So currently the game has two ships, and each one is fun and flavorful in its own way. They're pretty well balanced (well, one is more often the cat and the other is mostly the mouse) but I think we could do well by creating a bit more diversity on the seas... frequently, I find myself crewing up with 2 other friends at a time, sailing a sub-optimal Galleon but still having a ton of fun. It got me thinking: would a 3-player boat make a cool addition into the game? something that strikes a nice "medium-class" spot between the Sloop and the Galleon?
I started looking at some age-of-sail styles of ship, and the good ole' fashioned Brigantine caught my eye.
In the context of Sea of Thieves, I picture a Brigantine having 2 cannons per side, and striking a nice middle ground between the Sloop's maneuverability and the Galleon's durability. It would be more complex to sail successfully than the Sloop, but not quite so slow to reaction as the Galleon is (turning the wheel, raising the anchor, adjusting sails, etc.) Two cannons per side is enough for a pair of players to get good firepower while a third player steers the ship or enacts repairs as necessary. Two masts gives a decent topspeed, although not quite as swift as a 3-masted Galleon can be on a long straight course with the wind at its back. Having a second mast also allows plenty of options for sail control (tighter or wider turns, adjustments to combat speed for cannon-aiming, etc.)
What do you all think? Would you sail it or sink it? Overall I think it could be fun, and a good way to spice up the tactics of the game with an additional ship type.
