Where are the rest of the cosmetic items? Possible false advertising?

  • @fullmetaljakee said in Where are the rest of the cosmetic items? Possible false advertising?:

I'm just annoyed that items that were shown aren't currently in the game. It kind of gives the impression that we were purchasing something and not receiving what we thought.

This is why I'm calling it false advertising. That shark ship is not available in the game. Not "you have to unlock it by becoming a legend" it is flat out not there. They are advertising items in their launch trailer that are not obtainable or accessible at launch. How is that not false advertisement?

  • @baronstinkbeard said in Where are the rest of the cosmetic items? Possible false advertising?:

@arecbalrin said in Where are the rest of the cosmetic items? Possible false advertising?:

@baronstinkbeard Your entire choice of language there is made up of unrealistic expectations and absolutes. FYI: other games include disclaimers in their promotional material, it is so common as to be practically universal. That SoT had none means that legally what we saw 'was what we got' plus everything implied in association to it; it was the minimum expectation, not the absolute.

Name any other mmo that is like this... There is not a single MMO out there has any Disclaimer...

This isn't an mmo... Its a game that has a multiplayer feature to it, but it is not a massive amount of people. There are 6 ships to an instance maximum.

  • @baronstinkbeard said in Where are the rest of the cosmetic items? Possible false advertising?:

    @arecbalrin

They have not advertised anything that not in game or coming.

IF you think they are falsely advertising what things are specifically not in game that are in advertisements.

And specifically I mean. Not your pseudo-legal bull c**p. Specifics.

Alright ill do that. In the trailer i posted to a previous response asking for proof. In said trailer, which is the LAUNCH trailer for the game, meaning everything there is advertising a finished game, there are at least 2 ship skins/sails/figureheads (i.e. shark ship) and 1 full set of items (looks like a Spanish conquistador set) that are currently unobtainable because they do not exist in the game. Seeing as this is the LAUNCH trailer, it is reasonable to believe everything shown is currently obtainable. So the trailer is lying in that regard, and there are no disclaimers showing it is a work in progress or that it is not representative of the current release. That is where the legal comments come in to play.

  • Link? I've not see anything more than what is in the game, they removed a couple of ship items from the beta, but that's about it.

  • @zalm said in Where are the rest of the cosmetic items? Possible false advertising?:

I just dont think they have gotten into adding them. Yes the limited cosmetics suck, but the game likely isnt really finished. They are adding more, I promise you that.

THIS IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE ANSWER!

Stop using this c****y excuse as an acceptable answer to when people question the content.

That's like me buying a Ferrari that doesn't come with any of the stuff that makes it a Ferrari.

How p****d would you be if you were to buy a T.V, and said T.V didn't come with the ability to change inputs? They said it had 5 different inputs, the HDMI slots are in the back, but it doesn't support it on release, and that in 5 months they were going to release the other inputs. You would be appalled and p****d. What if you bought a computer, and it was a bad a*s expensive, cool looking computer, but said computer didn't come with a graphics card, because they didn't have time to put it in, but it was going to come later...

Now imagine you own this computer and you're obviously p****d, and you have intel fanbois telling you to just be patient and that the graphics card will come and for now you have a c****y graphics card that lets you do a few things, but not everything you were told your AAA computer would do.

That's how people feel about this c****y argument.

Its on page 2. The trailer. Go to :43 if you want a specific outfit. And the the stuff that was in the beta counts for this too, as clearly it was ready enough for a beta to make use of so there's no excuse for it not to be in the full release.

  • @dr-killjoy147 no excuse for it not to be in the full release.

That's not how betas work? They're used to test things... if it's taken out of the official release then it's likely it had some kind of issue they didn't want to contend with on release day. It's the specific reason betas and testing exist. Plus it's only 2 ship skins, not a big deal.

All the stuff scrolling along at :43 is in the game. They're mix and matching items from different sets.

Tell me where you buy that steel chest plate then?

And a ship skin does not need to be tested. It is literally a texture that uses the same mapping as every other ship hull. Same goes for sails. There's nothing to test in that regard. And even if there was, there were no issues with these things in the betas. So there is no reason for them to have been kept out of the main release.

And the amount of items missing is not the point - Its that they were in game before and now they are not. Texture maps don't need to be beta tested beyond "did it show up?".

  • Here is another example. This outfit is not in the game.

  • #nerfcosmetics. They are clearly an exploit (see ship sails exploit thread)

  • @baronstinkbeard Why are you specifying the MMO genre? This game isn't even an MMO but a limited 'live service' game where only 20-30(no one really knows) players in a shard. It makes the 'name any MMO' challenge a trick-question and never mind what the underlying point of it even is.

Because Sea of thieves is an MMO. It is the epitome of an MMO. It Large Scale, Multiplayer, Online game. That is an MMO.

It is not wow or rift, or FFXIV, but it is an MMO and it is Game as a service meaning pay once and other things come.

Now are you gonna tell me that because Guild wars 2 has a character on their loading screen and website that is not found any where in game, that it is false advertising? Get over yourself.

OH And I bet you give star citizen a pass too...

  • Cosmetics is not the purpose of the game. It's a simple way to personalize your experience.

The game just came out, so why are people expecting perfection. The foundation and stability of keeping servers up and connections stable is mainly what they have been focusing on. They were very clear in their updates to us about that.

The purpose of SOT is to connect, meet up with friends, try....to make new ones, sail around looking for loot, fight the Kraken, fight the raids, battle it out on the seas, and mostly, keep your boat from sinking (enemies, storms, Kraken, rocks, etc.)

