Re-Work Athena Hideout and/or Sea Dog Tavern?

  • This game is purely cosmetic and commendation based for playing. It also has amazing potential for socializing, but out on the High Seas it's obviously hit or miss on if that interaction will be good or not. As someone who loves to PvP, I still often go out of my way to play friendly and try and meet people, but if I am attacked back it's game on. I would wager that for a large majority of players though, they might not be great at PvP and so they will run from anything and attack anyone who comes near them out of fear. All of this is totally fine and as the game should be on the High Seas, buuut I think it would be cool for pirates to have a place to hang out and literally just meet new people, talk, and show off or see other cosmetics. If Rare redid the inside of the Sea Dog Tavern and possibly Athena's Hideout to be a sort of separate lobby server before raising anchor and setting sail in High Seas, it might be a good way for the community to interact with each other.

Pirates could load into the lobby server if they wanted or opt straight into the High Seas. The lobby server would be completely for meeting and yapping with other pirates. It could also serve as a place to find crews or wait for your friends to jump on while you do whatever and meet new people. We spend all of this time to unlock the Athena Hideout and then you get there and it's completely empty of other players 98% of the time. Having a place where pirates can load in with no weapons, throwables, etc. and just hang out, chill, and do whatever would be a great way to also onboard lots of new players, who might not understand how to play the game because of the vast amounts of things to do, but would be willing to listen to other players in a lobby like the Sea Dog Tavern or A.H.

I know this idea has been thrown around for many moons, but I think it is still a valid request to have. Also, if anyone is being toxic in the lobby, just mute them and then they will get bored because they can't attack you or anything.. So, I really only see positives from this proposal.

  • Definitely a fun idea, but there are a few problems I can kinda foresee. For one, I imagine it would be annoying to a lot of players to spawn into a lobby first, and then go onto the proper servers to do stuff, since it would probably be considered a waste of time and just added loading time in many players' eyes. Closest thing we have to a PvP-free area is the Ferry of the Damned, and to be honest the only reason people want to stay there is to specifically be toxic and rude, and I imagine that might be similar for a PvP-free tavern or something similar.

That said, I do think something like it could be fun, it is a bit sad seeing a lot of areas in outposts and ports with taverns that are almost always completely empty, because unless you're really into roleplaying as a pirate, you're just there to get some loot, raise emissary standings, and get commendations.

Maybe something worth experimenting with is having outpost taverns and other very specific areas restrict using weapons or throwables, so pirates can just hang out and talk to each other without fear, but knowing how some SoT players are, they'd find a way to exploit that and use it as a means for griefing.

Second paragraph of my OP: "Pirates could load into the lobby server if they wanted or opt straight into the High Seas."

Second to last sentence in OP: "if anyone is being toxic in the lobby, just mute them and then they will get bored because they can't attack you or anything.."

No, Outpost Taverns need to be fair game, since Mysterious Stranger is a hand in area and it would be kind of cheap to run and hide in Taverns will on an Adventure server and not be able to be attacked, etc. So, might as well do it for something like the S.D. Tavern that already had an entire area of the inside created by Rare. It's not an Outpost Tavern, which means it can be fair game, and it's a large enough indoor space to accommodate a lobby server without feeling crowded.
