I was wandering....
How many SOT employees would actually play sot now a days?
Versus, how many used to play on 2020 or 2021?
I mean, really play it. In your free time. As a player, not as a job. For the simple fact of that you LIKE the game. and enjoying it with the intensity you pretend other players to enjoy it.
Probably the answer to that question is nearly impossible to answer for many reasons. Reasons like signed NDA or personal privacy. But I believe, on top of that, one of the reasons could be shame.
In the company I work (not gaming related BTW) the majority of the employees really believe that if you don't enjoy the product you are building, you'd be miserable at your job. So I trust in my collegues with what we build because we are going in the same direction with strong values. And if not, we know that somebody should be looking for another job.
I have the fantasy of visualizing Rare employes in 2021 playing the game after office times for fun, and when they see something they don't really like, start to rant along the hallways of the Rare offices and pushing bug fixings on top of the priority tasks list screaming "we can not go live with this, guys!" because they want to keep the quality. Versus 2025 where people just open Jira looking for the lowest hanging fruit issue and working on it during days while nobody really pays any attention to the final result saying "I don't need to play it. That's why we have an UX department in [insert a city name here, probably in Asia where it is cheaper than Americas or Europe to get IT services]"
I bet that the number of players in the company has descended drastically
... and... just in case you read this post thinking "I will explain things here" ... just don't =)
