Stop using military time and weird timezones

  • Look im gonna be honest RARE devs im AD military and i barely use military time. stop giving us wonky UTC military times during your updates and especially on events. i know that certain parts of the world use UTC but you're not being kind to those of us who are in the US please either give us a chart for different timezones or use PST and EST for NA. i had to have a legnthy discussion with my crew on how to convert military time and apply it to the windows of opportunity that were given to us on an event that was going on yesterday and today. Not to include the fact that a group of my other friends thought those windows were still open because they were completely confused on how military time works in general. please im begging you stop using military utc time.i know certain parts of the world use 24 hours but not the entire world just give us a char or at least EST and PST

  • All we used was military time when I was in the military..... UTC is universal time, it's the standard reference point for time in all countries, and as the 'common time' it makes most sense to use as SoT is played all across the world.

  • @mythicrug450 Now you know how the rest of the world feels with the games that only display US-times (wich are most of them).

UTC is by the way not a military time, but the world standard time. Every timezone is based on that timezone (so EST is defined as UTC-5, PST is defined as UTC-8). Every computer around the world also uses that timezone. Even if you set the time to your local time, your pc still calculates the time based of the UTC. That militaries around the world use it is simply because its the standard time and using that leads to the least errors in calculating the local time.

The reason Rare uses it, is because they are from the UK and it's their own timezone. Just like most other games are from the US and therefore uses US-timezones (wich are more difficult for people outside the US to calculate to their local time).

But your question baffles me a bit, you don't ask for the times in the game automaticly being translated into the local time of the players (wich i agree would be a nice QoL feature), but only for a chart to calculate it yourself. You can easily google a chart or even a translater online.

For a chart, i would suggest using this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/88/World_Time_Zones_Map.png (-1 means you have to deduct 1 hour from the UTC to make it your local standard time, etc.)

For a calculator, i would suggest using this: https://savvytime.com/converter/utc
UTC is already filled in, you just have to put your city in the search bar and it will also show you the local time and you can change one of the times and the other changes with it.

  • @mythicrug450
I mean, couldn't you Google a chart or conversion and just have that for yourself?

Whenever they post a time I just go to Google and type "10 am UTC to CST" or whatever and there is my answer. Takes like 0.5 seconds. Do you want them to post the time for every time zone across the world?

  • @danbeardluff said in Stop using military time and weird timezones:

All we used was military time when I was in the military.

Same here when I served in the military. I now work in a VA hospital and we use it all the time there too. It is pretty useful. Definitely not some kind of obscure method for communicating time. Same with UTC. Avoids a lot of misunderstandings.

  • 😆 not military and I understand it.

I worked in call centers. I had to do timezone conversions on the fly too.

Most of the jobs I've had use 24 hr time.

  • Also needs to be noted that Rare is headquartered in the UK, which is literally UTC/GMT (well, technically it's BST at the moment but it won't be for much longer), so it makes sense they would use their own time zone.

Could they mark out other important times across the world? Sure, and it would be nice if they did. But don't expect them to use American timezones exclusively. After all, the world is much larger than just America!

  • I just add UTC and major cities for other time zones to my clock app on iPhone, I assume other brands have the same feature. Saves me having to work them out.

  • UTC is constant and is not altered by Summer/Winter time changes. This is particularly handy as the US and UK, for example, change their clocks at different times. (UK clocks go back on the 30th of October and the US goes back on the 6th of November.)

So for announcements/events that are relevant in several different Timezones, it gives a universal reference point.

If you search for 'UTC time now' in your search engine of choice, it will give you the answer in seconds.

Other than that, you can use a site such as https://www.worldtimebuddy.com/ to check/compare multiple timezones at once.

This precisely. And you can add additional time zones in the Windows 10 clock as well if you don’t want to encumber your phone.

  • What time is 00:00 UTC in (insert your timezone)?

    Copy and paste my friends

  • The game updates channel in the community discord auto convert to local time for those that want to keep up to date that way lol

  • The military use standardised times to avoid confusion, so doesn't it make sense for Rare to adopt a standardised time to announce the updates?

