DA sails

  • Well. Having now played with these sails, there should be a way to change the other sails as well. Maybe if once you bought the DA sails you could then earn ways to convert the others in the same form.

  • Counterpoint...it would be simpler/easier/fairer to remove the V cut and make the Dark Adventurer sails more in line with the rest?

Never thought of this and I kind of agree with it... While 8M may not be a large sum to some of us old salts, it is a measurable (1) advantage which makes it different from every other item in the game.

    (1) Deliberately said measurable and not small/large. 1/2bh. Measurable. Individual opinions of the advantage size may vary.

  • @lordqulex
As someone who has the sails I think I'm in the same boat of removing the cut. Would be nice to not make people feel forced to use them to gain every ounce of advantage they can. Sadly for the exact reason of how hard 8 million can be to get/how long these sails have been out for people to have time to become attached to them, I would be surprised if they actually did this.

  • Tell me a you're a bad sailor without telling me you're a bad sailor sails?

    Remove the cut. 😈

  • @Foambreaker Nope, some just see an advantage with the cut. (there is a marginal advantage...IF you are full sailing ALL the time)

Though to be fair, if you are full sail during a PvP encounter, you are probably disadvantaging yourself anyway.

Much easier to just curl the sail a bit or walk a few steps and look under the sails. 🤷‍♂️

EDIT: 🤔 is 'disadvantaging' a real word? if not I am using it anyway because I like it! 😂

  • @triheadedmonkey It's 2023, anything the AI allows is a real word. I had to report the AI for not allowing Jelly fish when spelled correctly :)

  • Yea I've got the sails. Honestly I'd be ok if they removed the cut. It's not pay to win but it's the closest to "play to win," i.e. pirates who have been around longer have an advantage.

  • The only "bad" thing about the sails is they are one of the things people get stuck on as a reason they lost fights and it sticks with them as an excuse which can stunt their improvement in combat.

That overall makes it a pretty misguided basis for change imo

and on the side of significance that's not really a thing anymore either with the massive cheesing in this game, they literally just gatekeep against people (casuals) that play the game organically. Their significance was quickly gone as alliance servers grew and grew in popularity around that time and as gold boost weekends just became alliance server weekends for people that diss alliance servers the other days of the week lol

I would just throw out some easy to get similar shapes in the near future so people can chill with the advantage angle.

  • DA sails is like having an expensive , large screen TV, i would like to see this cut being added to other sails in future for similar pricing, or allow us more customization options for captained ships. Ideally owners of DA have it unlocked already, others would need 8m to enjoy the view and join the club.

I agree. Who's bright idea was it anyway to give veteran players a bigger advantage?

  • I would go in another direction make all sails customable - teared, vcuted, pathed, full..

    Wait.
Nah it stupid idea couse it would make all sailes on seas vcuted and that would look ultradumb.

For pure aesthetic and immersion reasons down with v-cut!

  • I don't have the sails but in all the videos and Twitch sessions I've watched, I've never seen anyone win a fight because they had these sails. On a side note, I have only ever seen these sails on sloops.

  • @rikjaxx It's not a battle outcome changing advantage, but if you don't care about stereotypes or the design, definitely get them, they are awesome for sailing.

Michael Jordan could dunk in flip flops, but Air Jordan 1 would definitely be his preference. You could sit on a chair, but you would prefer a couch.

It's just a tiny extra bit, imo it's more of an advantage PVE (Player vs Environment) and not a PVP advantage.

    DA sails are a luxury.

Some people take words too literally imo when talking about DA sails.

  • I actually like the Dark Adventurers set as a whole. But I am afraid people would just judge me as a tryhard and would be slightly more probable to come and fight my ship because of that.
I would vote for either remove the V-cut on those sails, or introduce new sets with sails featuring that cut.

  • @dragotech123 I use them exclusively for several months now and I don't feel any change tbh. Perhaps less people attack me, but that could be due to updates as well.

