I'll most likely get destroyed for saying this

  • But i don't care at this point because im losing my mind trying to find a way to get good at pirate to pirate combat. The truth, though, is that this aspect of the game is just the most infuriating and badly designed mess i've ever seen - and the saddest thing is it wasn't this bad at launch - but rare ruined it with their "balancing changes".

There is literally no point in becoming a skilled PvP player (I'm of course not talking about ship to ship combat, which i really think works superbly) because it all feels like rolling a dice which makes none of it matter in the end. The unavoidable damage left and right, the extremely slow animations and delays coupled with very fast moving and nimble characters, the huge hitboxes, it makes no sense whatsoever, what the **** were they thinking and why in the world did they leave it like this???? It's like they did everything in their power to take as much control away from the player as possible.

As a competetive gamer who has played this game since launch i should be able to, with confidence, take down new players without breaking a sweat (because that's how high skill roof competetive games should be designed) - but that's now how it feels in SoT, and because of the randomness and lack of control i have no idea if im gonna be able to beat them even if they're just desperately swinging their swords around because they don't know what else to do.

All they have done is add more and more content when parts of the core of the game is still a huge dumpster fire. Come on, get it together and fix your game Rare.

So yeah, that's my little rant, hope you enjoy and happy bashing :)

  • I don't mind getting humbled by less experienced pirates it prevents combat complacency and keeps seeds planted in the thrill garden

I just don't generally find it very fun. Lots of inconsistencies in sword to sword and gun to gun combat that I just don't have a good time participating in whether I win or lose. I love ship to ship combat. It's a lot of fun. The whole nonstop boarder thing (while effective) is just a fun ruiner for me.

  • @wolfmanbush I don't mind losing and of course even as an experienced player you will make mistakes, and i always take it as an opportunity to learn. But when the game is designed in a way that you can't influence the outcome of a fight against a complete beginner enough to feel confident in winning, then i think something is very wrong.

  • The person that gets the least amount of hitreg usually wins nowadays because of how broken the entire combat system is. It's a complete mess right now.

I would love to see a revamped combat system implemented but whether Rare will ever do that is a question only they can answer.

  • I agree. As a newer player i mainly try to avoid most combat situations purely because im not confident in the mechanics. In other games i always rush straight into fights even if i know i cant win, because i know ill gain experience and gradually become better. However this is not the case in SoT due to how inconsistent and random it is. Although i do like the challenge of learning to aim with the eye of reach.

  • Dominating less “skilled” pirates. Makes you feel good?? Wow..

  • @burnbacon Well, yeah, that's what makes anyone feel like a good player. It's literally the definition of being good at a game lol.

You're saying it like it's a bad thing but people have every right to enjoy being better at the game than others. In my case though, that's not really what i care about, i'm more focused on self improvement than feeling good about myself. What i mean is basically that i think the skill roof is too low and the game doesn't reward skill enough.

  • @skritsarn I've noticed on low enough ping, hitreg is a slight problem. And animations can be cancelled. It's what separates the good double gunners from the garbage ones.

  • My crew and I all completely suck at PvP. No, really. We've improved over the last three years of playing, but we're still pretty bad. Our best bet is always to stick with naval tactics, avoid boarders and play to our strengths. As long as we can keep the battle ship-to-ship, we're extremely likely to win in the end. But if we get boarded by halfway competent players...we're usually wrecked.

    Having said all that...

There's almost no chance a crew of new players can destroy us. Even if they have great PvP skills from other games, they likely have no concept of naval combat. It's happened so many times. A group of players thinks they're "all that" with their mad PvP skills and tries to gank us. Then they promptly wind up at the bottom of the sea because they have no clue how to manage a naval battle. They probably watched some streamers for a while and thought, "hey, let's go be pirates and sink everyone." Doesn't work like that. There's a lot more to Sea of Thieves than the admittedly basic combat system. There's strategy involved. A good battle at sea is chess, not checkers.

If I were to add anything to combat, it would be simple things. For instance, I'd love to see "crouch" and "roll" commands. Just these things alone would add a lot, I think. But I'd resist adding too much complexity. Part of the beauty of Sea of Thieves is its simplicity.

  • I feel the same exact way. I have around 1.3K hours on this game and I’d say about 1.1K are all pvp hours. I frequently TDM and 1v4 camp gallys in adventure when I server hop with my crew, and I have to say....the sword is absolutely busted! Sword lunges that miss you but still do damage due to the massive hit box, getting locked into a stun after jumping over a guys head but getting hit in the pinky toe, swords going through a block like a hot knife in butter. Double gunning (my main load out of choice) is worse. Shots don’t count on players, it genuinely feels like hit registration is getting worse every update. Just tonight, I hit a guy with a two tap (one sniper and one blunder) from 3 feet away and he doesn’t die. What’s the point in getting good at this game? Isn’t the whole premise of this game, everyone is equal except individual skill? Yeah right, 1.3K hours and you die to a 34 hour player due to a busted weapon and bad registration.

    Rant over.

  • Being someone who use to hate the term "its sea of thieves, not sea of friends" and used every trick in the book to avoid combat. I personally do agree with this. I got tired of loosing my loot and having to drop and run from every encounter, I started fighting and getting better. Not gonna say im anywhere near decent, but anyone can really see how bad the hits are sometimes. Theres points where I can say I know i shouldve died, or i know i shouldnt have died. Being a Day 1. I can also say that it also wasnt this bad

  • Personally don't care one way or another in any way about PVP. Though I'll do it if teammates want to and if I'm alone I don't care about the outcome. I might try my best. I might just let you have it. Depends on my mood. It's not something that matters to me.

That said, the sword combat is definitely really bad. It's just there. The control of it is just terrible.

  • @skritsarn

and the saddest thing is it wasn't this bad at launch - but rare ruined it with their "balancing changes".

At launch you could literally shoot 2 bullets from a sniper and pistol on the same frame, effectively one shotting somebody without them even hearing the bullet before they die. You could also hit the ground while sword dashing to prevent the stun you get from missing the sword lunge, effectively allowing you to become a walking Beyblade dashing around the boat.

Anyways, it wasn't this bad at launch is an interesting take to say that least.

  • @kaijoi It was better then now

  • I 10000000% agree, the game has become worse over time and the combat system had become so bad its all rng and no skill is needed to win
