New Mermaid System (Probably my best idea yet)

  • Ive got an idea for a really great twist to the current mermaid system.
Just last night i had a sloop full of loot and sailed past galleons grave and a mermaid of another crew was waving at me. A solo player was lying in wait to ambush me but their mermaid betrayed them. Although that did help me keep my loot as i just sailed to the next outpost, i do appreciate the emergent gameplay ambushes bring especially if i manage to defend my loot so I wish to put an end to this current system.

From now on mermaids must be summoned.
To do this you must play a sea shanty whilst in the water and ample distance away from your ship.

The mermaid will hear the call and appear to you.
However there is a chance something more sinister will happen.

    (Evil Mermaids)

Lore speaks of evil red eyed mermaids.
What if they disguise themselves as regular mermaids?

There is a very low chance that 2 mermaids will appear when you play your shanty. One will be an imposter.

If you choose the wrong mermaid it will (just as lore says) wrap you in silk and drag you to the depths with its brethren.
You then spawn on the ferry of the damned and have a new colour you can take from the flame of fate.
If anyone remembers Banjo Kazooie, it will kinda be like those Jinjo creatures, but the evil ones. Look identical but you dont know til its too late.

Also it would be nice following this to introduce mermaids into the actual seas.

Evil ones with their cool looking tridents and red eyes could spawn like sharks and maybe even guard mermaid statues. Passive friendly ones could simply serve as friendly fauna kinda like dolphins.

I think this would be a cool feature.
It adds a little risk to using mermaids too which when they are disguised, are totally undistinguishable from friendly ones. Means that although when you do fall overboard, you can make it back but you will sigh heavily as you could die.

No more using mermaids as a taxi service.
Well, not unless you wanna roll a 50/50 dice.

  • @daringclarky this is already someone elses "best idea", came up often since launch...and it's not a good idea, there needs to be an indicator for other pirates hiding at outposts for example...

  • -New players would have absolutely no idea how to get back to their ships
-You can move your mermaid by swimming out to the other side of the island
-RNG evil merfolk killing you would be completely unfair in battle scenarios, as it prolongs your stay away from the ship behind an extra loading screen and wait time on the Ferry itself
-There needs to be a system to see ambushes so that players who don't trust their combat skills have a chance to avoid them
-If two spawn you can simply swim away and have only one spawn
-Fully transformed merfolk cannot breath air, limiting their surfacing ability, and look completely different to the half transformed friendly ones
-Merfolk statues are formed by merfolk attempting to get on land, which results in them turning to stone, so they cannot be guarded by more

  • @daringclarky
Mermaids aren't your servants. You're lucky that the newly cursed ones try to save you at all.

  • I'm sorry but I can't see what's wrong with how it currently works.

I wholeheartedly agree with @UltmateRagnarok here. New players would have to learn a whole new non intuitive system, not to mention people who don't read patch notes will lose a ship or 3 to this because people are used to a certain system.

I'm not saying you can't change things but not this drasticly. Having a warning system is great. The mermaids don't work for you they don't work for the other team, they see a pirate in need and try to help him. They kind of don't get a hint and don't get that you want to sneak so: "Hey sir want a lift?!"

Why does there need to be an indicator exactly?
Please dont say because it makes it easier to avoid ambushes because good strategy and skills can thwart any ambush.

In response to people saying New Players need this.

Im sorry but sounds like a casual cop out.
Tutorials can always cover the basics and youtube videos and 5e community in general can help players.

New players rarely go solo, so they’ll learn until they’re ready.

To me it sounds that you just dont like the added possibility for an ambush at an outpost.

In all fairness they will still be very rare as who can be bothered to sit and wait for an hour for 1 shot to take some loot?

Regarding the mermaids attacking, they will only show up rarely kinda like a shark.

Anyways guys i get you may not like this for your play style but its not all about your playstyle.
If you rebutt an idea at least have a logical and fair reason for not having it other than “dont want i” or “oh new players will need to know how to get back to their ship”....Duke will tell them to play a shanty. If they dont read it then sure they will struggle but anybody who skips the tutorial likely is just along for the ride.

I belive that is the worst idea I've ever seen here, and that's saying something.

  • @daringclarky this game isn't any kind of stealth game, that's why...
You can ALWAYS see, if there is an enemy nearby, a ship or a mermaid, you just need to watch arround you...
If you want to camp outposts, use a rowboat, then there is no mermaid...the tools are there so you can ambush, use them and don't change game mechanics

Ohhh...that must be some new genre then...because I don't know any stealth game, where you can't crouch...what's some kind of necessary...

  • @schwammlgott well you know sea of thieves so you should know 1.... Sandbox game with the possiblity to steal stuff without getting spotted?

  • @daringclarky
I guess this should be posted again:

  • This is the worst best idea I've ever read in this forum. Meremaids are their own power, they are not under the command of a player. They come and go as they please. You can also not move them, not hide them.

This game is also not a stealth game. You can use mechanics to stay as unnoticed as possible, like sleeping in a bush, which is a passive mechanics. But there are no active mechanics that really consciously and actively support sneaking up, you can't crawl, you can't bend down, the player's name shines above the character. And it should stay that way, it's essential in this game that you can recognize dangers.

So...the tools are there to do so, use them

  • @schwammlgott first you tell me there are no "tools" for sneak plays (cant crouch etc) and now you tell me i should use the "tools"... decide what you wanna tell me please

  • @lysergicaa I said this isn't a stealth game, but you are able to be sneaky, that's a difference imo...

  • @schwammlgott what is your definition of a stealth game?

  • @lysergicaa a game where you are the majority of the time hiding and without making noise, where you have to do it that way to be successful....kind of...

But I stop this conversation now, I'm getting sick of trying to explain someone what a stealth game is and how SoT isn't one

  • @schwammlgott get over yourself

  • @lysergicaa 🤦🏻‍♂️

  • Although I hate my mermaid giving me away sometimes, I had a great time causing paranoia within a duo sloop. They were doing a Reaper’s Run and I was hiding at the fort they needed to be at. One literally stood on the boat for 10 minutes waiting to see if I came up cuz my mermaid was in sight, flintlock ready. Was tempted to use the fort cannons on him.

It’s easy to move a mermaid too, OR easy to move to a spot where you’re pretty far from the mermaid but it doesn’t move so you aren’t found (at least not right away).

Besides. Tests your skills to see if you know how to counter the mermaid giving you away.

  • The fact mermaids always appear shows they’re actively tracking us.
    Why?

    it doesnt make sense.

However calling for aid will alert them to us.
    Makes sense.

Regardless if you like my idea or not lets not act like spoilt children.
Feel free to say you disagree with my idea but lets keep it constructive.

Whats the point in having a forum to discuss things if people are just being toxic with each other.

  • My brother that dont even play the game, Saw the mermaid, an also said it was stupid how it sometime appear near you, an far away.

Just a simple "mermaid whistle" that you can use when the ship is far enough away.
When used, the mermaid appear, or just take you right away.

  • @greencamillion1

    Yeah. i like that idea.
Mermaids just appear when they arent always needed and that gives away our presence.

If i was actually a pirate in the sea of thieves and planning to ambush a crew, i’d cut the throat of this creature to keep my presence hidden.

  • Search the forums for summoning a mermaid and you will see why this isn't already built in, why this should never be built in, and why it most likely won't be built in.

  • Nope nopey nope nope nope mermaids need to stay the same.
