enhance the sandbox

  • we need more sandbox mechanics that lead to playerinteractions as well as competetive as cooperative.
Someone who does not play the game recently said to me: SoT has no Progression when we talked about another game and i said i dont play games what are focussed on progression.

imho RARE should stop caring about more progression stuff, what is optional in the Sea of Thieves, but concentrate on new sandbox gameplay mechanics, like they recently did.

Stop asking for progression and commendation stuff and let RARE know, we the players who like the original idea and concept of the game dont care that much about become a Piratelagend or Athena Rank X.
We want things like the roaming Skeleton Ships, different Megs and Karen give us loot.
I think the Big Bertha in a Fort is a good way to give incentive to do a Fort, if this Powder KEg can be used in different ways.
Its worth a lot, you can sell it. Its powerfull, youcan use it for PvP or PvE against Skaleons and i imagine something to do where its needed. Something you need to do a fort first to get a big bertha to be then able to open a gate for exmaple, like bust this rock and get into the cave behind to fight a Skeleton Lord or whatever.

What about a mechanic to call Shrouded Meg in the fog like we had in
Hungering Deep. You have to play a specific song (merricks song again) with 2 crews to call him, he's then more difficult to fight, stronger and also attacks harder so its difficult for 2 crews to beat him. It need at least one player to play the song, if it stops, he will disappear in the fog again and you need all playing to call him back.
Sounds difficult? Yes it should be challenging and an incentive for 2 crews to work together.

Make every ship having some special loot become a reaper flagged ship to encourage PVPirates to plunder them and make it more dangerous to sail with a fortress chest, skull or something like that.
I dont want it for the normal stuff, but for fortress or Skaleon special loot etc.

Please share your ideas about sandbox gameplay mechanics.

  • While I don't necessarily agree with all the specific ideas that you mentioned, I absolutely agree that Rare should focus much, much more on the sandboxing elements, since that's what makes this game both unique and amazing. They can keep adding whatever grindy progression/commendation chores they want and that's all fine and good, but eventually the people that are attracted by that will complete it all and then move to a different grindy progression game. Those things don't make SoT special. If they continue to focus making this game a brilliant open world sandbox, the people who are attracted by that will play it for as long as Rare supports the game. At least I will. Hell, I get on the game just to sail aimlessly around the world sometimes because the core mechanics and atmosphere are that good. Focus on that, instead of the endless repetitive tasks that every other game on the planet focus' on

The pillars of 'the pirate life' are freedom, adventure, and conflict; doing whatever you want, whenever you want, however you want, to whoever you want, for any reason you want, and struggling through the consequences thereof. Commit to that and SoT will be one of the best open world sandboxes made to date

  • Two things which should not be added:
"It needs at least one player to play the song, if it stops, he will disappear in the fog again..." That is pointless, as the shark wouldn't even be able to hear the song over the battle anyways, and it would keep attacking (the ones like that are incredibly bloodthirsty and don't stop fighting unless one side is defeated).

"Make every ship having some special loot become a reaper flagged ship..." That would cut out the population who play purely for PvE. They wouldn't be able to get some of their chests purely from random chance.

This were spontaneous ideas, nothing i really thought over.
The idea was to have at least one man remain playing the Song to add some difficulty. He need not die, he cannot help fighting or repairing. It would increase the atmosphere when one in the Background is still playing merricks song.

The pvp idea, well i think we already have something similar. When a Fort Cloud disappears, everybody knows somebody is clearing the room with loot. Not 100% correct as there are other ways, but most of the time it is exactly like that.
I for myself dont start pvp, or lets say we do it very less, but we also never refuse to fight, except we have tons of loot, then we try to sell the most worthy and then go to battle, if they have chased us.
Thing is, if i imagine i play a pure Pirate and want to plunder only.... it's maybe a little frustrating if you sink someone and he has no loot.
To me this is a viable and very interesting way to play the game and i just havent found likeminded people that want to play this way but at the same time are in no way toxic and would even be ok with giving loot back or do so some roleplay about that. Like give me your captains chest and we dont sink you and take all or something like that. Or you fought well, you can choose one item and keep it and we give you that rowboat.
Thing is, you never know if you sink someone if he is having nothing but 15 Bananas. That's bad somehow.
Ships with loot need to be recognizable.
Oh ok, if i think over it maybe should not this way, but maybe the other way around that you can see if a ship holds nothing and isnt worth to plunder, because they dont have anything to plunder.
Maybe this is also not the best solution.
Sure you can say you have to observate and pick the one you assume the biggest booty, but honestly i do not completely dislike the idea of an Arena, but i would like they would integrate the pvp more into the regular world and give us tools and mechanics to play with.
I also would like some faction based pvp.

