoiled the shock of it all, I would be a bit upset. But things like ship ownership and customization, weapon variety, and character creation? These are things that basically every game has, and use it as a selling point. It confuses me as to why they'd want to hold some of these things back and not gain community feedback concerning them.

  • you should ALWAYS be worried so you're never disappointed, I am 50/50 I'm not going to toss in all my marbles and blindly worship but I am also going to enjoy what they show at the moment and hope for the best.

  • @clumsy-george said in Will Sea of Thieves be worth it? Should we be worried?:

Wich compnay, please name one to shut my mouth ,throws out it's full AAA title for grabs in a Beta ?

World of Warcraft did in their Open Beta. So did Rift, if anyone remembers that game. EA did pretty full Betas on Battlefield 4 and 1. Granted they did hold back some weapons and maps, so I will let you have that one. Most multiplayer fantasy games though, they revel pretty much everything. I remember in Archeage you could basically do everything, the only things missing were some NPCs and weapons. World of Warcraft Open Beta was also fully functional, skills, weapons, even boss fights were in. Rift had even more during its Beta, world bosses and mounts, it was basically everything. I remember some towns were added in after the beta feedback to make the landscape seem more alive. Guild Wars 2 did the same thing, they added in some more towns after Beta Feedback, but generally everything that was in the beta was in the final release.

And again, the difference is with those games is we knew what things weren't in the beta. I didn't have to go to some interview from 2016 to find out if a feature was confirmed or not. I didn't have to go sifting through concept art just to confirm whether or not something was going to be in the game or not. The features were listed, I knew what was going to be in the game. I cannot say that about Sea of Thieves. Instead you have to be a member of the CIA to decrypt the information to confirm its existence or not.

  • @ethnine
I do understand that, but they have said that ship customisation and character creation will be in the game. That should be enough. I would also like for them to reveal more but I also like that they're keeping a lot back. They've addressed a lot of questions and concerns but not released to what extent these things are in.
The thing is, people don't Have to buy the game on release, they can just wait a few days to find out about a lot of what's in it, the release date could have been two days later than what it's set at, then they can decide. It's just a little impatience.

  • I think the having no progression is what gives this game replay ability. In those progression games dude I always max out my character and get the best weapons and armor before I begin any main story quests at all.
Once I’m maxed and beat the main story tho I’m pretty much done with that game cause what else am I supposed to do? I’m practically a god in this game now... no one can take me down... hardly anyone’s a challenge anymore... I’m at the end of the road with the progression I made... can’t make any more progress... soooo what now? (Puts down game forever)
With SoT it’s like Gary’s mod. You literally play to just have fun, which apparently games can’t do anymore because everyone wants some sorta story or progression like that’s the sorta s**t that makes a game a game. You want deep story and progression go watch a movie. You want some good pirate fun? Play SoT.
It deserves the 60 dollar price cause for one. It’s not fully out yet and there looks like there’s still so much they are going to add.
and for 2 other 60 dollar games are in the same category. They aren’t worth the 60 dollars you pay for them so honestly what’s the damn difference? Oh yeah. SoT has an open forum cause they care what people have to say about their game. Those other 60 dollar games don’t so you didn’t have a place to whine about their game.
Just enjoy the game for what it is. Instead we got thousands of kids acting like their the next top game designers.

    Garry's Mod is $10....

You cannot compare what is supposed to be a AAA title with a $10 indie game. Content is important, thinking its not is like thinking a cake will be fine without icing.

  • @ethnine

  • Overwatch was released without ranked play, one primary game mode, and a slew of balancing issues; a barebones full price title which little complained about. I can already tell the game is worth full price at launch, my only hope is that they continue to improve.

  • @megalo-sicarii You're comparing different genres. It would be like comparing Guild Wars 2 to Hearthstone. Different games require different forms of content because they have different audiences and different in-game mechanics. Sandbox games as a whole have a host of content that they generally leave at the feet of its players. Sea of Thieves does have some promising content, but its far from enough when compared to the standard.

  • I must say and I guess I'm an outlier here, but i have had an amazing time thus far playing the beta and i have sunk prob 8-12 hours into it so far, which is pretty reasonable. I can see how there may be a "lack of content" as so many have mentioned, but we do know there are 2-3 other factions to report to, boss battles with even more beefier skeleton captains, and the ever mysterious Kraken, and that's just from what we know as concrete. Even though there is only one thing to do, i cant get enough of it. I almost called out of work just to play this "beta" and its only a BETA! Makes me extremely excited for March 20th.

I actually made a comment to my shipmate last night as we watched two 4 person crews dual it out, that "Dude its actually going to be quite difficult for us as pirates to sail the seas when we have more we have to worry about." And this comment was because we sneaked onto an island to get treasure right around them , which was exhilarating. And its true, I dont understand why anyone would say a "low skill gap" because we get wrecked, we are not great pirates, there are so many things i have seen other "more skilled" players do. We have adjusted our play style every day to try and get better and still might get owned or realize if we would have done "this" or "that" we may have succeeded. We ended up joining their fight, and if you want something awesome , that 3 ship battle was intense. We had 45 cannonballs on our ship and we used every one of them. EPIC.

  • @ethnine
Did I compare price? [mod edited for language] no.
I compared the two games and the way they are enjoyed. If anything Gary’s mod should be 60 dollars as well if price and content are all ya wanna [mod edited for language] about. Also a cake without icing is an actual desert, and is very much enjoyed.

