Saying Goodbye to The Arena

  • @danger-days-11 and? in live service games content comes and goes. The person I responded too has a founders badge. I have 0 sympathy for that situation. For new players say thoae who have joined us in the last 6 months, if they havnt done arena they didnt miss much.

Also in regards to your other comment, an overachiever style reward could have been nifty if they were reducing the requirements for the achievements. They are making them hidden from those who haven't finished them, keeping their difficulty the same.

The new legendary weapons look... way too same-y. From a black purple to a metallic dark green... It's not going to distinguish very much. I'd flip the silver and gold, but that's just me.
I suppose if the new legendary weapons are tied to a hard commendation, it's not a big deal. (My commendation idea is a different weapon for every legendary meg kill commendation except the Ghost)]

I feel like all meg kills is a bit much for these weapons mainly because one of the goals with making a new set is so they are more accessible to all PLs. I believe the stronghold loot commendations would be more fitting, for example, selling 100 Stronghold Chests to the Gold hoarder as a pirate legend will unlock 1 of the 4 weapons, and with bonedust, skulls, etc. On a different note, the old LSD weapons fit the PL color scheme better than the actual PL weapons that are on the way. Personally I would rather get the new color scheme for completing LSD before March 10th and the old LSD weapons remain part of the actual PL set.

I don't think that they should be attached to PvE content, and that they should add a new PvP focused comendation

  • After the arena close, The guns will be meme because the pirate legends will have the same weapons but in different color.

  • @jojo-buddy-v2
I get what you mean but just because they were previously linked to a pvp commendation doesn't mean they have to(Take the scorched forsaken ashes set for an example). Plus I wouldn't want to overwork Rare devs by giving them a whole new commendation to add. (They can't handle it)

  • @d3adst1ck said in Saying Goodbye to The Arena:

If anyone thought they weren't going to just add a recolor they were fooling themselves. People will still complain about the original set being 'exclusive' once Arena is gone. The same complaints popped up about that Season reward sword that looked similar to the LSD cutlass, but no one cares about that one anymore either and everyone still wants the original Legendary set.

    Nothing has been devalued.

How anyone expected anything else is absolutely beyond me..

Plenty missed out on bonecrusher and everything too, but were happy when they finally managed to get their hands on some form of recolour, after plenty of us did the original work to get them.

    Exact same set. Recolour.

    Outrage now though.

Anyone expecting anything more than a recolour was being delusional.

  • I can't believe I ever supported this.

  • I think you should change the look/design of the weapons that are going to replace the official legendary ones. Please, you are already killing the arena, do something that really favors those who were part of it.

  • As much as I agree with not diminishing the work players have put into the arena to complete the agreements. I do not agree with the decision to simply just retire those achievements.

They could easily be transferred to something else in Adventure mode that takes an equal amount of effort and time to accomplish, if not more. Hell, even if they took a hundred hours longer to complete than Arena did that'd still be better than locking players out of them entirely.

FYI I will have Arena completed before the closure, so the discontinued achievements won't be affecting me personally. But I'm absolutely gutted for the rest of the Sea of Thieves and achievement hunting community, new players in particular, that won't have ample time to get these done with such short notice. And I ask that Rare rethinks their decision.

  • What about the victorious sea dogs ship set? I was working up to it but didn't get there. Will it be available to purchase from the store?

  • I'm really not happy with the way you guys are handeling the achievements by making them unobtainable. I would like it alot more if you could for example change the 100 win achievement to sink 500/1000 player ships in adventure mode

  • @mr21cool Everything can be abused by alliances. They shouldn't be considered on matters such as this because almost anything the Devs do will be abused.

  • :DDDDDDDD
The rarest PvP reward will be available to everyone :DDDDDDD
I assumed that it would be so.

I won't even explain how difficult it was for me to make these 240 wins on arena in solo.

Why do I keep playing this.

@tntiseverywere you had years. choosing to not play arena was your choice. If you can not finish in the 6 weeks they gave you, thats not their fault.

It's entirely Rare's fault. It takes over 200 hours to finish the Triumphant Sea Dog commendation. 130 to 150 hours to reach Rank 50, then a bare minimum 200 games (67 hours) to finish Sea Dog Sailor. Then a couple hundred weapon kills to finish up after that depending what role you played on your crew. Absolute bare minimum 210 hours, and much more likely to be around 250 because lobbies are sweatier than ever.