  • @bugaboo-bill

Maybe a way to tell people you have nothing, and having a reaper's mark chest be very rare and not randomly found (from quests). As for the song, I don't know. I think the in-game music would work, but maybe switch the player to play that too?

  • @bugaboo-bill I really like the idea to summon the hungering one with Merrick’s shanty requiring at least a second crew member.

Still want a salt water crocodile for a land to water threat. A shoreline threat with a small aggro. Get to close, will charge on land and will outswim you in water.

I agree, this is harmful to the game and rather unnecessary. Some people have put forward the idea of a Reaper's Chest that causes a ship to appear on the map as though they were flying the Reaper's Mark as long as it's on board and I LOVE this idea, but it's not quite the same

@bugaboo-bill said in enhance the sandbox:

Ships with loot need to be recognizable.

They already are. My crew identifies them by chasing until we can get a boarder, either by sword lunging or cannon launching, and then the boarder runs around looking for treasure until they die. Spyglassing from the crow's nest is also a good way to tell sometimes. If there's none to be found, we just leave and move on

If nothing else using the loudspeaker and saying "Hey, if you show us you have no treasure, we'll leave you alone" might work

  • @ambiguousmonk

I never understood sinking a ship with no treasure, as even if you steal all of their resources you can leave the ship afloat. As for the Reaper's Chest, I think it should be the only treasure to give you a Reaper's Mark on the map. It also shouldn't be found on voyages (maybe level 50 ones though), unless it could be it's own voyage.

  • @ultmateragnarok I think it should just be a randomly discovered chest, much like the cursed chests. In fact, it should BE a cursed chest. Keep in mind that it only forces flying the flag if it's on a ship. It itself doesn't have a Reaper's Marker, so it could be hidden on an island, rowboat-ed somewhere if you really felt like it, or even swam somewhere if you're REALLY dedicated

I usually try not to sink treasureless ships either, (unless they're in the way of a fort or something or if they're stalking me) just raid them for supplies if we need them

  • there are a few things like the new powder keg i would like to be added, such as different variations of cannonballs that can be placed in cannons but not stored within barrels or stored within your inventory.

  • @AmbiguousMonk
It would have to be a cursed chest, or the usage Reaper's Mark wouldn't make any sense. I would think it to have it's own Reaper's Mark, which only activates on a ship (rowboats, most likely not). As for finding it, not during Legendary voyages and not during Gold Hoarder's voyages (excluding the level 50 voyage idea). Possibly it could be found in a stronghold vault.

As for sinking ships, at a stronghold you can just sail the ship away and then not worry about it (or notify them you will be selling, but they can ally or something similar). Sometimes you can just take the treasure and leave the ship alone, if they agree to it (that's what I would do, give it to them and continue on my way [I hate having to fight other ships, unless it's a duel or the like]).

  • @ultmateragnarok I agree with it having it's own Reaper's Mark, although I think having some type of visual on the ship to indicate it would be good too. I don't see what's wrong with making it spawn under the same conditions as any other cursed chest. It's a risk and reward thing, not a mandatory turn in. If someone is doing something they find important and doesn't want to take the risk, then they just leave the chest. You still get the voyage completion. You've just opted not to take the risk of transporting the chest

