Sot vs Blackwake

  • The reason of making this is that, I dont see much video or discussions of the pros and cons between the two, so i just like to throw my hat in an see how this goes. Now before I go into this i like to say that im not going to be basis on this as i only want to see the differences from Sot and blackwake as they be two of my favorite pirate games as this just be my opinion of what i think of the games but what each game have that maybe similar or different.

To start off is the prices of the games. Sot: $60 U.S (or $10 a month in gamepass) Blackwake: $20 (This game is still early access but can be found on steam)

.Sot is more of colorful and cartoony type in graphics and gameplay. For Blackwake its more of realistic kind of look (ex: Black Flag).

.Both of these games are multiplayer only, only difference is that Blackwake is fully pvp unlike Sot as its Pve and PvP

.Factions in Blackwake is basically Pirates vs the British Navy and for Sot is crate your own adventure which it can be anything you like in the game.

.Unlike Sot of having three fractions of quest that is for PvE, Blackwake has game-modes in it, such as Team death match, capture the flag (in this case, capture the chest), and Siege (still an experimental gamemode but its fun)

.This might be some of the main things people want to know is ship types, but before going into that, just remember that Blackwake was released in Feb 2017 so they had more into it unlike Sot, since they released in 2018. So for Sot ships is the Gallon, and the Sloop. For Blackwake the list of ships are like this as far as I know.
.Galleon, Cruiser, Brig, Schooner, Junk, Hoy, Gunboat, Cutter, and the Bombketch.

.Blackwake is more multiplayer strategy game as there be one big crew and two small ones that works together to defeat the other team as its a team focused game. Sot however is more on the crew itself and to explore and rank up to legendary status or have fun and do other things.

Progression system is may be a twist with these two games, for most that know in Sot is that doing voyages and getting gold, and you can use that to get cosmetics. Blackwake is..quite similar to Sot as for mostly cosmetics to custom your pirate, however it doesn't require gold but requires a certain level to unlock it. For the most part the amount of cosmetics is somewhere the same amount between two games. As far as I counted Blackwake have 99 cosmetics to custom your pirate and I think Sot is close to that (correct me if im wrong)

.Weapons would probably the last part of this as I wont go over all the names of the stuff in Blackwake I would say the amount of stuff is in each category (unless a lot of people want to I can edit it in later in this post) 4 Main weapons, 5 secondary, 6 melee, and 4 specials (can be use for getting health back or an extra weapon that can cause massive damage but runs out it after a certain amount of uses) For Sot is a bit short on that but I bet more is yet to come to fill it up with more choices but at the moment it has Blunderbuss, Eye of reach, Pistol, and a cutlass.

For the most part that Blackwake is mainly just PvP unlike Sot which has more to it in PvE such as THD, kraken, skeletons, skull forts, and have more tools that be more towards having fun with your crew. Like I said before, this is just something that I haven't seen much talk about and so I like to share how these two are different and similar is some aspects in gameplay. Im not saying sot is bad, it just needs time to grow and to become a great game. Only time can tell, but let me know what ya think of these games and why you think which one is better for you, until next time, far seas matey!

  • SoT is on console. SoT wins.

  • I was wondering about this game. Thanks for the unbiased info mate

  • @nwo-azcrack No prob, I do recommend it as it is fun seeing and playing on a historic looking ships which im all for that, mostly if more info of the game, you can go to Blackwake discord as its there place of updates and news kinda like Sot Forums.

  • @marsmayflower Well that be valid point, but if some people are more into playing on the controller I believe Blackwake is able to played on a controller. But still, fair point

  • @emerald-hyper also in SoT you control a pirate who sails a boat instead of controlling a boat.

  • I haven't played blackwake in a long while, and it's probably changed a lot since then. It was a lot of fun though. BW and SoT are entirely different beasts for sure.

BW is for hardcore naval battle. You can be on a ship with 20 cannons and coordination is key. The captain plays a huge role in directing everyone. And firing the cannons involves getting the gunpowder, packing the gunpowder, getting the cannonball, packing the cannonball, and then firing. There's more realism.

SoT on the otherhand is for the SWAG.

  • @xcalypt0x Ture, mostly it be a gallon crew that uses teamwork without having just one person having more control than others, and for sloop crew it be the exploration and experince that comes for sailing the seven seas the way they want it.

  • @harlton-cheston I always find BW in the middle of Dot and Black flag for me ag least, as its not too goofy but not super realistic, as the game and moments in BW can have one the funniest things to happen from the things you least expect, but overall both games are pretty fun, depends on what your looking for.

  • The ships look nice in Blackwake, but the character models look like they're from Mount and Blade Warband. While I'm not usually a fan of cartoony graphics, SoT does it well. It works and has an amazing beauty to it.

I also like doing things other than PvP as it enables some form of roleplay. I hope they add far more options in the future to SoT for that feel.

The only perk that I see Blackwake might have is that it has several ship types rather than just the Sloop/Galleon that SoT currently has. Hoping we get a six-man (maybe eight?) ship at some point. Since we can't join servers with friends, I need a larger ship!

Faction, not fraction, btw. That seems to be nearly as common an error as people using rouge instead of rogue.
