Respawns after a ship sinks - Curious of your opinions

  • After a ship goes down. Players that died during and sometimes after the ship is considered "down" get that final respawn where they get to choose to continue the fight or take their mermaid.

I don't have a complaint either way but I was curious to hear if others think players should be granted this last hoorah.

The reason I ask this is because there are certain instances where a galleon crew will be sunk at a fort and as one player or two begins to bring their boat back the rest of the crew will stay to troll and buy time and it always has me thinking do they even deserve this opportunity?

Let me frame the question this way. If someone walks through the ferry door and their ship has been sunk and is past the point of no return...should they respawn at their new boat or not?

    IMO, yes.

It's tough because I have become accustomed to waiting for their final respawns and making sure they die or take their mermaid yet part of me feels they should just respawn at their new boat.

I totally understand anyone who feels they deserve one last chance at payback.

  • @sneakler Same. It really doesn't bother me. I'm used to making sure they are dead for good and I would be perfectly fine if it continues like this.

Would rather have dev time go to something else honestly.

  • Its fine the way it is.

Having been on both sides, I like it. We even lost our galleon to a solo sloop respawn(disappointing because I told them to watch for respawn), while we were engaging an opposing galleon.

It's easy to defeat if you are paying attention and usually sharks will finish the job for you.

As the surviving ship, you still have a mobile respawn, so don't be reckless and you will be fine.

If the ship is truly gone, they do usually spawn at the new ship, I think they only respawn if the ship has not completely despawns before they come through the door.

Yep, I feel like they are respawned at their new ship if their ship is actually at the bottom of the ocean and has disappeared. in 90% of cases it is no problem just waiting for them to pop up and killing them again.

It is the situations where there are multiple ships involved or you are at a fort where their ship is gone and they respawn in the water and they are all trying to keg you and such that you have to be careful. I just never see people talking about this and wanted to hear everyones take on it.

  • Everyone should respawn where they died until the ship has been sunk for more than 30 seconds.

It's not consistent and makes the black loading screen a variable.
There are multiple instances when I hear people in chat trying to repair, fight, bailing and I'm entering the door and get stuck for like 12 seconds while the ship then sinks, only to respawn on an island with a new ship.

There needs to be a set delay so the decision isn't waffled back and forth from client to server.

An extended black screen is just awful. Especially in important moments.

  • imo the player spawns are fine the way they are but the recently increased spawn distance really didn't solve the problem they were trying to of defeated ships coming straight back to a skull fort. it still needs to be farther away

Yeah this mechanic is inconsistent. A week ago we had a ship return 3 times and on the 4th fight we both sank and we respawned in the very corner of the map but the 3 times they went down they were back within 5 minutes or so. I understand people coming back for more but the respawns should be consistent.

Since the game can detect that you are near a skull fort with a key so you are not migrated then they should detect when you are sunk near a skull fort and give you a maximum distance respawn 100% of the time.

Whenever the black screen is up for more than 10-15 seconds, I know it all went sideways...

  • Yes there is no reason for them to spawn on a sinking boat to only take the mermaid try to troll a kill or 2. No progression can be gained.

  • @sneakler I think people exploit it and scuttle right before sinking honestly. I HATE that.,.... it happens way to often and deters me from going to forts.

I think you are talking about getting around the spawn being far away, I think this is in regards to a player respawning in the location where the ship was sunk.

If they are on the ferry and their ship is sunk, but not despawned, often they will spawn where the ship went down. The results in having to kill them one more time to eliminate them and make them spawn on their new ship.

2 separate but equally annoying things lol. I mean when I sink a ship at a fort I think they will scuttle the moment before it sinks to get a closer spawn to exploit that feature. as for the respawning after its sunk at the original location that's just a nuisance for both parties. as the victor you need to wait for the mermaid to disappear as the loser you feel obligated to go full out and try to get a kill or steal their boat without even having a way to reap the benefits.

  • If they die and are on the Ferry, and their ship is sunk then there is no ship to respawn to.
The Mermaid is there to return you to your ship. Not be a spot for you to respawn to.

My opinion is that it should remain that way. You dead + ship sunk = you lost the engagement.

  • I don't think you should spawn on the boat ever. When you die you should spawn at an outpost and have to take a mermaid back to the ship.

  • Honestly, I strongly prefer a no-respawns, ever system. Elimination style where the player doesn't come back at all while the ship is still "in-combat" (enemy players within 100 meters or so near your ship). So you can imagine how I feel about an after-loss respawn.

Lol. I can imagine this being the mechanics for a hardcore type mode a year from now on this game. The map table would have no icon telling you where you are at you would just have to know from the nearby islands and if you die you couldn't come back until your ship was a safe distance from enemies. Sadly I don't know if this game has a large enough hardcore population : )