That's where we differ then lol I love fighting other ships. Boarding and sailing another ship away takes too much time, increasing the chance of another ship arriving. It's faster to just sink them and siphon supplies (if needed) while doing it. If a ship is tailing me to a fort or stalking a fort as we complete it, I will absolutely sink them to possibly avoid a find on top of the treasure/key. I'm actually not a fan of the alliance system as it is. I think it's actually brilliant, but I hate the gold sharing concept. I know a lot of people would complain, so it probably won't be done, but I'd much rather have the gold sharing aspect removed entirely. Alliance would then have to trust each other to split the loot fairly, which leads to actual interesting ship politics. I pretty much only alliance with ships to act as bodyguards for solo sloops or newbies, since that's actually fun

  • @ambiguousmonk

Something to indicate on the ship would be great, perhaps a red glow to any flag equipped (equipping the basic one automatically if none are). Maybe make it rare though, even for a cursed chest, as it would be very difficult to get back sometimes (although also sell for a lot).

I am fine with fighting other ships, I just prefer to ally with them and then leave (given that I am a solo galleon player sometimes people will underestimate me, but I can defeat a full crewed one if I really have to), allowing me to continue completing missions and commendations. I am fine with killing someone in the way of a stronghold, or if they follow me with intent to kill (if they want to sail as a fleet, that is fine). As for sailing away other ships, it is easy to raise the anchor of a sloop and any experienced crew will leave the anchor up, allowing you to simply drop sails and let it go. The gold sharing either should be 100 or 0, but the 50 is the best we will get (adding a second, stronger type of alliance would be better). Helping solos and new players is all good, especially the new players (even the most bloodthirsty of pirates will normally help out a new player).

  • @Bugaboo-Bill

I really like where this conversation is going and i must say i do agree with the main point raised in this Topic as many reply post here touch on many Pillars that make up my Rogue Wave Project as i feel the game strayed to far away from what made it special by putting to much enphisis on the PvE and not enough on the PvP and social interactionsit was founded on and left the world feling empty. SS update was a step forward in that direction as it focused on making the world more alive and interactive. But still most of the social aspect is still lacking if not absent and the need for more tools and special item will go along way in helping this by giving players more way to interact with both the world and eachother. This is what will make SOT a true gaming Masterpiece.

I agree, @BR0CRASTINAT0R You should definitly make a Topic on this if you haven't added this to a Topic already.

  • @enf0rcer I will champion it any time it’s relevant, until it’s placed in the game in some form or fashion.

  • @br0crastinat0r Good to here make the Topic and send the link to me thru a Reply on the Master list Tread so i can post it there.

  • Maybe a Reaper's chest worth a lot that is cursed and puts the reaper flag up on your ship. But only that cursed chest.

I love the idea of the different meg variants having different mechanics. Make one more susceptible to sword slashes and you have to stun her with a keg. Make each only spawn in certain biomes so they can be hunted. Make them different sizes and difficulties and make huge ones that are almost raid bosses that drop crazy loot. I want more rare spawns. Rare skeletons (maybe silver versions of the metal skellies) that drop trinkets or gems.

Maybe add a pickaxe to mine in caves on islands or veins that show up on the land. It's a tool like the shovel and not a weapon. You can put ore in a crate and sell it to the merchant alliance or smelt it down and sell the bars to the Gold Hoarders.

  • Great ideas guys.

I like the reaper chest idea.
I like the croc idea as a threat on the beach and shallow water.
I like the mining and fill a box of gems idea.

What about to make the reaper flag give you a turn in bonus of 5% maybe.
The greedy get more, but also are more in danger to get attacked?

    What about faction play.
    We have 4 regions.
    They could have regional Reputation.
Players then would be able to hoist a regional flag, like to say i sail for the wilds or for the Shores of plenty.
They get rep if they hoist the flag and turn in loot there.
Sinking sich ship grant you this flag, what can be turned in in another region to raise your rep too.
So you can work on rep by pve or pvp.
You cannot raise rep for all, just one.
The rep gives you lowered prices for the Shops of that Region.
Shores is Admiral, Wilds is Seadog etc...
People who want Admiral stuff then try to raise rep in the Shores of plenty.
New, expensive cosmetics could also be an incentive for the older players.
Also that fancy Admiral outfit need rep.
Same for the most dread Sea Dog outfit in the wilds.
It's like enhancing the level 50 cosmetics of the 3 factions, but for Regions.
We already have Sails for them from the Event.
