Possible to add fishing for Merchant faction?

  • I don't know about other players, but I myself dislike doing merchant faction quests, all that running around trying to catch the right chicken/pig. I do however love fishing in MMO's and other games like FFXV. What do players think about adding the ability to go fishing at islands to turn in for Merchant Faction rep? Maybe give quests where you get a barrel that holds "X" amount of fish depending on the rarity and you have to turn in at a specific Outpost, much like the Banana crates or cannonball requests. I think it could be better than chasing chickens and pigs. The barrels themselves could look different to show they are fish barrels and you could put the requested fish into one barrel for an easy turn in. Thoughts?

  • @toji-suzuhara this suggestion is much more common that you think. But that doesn't mean I disagree! I think fishing, crabbing, and diving in reefs for treasure should be more fully integrated.

Fish would be a good way to explain timed missions because they rot

  • I would prefer to see fishing being available anywhere on the seas. This gives crew members something to do for fun while traveling. There could be different fish available in different areas. For example, on the high seas you can find marlin and tuna, while near islands and reefs you could fish for grouper, mackerel, and bonito. Certain waters, like inside Thieves' Haven, can have more rare and specific types of fish that can be sold full price without an associated voyage. With a few types of fish available in different areas the quest would be fairly similar to what Merchant voyages are like now.

On top of this, I hope to see a bit of a fishing mini game similar to games like Stardew Valley but without a UI. Casting distance could be determined by how long you hold down the fire button. After casting, holding the fire button could reel the line in. When a fish bites, the fishing pole could bend and the player grips the pole and yanks a bit to hook the fish. The player starts reeling it in, with the fish pulling left and right. The player would need to counter this by pulling in the opposite direction. If they don't, the fish may escape. Occasionally, the fish will jump into the air, giving the player a glimpse of what the reward is. While in the air, the player could hit the alternate fire button (right click/right trigger) to pull the fish in a bit more quickly for a moment.

  • @sirturbodave I agree. I think making the fishing more of an optional side activity would be more meaningful. Even if there was a separate faction associated with it, but the progress doesn't affect achieving legend. Plus it would just be damn good fun.
