griefing players and toxicity is what keeps me away from buying this game, and here's why.

  • Sooo I've been eyeing this game ever since it came out, I like the idea of Pirates, and I like the idea of driving a huge boat and do piracy stuff.
However, seeing the youtube videos, seeing the Sea of thieves community, it contains a lot of toxicity and supports griefing, and i'll try and explain what I mean.

Griefing players means in MY opinion, and usually does when it comes to every game where experienced players that has everything, goes out after a noob player that has NOTHING on them, and steals their loot, kills them, etc, it's not good sportmanship for the game, especially when you want to atleast experience the game, instead of just having players coming after you, I've dealt with a lot of griefing players during my time in GTA and Red Dead, and this game is no excuse, this game HAS griefing players, and more than you would like to imagine.
This game is GTA 5 online during it's launch, and will forever sadly be so for another 4-5 years unless the developers shapes up.

The toxicity is what drives me away from this game too, mainly when I look at youtube moments, the only thing I CAN see is experienced players that has everything acting like they are 'hollier than thou' attitude cause they recently sunk a huge ship and got a lot of loot, and an angry opponent, the idea of PVP is not so you can feel good about yourself and that you can make someone angry, the meaning behind it is that you fight the player fair and square, and you sometimes win, and sometimes lose, but the toxicity in this community makes it unbearable, I've seen videos where they are like "oh they have salty tears cause I sank their ship." or "oh they mad cause I took all their loot." Yeah, exactly, they are going to be sad or mad, its a human reaction when stuff feels unfair or not in their control, stop boasting about it, it literally does nothing for you, or for the player that you recently have defeated.

PvE needs to added, I know, I know, I KNOW, this has been on everyones lips, its been discussed multiple times, but it truly does need to be added, the only reason why players are complaining is because most of them are PVP and are so scared that there'll be no other players left, well guess what, THERE WILL BE, GTA 5 has a passive mode, and it STILL has players in it, Red Dead Redemption has a passive mode, and it STILL has players in it. (And dont worry about PVP players, they will STILL be there for you to defeat, let the griefers and the PVP players play with themselves, you'll be fine.)
Every online game mode, has some type of a passive mode, and this is what needs to be added to this game until I fully commit my attention to it.

Scuttle ship needs to be removed, I'm sorry but this is one of the most stupidest anti griefing tool ive ever seen in a game, how is this suppose to prevent any griefing when you lose ur ship, ur loot, and ur life and you let the griefiers and pvp players win anyways? I don't see the point of losing when you've grinded really hard for the stuff you've worked for.

    Add in PvE Pirates.
I dunno if someone HAS suggested this, but this SHOULD be added too for the PvE players (and also PVP) let them be a bit challenging aswell, it'll be fun, I promise it'll be fun.
PvE pirates should drive around in sloops, galleons, and be at different levels, tough ones, (for more reward.) or easy ones (for less rewards of course.)

Anyways, I know I havent tried the game out, and it could be completely fun for me, but the community, and the youtube videos of the sea of thieves community (you can just search sea of thieves, and it'll come up) just makes this game heavily unattractive, take in consideration of the suggestions I've put in if you want the game to thrive, otherwise you'll have a GTA 5 mess on your hand, developers.

No to PvE. Experienced players and noobs both have the same weapons so just get good.

Oh and let's not forget, it's a pirate game so i will sink you and steal all your loot no matter if you're a noob or not.

  • @travis354 Nice troll bait dude, did you come up with the "get good" insult all by yourself?

  • The game is PVPVE. There is always a risk of PVP when doing PVE and always a risk of PVE when doing PVP. The only good point that i can agree with is that YES, when someone gets sunk or killed, they're going to be upset or angry, they have a right to that, but on the topic of good sportsmanship, that extends to NOT letting your emotions control you and lashing out. This is a video game. Say your GG's and move on.

A passive mode would not work for this game. People are going to find ways to grief you, perhaps even more. Blocking you from handing in treasure, messing around on your ship, blocking your path, etc. GTA's passive mode is also rather limited, nothing like what people want from a passive mode in this game, which as i understand is free reign to do what they want. It's a roundabout way of saying PVE servers, which is asked for every other day, and will not be happening.

PVE becomes incredibly boring when done over and over, it's the thrill of PVP that keeps it exciting and fresh. If i could grind world events and quests without having to strategize over other ships, whether i want a fight or not, this game would lose it's spirit.

Everyone exaggerates and inflates this games community as being a toxic cesspool, when in actuality a lot of pirates youll meet on the sea's are chill, even those wanting to PVP. I've only met a handful of toxic players, reported them and moved on with my life. I get it, it's tough, and this games learning curve is steep, but this game is in a clever place where if you lose loot, you don't actually lose anything. You GAIN. It gives you a reason to keep playing, a reason to get better. If you're grinding commendations or saving up for a cosmetic, and you get a setback, that's all the more reason to come back and try again tomorrow. And if you had fun doing it, you don't lose anything then either!

The game is thriving 100% fine without any of these suggestions. 20 million+ total players, 4.8 million ACTIVE players in July. The game is completely fine, and continues to be a passion project for the dev's. The game may not be for you, and that's completely fair, but coming on to the forums demanding the same tired arguments and suggestions when you don't even own the game is unfair to the dev's, and those that love the game for what it is.
It has its problems and drawbacks, everyone has their gripes and opinions, and thats valid, but this is a game and world the dev's want to create, and have put time and love into, and that needs to be considered and respected.

  • Ahoy!

The team have recently given their thoughts on the topic of PvPvE and discussed it in our latest Podcast.

There is also a thread for Custom servers here.

Sea of Thieves will always be a shared world adventure game, with elements of both PvP and PvE but Joe did speak about Custom Servers about a year ago. These servers will not offer Gold or progression IF they become available to the public. Private Servers are still being tested with our Partners.

    Dropping anchor on this now.

  • Going to add some more to this... if you haven't tried the game yet, and are basing this on what you have seen on social media or word of mouth... there's no better time to hop in and try the game.

There are also many deals in terms of GamePass for $1 so you can hop in and check out Season 4 yourself and test the game for yourself!