  • @ethnine It’s hard for me to see your point. If you compare games in the sandbox genre, there are few similarities between them. Sure, GTA has loads of content, but Minecraft started with little to none, but an infinite amount of potential through creativity. Comparing this game to those, I believe the potential, as in Minecraft, is where this game shines. That being said, to me, this game has more similarities with Overwatch’s release than any of the other Sandbox games. I believe our differences are in our expectations for the game. I see it as a pirate ship battle game with the addition of treasure hunting and the like. PvP first. I never expected it to be the Skyrim or Minecraft of pirate games.

  • @jollysaintknick Well aren't you just a ball of joy. Listen here, if you want to have rational conversation I am open to it, if you want to play your little troll games and start calling people names I will remove myself from the discussion. Sea of Thieves has more content coming, more than we know, but very little of it has been confirmed or shared by the developers. If you enjoy what the game is now then good for you, I have no problem with that. But that doesn't mean that there isn't an issue that needs to be addressed. The community has made it quite clear that there's an issue of communication between Rare and us, and part of that communication break is their inability to discuss launch features.

  • @megalo-sicarii
He doesn’t have a point. He barely read my comment even though he quoted it he had no idea the message I’m trying to convey. He probably didn’t fully read / understand yours either. He sees the word price or genre and he instantly flips your comment with a rebuttal that honestly woulda have been better left unsaid.

  • @ethnine
I don’t want to have a rational conversation with someone who doesn’t think cake is good. I don’t want to have a rational conversation with someone who can’t understand what I’m saying and refutes with something completely unrelated. It’d be just too much of a challenge and way too much work. I hope you enjoy the game even if the “content” don’t meet your expectations. Cause it really is a fun game once you look past all your “problems”

  • @jollysaintknick Dude, shut up. If you want to address me personally do it. You're doing nothing but causing trouble when I brought up some very valid points against what you posted. You can act like a decent person, or you cannot. But at least be respectful.

@Megalo-Sicarii They (Rare) has marketed this game as an Open-World Multiplayer Adventure Game. Now I guess the interpretation of that is clearly debatable, and clearly it could easily mean a lot of different things to different people. But the simple fact is they are adding in more content, things like ship customization and more weapon diversity. They're also adding in things like the Merchants Alliance and Bottle Quests. These things they have confirmed to be in the game make the game appear to be more in line with a MMO than it does anything else.

The issue I have though is things they've only hinted at, are still up for debate. Leaving the community as a whole to speculate, which can be dangerous as I am sure you are fully aware. Assuming things like pets and world bosses, or more ship variety and functioning ship upgrades. [See Gregg Mayles interview for referencing] leaves people to speculate and wonder what will be in the game or what won't be. And like I said before, leaving your community nothing to point to when asked "....what else is there to this game?" makes everyone look bad, including Rare.

If you haven't already, this is a good read from an outside prospective. I am not saying its a bad game, I am not saying the core of this game is bad. I am saying there is clearly something missing, and we do not know for sure what it is. And its that 'not knowing for sure' that has a lot of people concerned.

  • @jollysaintknick just say garry's mod wasn't an Indie game when it came out and uses an engine from a AAA game xD

Anyway, much gamers nowadays got spoiled by the rich storytelling and progression in games. Without it, for alot of people, it feels bland and boring.

For me I'm waiting for Rare to enforce some community efforts in-game. like clans, personal island, bounty hunting or what else makes me want to sail to kill some pirates! xD

  • @Clumsy-George

I wasn’t comparing them to No Man’s Sky, just stating that in a world after that fiasco, that they should be more open. I love the fact that I can make my story, and that it’s truly a game where the fun is made by the players. But there shouldn’t be a need for ALL the fun to be made by the players. Implement knife throwing, dice, blackjack, just something else that we can do. I am most certainly afraid of the seeming lack of content, but I still trust Rare. I’m just worried for the future of this game.

    @JollySaintKnick

I don’t want progression like what you said, with max level mlg pro bull. I want it to remain balanced. As it stands, there is no changing what there is. No balancing the pros and cons. I want there to be that choice of higher firepower, or faster ship. Faster ship, or more armor. Just to change things up a little bit.

  • @ethnine Your logic is questionable. Is the game an MMO, or a Sandbox, or both? I believe it can be both and more. If so, then it is also an FPS, since that is a major mechanic of the game. And if it is an FPS as well then by your logic it should be compared with games of its corresponding genre, such as Overwatch which is not strictly a one genre game. Some games are, but none of the one's listed have been other than say Hearthstone. That's my first complaint with you logic.

The next one is that you state that I should question the so-called limited content while you cite to a slew of additional content that I, originally, didn't care to have. It's certainly welcomed, but what the game is now is all I wanted. Even as just a beta, and when I played the alpha. The alpha less because I didn't have my brothers playing with me. Again though, going back to the expectations, the game is all I asked for and will be more upon release. Those are my expectations, and I don't intent to shove those down anyone's throat. If you have expectations that exceed what the game is or should be, either influenced by the dev team, youtube hype, yourself or wherever, that's on you. Don't pull me into your expectations. I never once asked "what else is there to this game?" Only, "will that be cash or card?"

  • @deadtree-alive The game is still in beta form and is not completely done, there are going to be factions from what I have seen and an economy completely based on the players, if anything this game will have more than enough reasons to keep you busy because most players will have jobs to do in the whole game.