It's technically possible to do it from zero in 6 weeks if you're unemployed and living with your parents, I guess.

Personally, I've been playing Arena steadily since I picked up the game last year. I hit Rank 50 in October and I was literally 45/100 Sea Dog Captain, counting down the days until I finished. Their announcement was a gut punch because playing 1 to 2 days per week I was on track to finish in late March or early April.

I had to double my play time to make sure I didn't end up screwed over and cheated out of hundreds of hours and months of anticipation, and low and behold, the first two weekends after they made the announcement, the servers were down for 8+ hours on the only day I can actually commit to longer sessions.

Just as a comparison, I was able to average 6.5 games on the weeknights I was able to play over the last week, and 24 games on this Sunday.

My main arena partner already gave up on getting most of his rewards because he only joined me around September and was rank 43 when the announcement went out. They simply didn't give an even slightly fair amount of notice for the largest and longest to unlock commendations in the game.

It's crazy to me that I was 75% of the way done according to the little numbers at the top of the Sea Dog tab, and I'm barely going to be able to finish it. What about all the people who are at 70% or 66% or even 40%? That's still 100+ hours of effort stolen from them.

Anyone that was unlucky enough to join at the wrong time after the game was added to Steam and got interested in arena was essentially cheated out of months of effort already put in if they happen to work for a living and can't play 20+ hours a week, or if Sunday happens to be your main day to play.

I understand that it takes them extra dev time to bug-fix arena with each new content patch, but they need to suck it up and extend the closing so people have a fair chance to finish what they started. This isn't some event achievement that takes a couple weekends to grind out. It's hundreds of hours, literally months of effort at a regular pace of play.

The closing of arena could have been a fun event with the usual Sea Dog spirit of fun contests, but instead it's oppressive and toxic as there's this ever-present threat that the more time you invest now, the more you're going to lose with one more ill-timed server outage, or a family emergency or what ever may happen.

i think you misunderstood my post, and yeah i played arena,I achieved the have the legendary weapons and every commendation in arena there is to get . My worries are not that the game will die, but I am just worried about the toxicity in arena which will be present in adventure mode more or less, because in my arena grind i faced a lot of it. And with a lot of new players in SoT i just hope that they don't face with these players and start to loose fun.

    I misunderstood? You said:

" And with the closing of Arena, all the toxic tdmers who used to play arena and spawnkill all the new pirates to the game (trust me there are a lot) will get thrown into adventure, which will even get more new players to quit the game. And with millions of new players in the last 2 years this would slowly bring the game to dying in my opinon. "

I played a couple hours yesterday and not one ship in sight, not a one. Did a fort and went uninterrupted and this happens alot when playing adventure one reason why I could never get into PvP much there its not fast pace enough for me I need fast pace PvP which is why when I want to PvP I play pure PvP games /modes. I stand by what I said, many arena players are already playing adventure and those who are sole arena will be in for a surprise when they try to PvP arena style in adventure. I do not think this will lead to the as you said in your post " slowly bring the game to dying".

  • @Meroviel @musicmee In adventure will the Sea Dog tavern have its doors opened? To allow those that did experience Arena and made memories in the tavern to once again feel as though they are in said Sea Dog Tavern? You know just as a thanks to the community I think it would be a nice nod to those that designed the tavern and allows players in adventure to explore the inner of such a building.

  • It's very confusing to me when people say "they didn't give us enough time!" The game mode came out what, years ago? And for people who just picked up Sea of Thieves and the Arena game mode, what's a "fair" amount of time? Do they have to cater to the lowest common denominator of player?

Dev team: "Ok, we're closing the Arena. Frank joined yesterday and says he only gets to play 2 hours per week. So we keep the Arena open for 6 years so it's fair to Frank to get all the stuff, right?" "YEAH!!!"

Mental, just mental. Servers are an issue, the team wants to focus on stuff that people ACTUALLY play, like... I get it's an unfortunate circumstance, but man, the pure entitlement of people to be like "No, devs, I know there's millions of players but you NEED to cater to ME right NOW!" is just appalling. They have the data, the numbers, the stats, everything. They know better than anyone what is worth it to them as a company and to the majority of players to focus on.

