Dolphin Companions

  • Silly and somewhat foolish idea maybe, but I’ve been having this idea constantly.

We have sharks in the game, and not much else to join us in the water. We should have a slight chance to encounter a dolphin that we can tame with a raw fish in our inventory. The dolphin would stay in proximity to the crew’s boat, directly preventing boarders and sharks around the boat (or at least giving them some damage/disturbance instead of completely keeping them away). The dolphin would have the same 2/3-shot health as a shark, and upon approaching the tamed dolphin in the water, you should be able to grab around the top fin of the dolphin and hitch a ride. Swimming in the seas is slow and painfully boring, and a dolphin feels like the next best mini jet ski-esque water boost that could still fit in the game.

An anchored or stationary boat would have the dolphin circling the ship until it gets moving again and the dolphin picks a side to follow alongside. The dolphin should still actively help defend the boat too, damaging or harassing enemy swimmers and sharks that get too close while also making clicking/splashing noises whenever something is nearby in the water.

Idk if anyone else would like this idea, but imagine island hopping to get to an enemy ship thanks to your trusty dolphin zipping you from island to island (at least faster than rowboating and more stealthy). The dolphin should obviously be pretty noisy when being used by a player.

It could also help stranded players who lose their ship or get left behind by their crew, giving them a more fun way to travel between nearby islands instead of just slowly swimming or waiting on a mermaid.

Obviously there would only be 1 dolphin per crew, and it would obviously be disabled in Hourglass/competitive PvP gameplay. just a little bodyguard companion to further help your boat in the normal Adventure map without becoming some overpowered defense mechanic.

I just think the oceans in Sea of Thieves could use a little more life in them sometimes, and this feels like something goofy enough to actually fit the game pretty well.

  • dont witch hunt me but i had a little visual made up by an autonomous friend - https://imgur.com/a/0ZdfQxO

wasnt pushing for spot on, just a general idea with visualization, dont hate bc its ai :p

  • They're my favorite marine animals :)

I think I'd prefer an official emporium "pet" without all the utility. One I could name, put a collar on, etc. But the way it's presented here (session based; tamed with meat; limited health) seems fair and balanced with all the perks you suggested. Also, really good job on the mock-up.

  • We have sharks in the game

    barely...

not much else to join us in the water.

Mermaids, Sirins, Jellyfish, random fish. Anything dangerous would be a field day for people xD

    Slightly OP

Turning stealth boarding into a nightmare for those without one? xD

but imagine island hopping to get to an enemy ship thanks to your trusty dolphin zipping you from island to island

Yup...and if you dont have one yourself, your in for trouble. Kind of unfair.

Make sharks spawn more often is all we need. Helps prevent and slow down borders and free shark meat.

  • @burnbacon pretty valid mostly, but it only gets so stealthy, id imagine crazy splashing noises (like that of when a fish is fighting you) or some other loud queue when in use and diving by a player, which should allow the crew to react to the oncoming dolphin rider, i sorta forgot sirens exist but mermaids i would not really count, and jellyfish are just visual... sharks are an aggressive mob, everything but the fish you catch is an aggressive mob in the water (and your merm ofcourse), i really feel a passive or atleast neutral friendly ally in the water would be a nice balance,

sometimes the crew is parked up doing a quest and collecting from the water and maybe they dont have the food to deal with oncoming sharks (sometimes many spawn) or someone tries to tuck on the ship while they are down collecting sinking loot they could have something helping them get rid of the sharks or whatever else.

"not having one yourself" should be hardly considered unfair when realistically if 2 members sniped it in the water real quick it would die, if its focused its literally useless basically

but all in all, your shark spawn rate comment does make sense and could be used to slow down boarders yes, but as you said they like to barely come around, personally i rarely see them in the middle of fights, really only show up to bother you for being in the water too long..the things that could be :'(
