Disconnecting and Losing Progress

  • When I disconnect I would appreciate for when you respawn your stuff you had is still on the ship and skeleton ships, megs, and other horrible things cant kill you. I will be fishing for hours and then I lag out and join back having lost all of my things. If this happens again I wont be playing SOT anymore. I shouldnt have to be scared of losing my things everytime Im on the open waters especially from a skeleton ship.

  • @gracie3090 you are in an online environment that is shared with other players. It is not a offline experience and the game cannot be paused just for you

If you are fishing for hours that time could have been divided up with short sails to a seapost.

never keep more loot on board then you are comfortable losing.

If you lag out or lose connection you have a 10 minute window to reconnect.

  • @callmebackdraft Im not talking about other people. Im saying that If I disconnect just respawn me on an island with my stuff and not where I was if Im not in a fight with a real player.

  • @gracie3090 Ahoy matey!

Everything in your pockets and barrels should be safe if you disconnect and sign back in... Your ship, however, will be as you left it... so if it was sailing into a rock... it will still be sailing into that rock.

But if you can quickly get back in and join your previous session you should be able to rescue it?

Already in the game ! Restart the game and choose "Yes" when asked Join Previous Session?.
It doesn't work for Lazybeard though.

and skeleton ships, megs, and other horrible things cant kill you.

You're not in the game so they can't kill you, but they probably will still attack your ship.

Items on you should still be either in your inventory or in your barrels IIRC; fish on the fishing rod may have disappeared though.

  • @musicmee The thing is I dont wanna be where I am when I disconnect I wanna respawn at an island with my stuff. If Im in an active fight with a person then I understand because that wouldnt be fair to them but I dont get why it just lets me keep sailing? Thats so dumb. At least make it easier to find people to play with so that I can have someone else on the ship.

  • @gracie3090 But surely if you randomly disconnect and you were sailing to try catch a ship or escape a ship... you'd want it to keep you moving? And not anchor so they can hammer you even more while you are gone?

  • @lem0n-curry I get that but they can sink my ship. I would appreciate it if skeletons or sea monsters didnt do that or if I get spawned with my stuff on an island with my boat. Its not fair that I lose everything. I have lost 120 fish😔

Because then you'll be able to disconnect on purpose and have a fast travel to a (probably) safer space.

Use the discord to find other people to play with.

  • And if all your supplies were just transported to safety with a new ship (or your old one) whats to stop that being abused? How would the game know people weren't using it to "keep their supplies"?

There would be no penalty to ship fighting?

  • @musicmee No Im saying just put me at an island not anchor me.

  • @lem0n-curry But the game can tell whether you disconnect on accident whether than do it on purpose though right? And the discord never has anyone actually joining things at least not for me.

  • @musicmee The game can tell when you disconnect rather than leave though I think.

    No it can't.

    Join someone else's crew ?

  • @gracie3090 Sadly it cannot differentiate... because you can force the game to think it has crashed by force quitting it - more so on PC but it is even possible by power cycling your console.

Sadly this could be abused. It sounds like a really nice idea... but just technically not possible.

It has been made better in recent updates as you never used to keep your supplies in your pockets.

  • Try being a meg hunter that gets disconnected during a meg spawn after hunting on a server for 3 hours, lol.

A large majority of people are in a situation where they can just bring the risk down. Risk includes everything, pve, pvp, game issues, internet issues, electricity issues, etc etc.

Never take extra/unnecessary risks in an online game if there is a specific objective. Get stuff sold or whatever the objective is, asap.

Something that is very common in threads like this is "hours" being a part of the frustration. A large majority of people (including you) can cut that stacking time down to where losses are minimal. There is very rarely a reason to stack anything in this game anymore. Consistency is always better than anything that comes from stacking.

Turn in more often ! Don't sail around with more than you care to lose.

  • @gracie3090 but that is what it does, everything i. Your pockets will be in your pockets if you rejoin within the 10 minute time limit upon disconnection.

This grace period does not exist when you lazy and/or sleepy board aka be afk for extende period of time

Alt+f4, quit from home on xbox, or just unplugging your router would give you the disconnect message with the option to return.

    Easily exploited.

  • @gracie3090

The thing is I dont wanna be where I am when I disconnect I wanna respawn at an island with my stuff.

So...you want a free teleport that you can abuse by hitting alt+F4?

If Im in an active fight with a person then I understand

How would the game determine an 'active fight'?
What if I run before they can shoot me, & I don't shoot back? Does that mean I can alt-F4 and teleport away?

but I dont get why it just lets me keep sailing?

Because it's an online game. Your ship still exists when you crash out, and you load back onto it.

    Thats so dumb.

No, that's perfectly fine. Your stuff is still there, and you still have to sail to an outpost.
    No free teleport.

But the game can tell whether you disconnect on accident whether than do it on purpose though right?
The game can tell when you disconnect rather than leave though I think.

    No it can't.
A game can't read intent. It's not sentient.
If you pull your ethernet cable, unplug your router, or force-close the game; The game & server have 0 way to tell if you did it on purpose or if it was a legit crash, internet loss, or power outage.