  • @maadureiraa it could be better then remake the weapons and keep the actual legendary weapons

  • Bad choice Rare!!! as if your unwilling to change the Xbox Achievements for Arena due to less than 1%s putting in the hard work then you shouldn't retire it & let people have a choice.

So much for 2022 being Sea of Thieves best year with a screwed up community day & now penalising current & new players who may want to 100% the game

You pretend like it's a hard problem to figure out, but they do it just fine with Seasons and timed events like Champions of Souls and Festival of Fishing. They know how much the average player plays each week, and it's not 33+ hours.

They could easily look up existing TSD's and find the average number of days between them unlocking Sailor of Silvered Waters rank 1 (5 games played) and unlocking Triumphant Sea Dog, then base the time on 75% to 80% of that. Essentially say, if you've already invested 20+ hours we'll give a reasonable amount of time to wrap up or at least make an informed choice not to go 100+ in on it.

I also guarantee that's going to be a bi-modal distribution with streamers and unemployed college kids doing it in like 1.5 months (played 30+ hours a week), and... everybody else, clocking in around 5-6 months. 3-4 months is my estimate.

Really, they should have just said End of next season, instead of start of the one coming up.

Add more Letters of Commendation for Sea Dogs. Seriously, it's not hard.
The dang things never worked properly on updates/resets anyway.

100% this. 10,000 dabloons and nothing to spend it on.

  • Discontinuing achievement is such a bad call!
With the initial notice they did not give us any info on the decision of what they would do with the achievements and took half of the closure time to finally decide.. they should extend the shutdown or give us double XP til closure.. offer more letter of Sea Dogs commendations.. this was so poorly planned.
This also sucks for any new person discovering this game not being able to complete it.

How about actually play the game to progess? I don't see how giving everyone everything is a viable solution.

  • @mr21cool Everything in this game is abused by alliances. Honestly the worst part of the pirate game was allowing alliances and giving a bonus for them. Literally people are doing alliance arena servers where they take turns on who wins. They don't even just play the mode. Its crazy. All the PVP has been slowly sucked out so that when people actually have to fight for their loot they cry because the other people are better. But those people are better because they fight for loot, don't spend their time in alliances with zero threats.

It would take a lot of dabloons to get to 50 lol which takes time to obtain. I have 900+ hrs in the game and 98% of it was in Adventure mode.

And? Its still not their fault. If you had wanted it, you would have finished it awhile ago. Even if you had done 5 wins a week since getting legend you would have been done around the time of the announcement. Thats maybe 1 night a week unless your win % is bad.

Im sorry that you felt rushed, but once again SoT is proving that FOMO works.

  • Dang I love the look of the weapons but I am heavily concerned on HOW to get them, especially since they're reskins of the original Legendary weapons.
My hope is that getting these weapons are quite difficult to do and hopefully PVP oriented (and not PVE), that way it encourages people who mostly do pve (like me) to engage in PVP a bit more and gives in the work for everyone, and less of a dishonour to those who grinded it out in Arena.

Also @TheKratex7201 the image you posted doesn't appear at all so you may want to fix that.

  • This is extremely laughable from an Xbox first party game. If you remove a certain gamemode, then it’s your job to also change the achievements tied to it and not make them unobtainable.

Change them to “destroy 100 ships as Pirate Legend” or “play for X hours”, etc.

Did you guys spend at least more than 5 minutes thinking on other solutions ? You guys have clearly changed achievements in the past so I don’t see why you can’t do the same now.

  • @maximusarael020 We both know they didn't, because if they were giving roughly 80% of the time needed to finish TSD that would mean the average TSD plays 33 hours per week. Come on dude.

  • I'm so gutted right now. I bought the game full price on release day and it was broken AF, so me and my team decided to wait until it was fixed. By that time, my team had lost interest, so I had to put SoT on the backburner. Now I had finally found a new, reliable team to start it and play regularly on weekends to grind for all achievements, but I guess rare has other plans for me. The only thing that I take comfort in, as someone who likes to get 100% of the achievements in games, is that I haven't started it. I don't have much time to play because I have responsibilities in life, so yeah, thank you so much for nothing Rare :/