But also think about it from another perspective. If you are fighting someone with lets say some new player ship cosmetics and you are loosing, you would feel, man my performance today sucks, if you fight against someone with really rare cosmetics or as you describe - try hard - you might just admit that your fate is sealed.

  • I want the cut gone so the group claiming the cut doesn't give them an advantage can make up reasons why they're upset the cut is gone

  • @triheadedmonkey in that case remove them from the game and refund everyones gold. Its not like they are cool looking sails. literally 90% of the people using them are only doing it so they can be lazy and not have to roll up the sails a tad.

  • I own all the DA stuff, but I'm in the camp of removing the V-Cut from the DA sails, and making the 8 million price tag the price for the V-Cut itself.
That way, you could apply the V-Cut to whatever sail you wanted to sail with that session.
Of course, I would expect those of us who already purchased the DA sails would get the V-Cut for free. But this way, there would be more variety to the sails that we fly and that we see on the seas.

I kind of like the idea of torn sails being battle damage when a mast get dropped that can be restored when you repair the ship...

  • @lordqulex thats kinda dope idea.

I thought they were kinda cool (v cut aside) because I like the black and silver color scheme. 😢

  • How about reducing speed just a bit as there is less sail to catch the wind 😎.

  • @triheadedmonkey absolutely not. People pay 8mil specifically for the cut, if u remove it I want a refund

  • These sails are just like PL outfit.

When you eventually can unlock and afford them, they're cool.

Then you play with them and you realise they're ugly, not that advantageous, and that the whole community is laughing at you now.

Then you play with the sails you prefer. As one should.

I'd keep them just for that reason. To spot that pirate who's in that sweet spot between complete noob and noob 2.0 and is actually PROUD to show it.

  • @jolly-ol-yep So people laugh at other players that equip no curses, no glowing cosmetics to blend in the night more? ^^

Also who cares if they do :D most sweats don't equip any sails at all and on purpose play with the standard white sailor ones, that's cringy too. Literally depending on your point of view, you can make a claim everyone is cringy. ^^

  • @triheadedmonkey said in DA sails:

This would be the LAZIEST and CHEAPEST way of solving this issue.
    BUT AT THIS POINT!
    IF RARE CANNOT BE BOTHERED!
Then it is better than nothing.

    HOWEVER!
You must keep in mind that A LOT of ppl will be VERY upset with this cut-out being removed.
Because guess what, they paid 8.2 million for exactly that.
(Sure some maybe bought them for another reason but that is probably less than 5%)
So a refund would be in order HOWEVER² ...
a lot of ppl ALSO bought a lot of the other DA-Stuff BECAUSE they already bought the Sails ... yeah ... see where this is going?

But none of this TRULY matters.
What TRULY matters is that the DA-Sails actually make sailing more enjoyable on ... well ... every Ship.
But especially on the Brig and also on the Galleon, it would be a tremendous loss of QoL if the Cut-Out was to be removed.

So why not capitalize on it instead?
Why not introduce the ability to select sail-shapes just like OP said?
It wouldn't have to stop at a simple cut-out.
What's the downside? (Other than it being a bit of work for Rare)

  • I appreciate those saying "if they remove the cut I want a REFUND!!"

I just imagine Rare saying "Oh, you want your fake money back? Ok...." and allowing a refund for those who want it. Because in reality it doesn't affect Rare at all. It's not real money.

  • What about... you know... balancing it ?

Some say they give an advantage in-game (They certainly do, and it's against the "same tools" rule but hey, not the first time Rare has contradicted itself and probably not the last (ELO system that rewards streaks, I'm looking at you)

Let's just put a minor inconvenience to them.

    Less cloth? Less speed.

That would make it functionally identical to just rolling your sails up all the time

Which is an ancestral technique already used by those pirates who don't sail the DA sails.

  • @triheadedmonkey My matey be spittin' facts! If you HAVE to use DA sails to get an advantage, you probably aren't the best sailor. Seasoned pirates were maneuvering/utilizing regular sails long before DA, and they still dumpster other crews with ease. You don't need DA to be good.