  • I’ve been a software engineer for almost 20 years. Behind the scenes it’s best practice to store dates as UTC but display them to the user in the time zone they are reading it in.

If this is a technical problem I hope they are working toward a resolution. If it’s a product decision to display time in utc to everyone then I hope they will consult some UX experts. With all the sophisticated software of this game I’m always dumbfounded when I see the times displayed like this. It’s just not a good user experience.

  • We only operated on "military time" while I was in. And even to this day now that I'm out I still use the 24h clock. It's just better in my opinion. As to the UTC thing? Rare themselves is in the time zone at least partially (except when they're in BST which is UTC+1.) It only makes sense that they stick with it to keep things simple.

  • I don't get why Rare does not show us just the appropriate time zones to our machine!

Here is the code straight for Microsoft for C++ the language the game is made in...

    DWORD GetTimeZoneInformation(
    [out] LPTIME_ZONE_INFORMATION lpTimeZoneInformation
    );

  • What if we could purchase an alarm clock trinket or have an actual wall clock (and put them same place like a painting, where you could set your own time or it would show your computers time)?
That thing is a life saver when playing Civilization late at night and you don't want to go to sleep when birds start chirping.

Wall clocks were invented 1389 (way before piracy, could be a standard trinket with available variations like other ship trinkets)
Alarm clocks were invented 1787 - Which is towards the end of the golden age of piracy. So it could be something expensive as such technology would be state of art ^^

  • @mythicrug450 for some reason i have a feeling that like with the metric system most of the world is quite well versed in using “military time” otherwise known as just using the whole 24 hours of a day.

Except for the us/ the americas.

I know for a fact that is the usual way of telling time in europe

  • alt text

  • Just because you use AM and PM does not mean the rest of the world does. 24hr clock is very standard here and much simpler. What an arrogant post.

  • i can understand the confusion for me its just a 2 hour difference in summertime and one in wintertime

  • Have to admit, euro dates confuse me. Day/Month/Year ... I didn't even pay attention to the announcement from October 6.... because 06/10/22 is June 10th for me 😆

European measurements are based on logic ^^
    Seconds, Minutes,Hours,Days,Weeks,Months,Years.
Why would you have Month, Day,Year is beyond me ^^
Everytime I see it, I already picture this matrixesque movie beginning in green letters where they start a story with a date :D

My car (UK) used to confuse the hell out of me when driving home( still dont get it,but got used to it), I approach the exit on motorway, GPS says 0.5Miles, then all of a sudden it switches to 800 yards, I'm glad it doesn't go further into 1500 feet or something :D

So if you tell me something is 0.7 miles or 400 yards away I have no clue, where as 320 meters is rather easy to understand at least for me as an european.

  • @pithyrumble I can imagine that (also because for me US-dates are confusing). For me European dates also sound more logical, because they are from small to big, but that's just me.

For dates it always seems best to me to just write the month with letters to not get confused about wich date system is used. Because 6/10/22 or 10/6/22 can be confusing, but 6/oct/22 or oct/6/22 is always clear.

Do you say it's October 9th, or the 9th of October? If it's the former, 10/9/22 makes perfect sense.

  • @danbeardluff

I'm not trying to call anyone one out, just a reminder we all have different perceptions.

    Fahrenheit is best tho...

  • @danbeardluff 9th of October
    @pithyrumble Celcius is bestest :D

  • Call me an ignorant American in this case, but I agree with the OP on this issue. It appears easy enough to code it into the game, so why not just do it for those who want it? An option for it under settings would certainly be nice.

Military time is something that is used world wide to standardize time and make it easier for most people around the world to understand... As for weird time zones, theres more people not in the us, than there are in the us, or the americas at all for that matter, you could say the same argument for any time zone, that they are being unfair to those in asia, or australia, but it takes just seconds to pull up a time zone converter so that argument is just null and void.

As a us citizen, i openly realize that the rest of the world wont cater to us, and will use what their own standard is, much like how the us uses our own standard for time.

I like the euro date, it goes from shortest period of time, to longest, when writing dates here in america im always getting it mixed up cause having day first logically makes sense in my head.