Basically, have fun. If your here looking for the magical box that will open up and fill your heart with love and joy and purpose and the meaning of life, your going to be disappointed.

Use your imagination, go shoot yourself out of a cannon at things, sail around the edge of the map tempting fate as you look for the ship wreck in the red sea, go find a boat to sink and get into a glorious battle, sail into a storm, and finally, sit in the crows nest and enjoy the amazing sunsets while you eat a banana!

    Be creative, not entitled.

nope! they never said how much you would get, also updates will bring more if your really worried wait it out.

i hate posts like this, woukd you rather they delayed releasing the game? it was clearly behind schedule and some things had to get dropped in order to meet the deadline. i for one rather play this now as is and get updates than wait another year for the polish.

In the wise words of Shigeru Miyamoto: "A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever."

There should be a "but usually it's too late to fix it by then." So you either have its good or it's bad.

  • @baronstinkbeard Because Sea of thieves is an MMO. It is the epitome of an MMO. It Large Scale, Multiplayer, Online game. That is an MMO.

This would mean that games like GTA5 Online and Minecraft also fall under the MMO classification. By definition MMO does stand for Massive Muliplayer Online, however, the term is now used to classify a certain style of gameplay. MMO's generally have a power level of progression and give you class specific roles that you can balance and level up. This game is better classified as a Shared Open World, but not specifically a MMO.

No mine craft is not because Minecraft does not have to be Online.

And that is first I have heard of MMO being like that.

  • @baronstinkbeard If SoT is an MMO, then Team Fortress 2, the original Battlefront games, ARK: Survival Evolved, even PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds are all MMOs. It becomes a meaningless genre category. One genre-defining feature of MMOs is persistence for the game-world. Not the characters and players, but the world: it exists when ever the server is turned on regardless of who is logged in. SoT does not have that: whenever the message comes up saying new ships have entered the world, that shard has been closed due to a lack of players and the few players in it getting the message are being moved to another one. There is no persistent online world in SoT, just sharded game sessions with at most dozens of other people.

I do not give any game a pass. I criticise because I care, because the future of any game depends on the feedback it gets and no game has ever become better as a result of praise for the developer. People who get offended by negative feedback for a game and seek to shut it down are a minority, but they are a minority that kills games which depend on a certain number of regular players for their longevity.

If your goal here is to 'win', congratulations: after 30-40 hours playtime I have made a refund request and it has been approved. I had a long discussion with the agent and gave them my feedback. My feedback has been flagged and justified a refund despite the length of time since purchase and my played hours. My investment in the game and my concerns about its future are now considerably lessened and there will be no more of this unwanted negative feedback from me here on the forum; it's gone to a place where it will be appreciated. I went from being a 100% fanboy for SoT a few days ago, to this. Perhaps in six months something will have happened, the game will be turned around and I might feel it is worth trying again.

I doubt it. My friend has expressed an interest in my SoT controller although he doesn't care much for SoT, so I won't have this painful reminder of how much I cared hanging around. Or if I do keep it, it will remind me not to pre-order live service games where developers don't answer straightforward Q&A submissions or go into great detail about content and gameplay loops. This is what 'buyer beware' does to products and the companies that make them.

Like I said its a classification that people use to describe a certain style of game. If I asked you to list MMO games, you would never say the Sims or racing games like Wikipedia refers to. While I understand the name literally translates to Massive Multiplayer Online, the term has a different context to anyone that has ever played a legit MMO game (WoW, EverQuest, Guild Wars, Etc.)

  • @lumpaywk yes, yes i would have like them to delay the game... I would have like to play a full game. for a cosmetic only game there are no cosmetics... the game is fun buit you cant say it is not missing content...

  • People white knighting this please just stop, how is it not false advertising when you specifically showcase something in a launch trailer of a game that on release does not contain that content?

It's so damn simple to understand this, if you sell a product expect people to want the s**t you put into the commercial for it, like would you people be okey with a comercial for a new coke soda and when you buy it it contains orange soda? because they didn't specifically state it wasn't orange soda? hell no you wouldn't. It's okey to "defend" a game you like but holy c**p the people defending stuff like this is the reason we get s**t releases nowdays.

  • @dr-killjoy147

I agree. For a game that prides itself on being a rich, cosmetically driven game and only having four armour sets on release, I genuinely believe it's a pathetic attempt by Rare. Where are the basic cosmetics? Blue shirt, red shirt, striped shirt. Red hull, blue hull. The one thing I expected from this game, was a lot of cosmetics upon release. It's no understatement to say that I was surprised at the lack of cosmetics. I wasn't expecting a huge, wide array of cool cosmetics, but I was expecting a lot of cheap, basic, starter cosmetics for players to get their hands on while everyone is on low gold. I share your thoughts, sailor!

Well here's the issue with that mentality - I've done all that stuff already. I've experienced every bit of what this game has to offer except the pirate legend stuff, which just turns out to be more of the exact same, not even unique missions. Arguing that the main point of this game is to "make your own fun" is kind of mute when everyone attacks each other on sight. So that leaves the grinding for gear, the carrot on the end of the stick that gives you something to strive towards. We aren't looking for a magical box to give us stuff, we're looking for something to make progress towards. When you only have four variations there's not much incentive to do that, and the whole "make your own adventure" thing loses its luster quickly.

  • For emphasis, here is another video showing SEVERAL cosmetic items not currently available. the fashion show starts at 0:21

  • @dr-killjoy147 Its called Sea of Thieves. What did you expect it to be? Hunting for treasure as a pirate means sinking boats and stealing stuff.

Not sure what you expect, but that’s the game!

um.... what does this have to do with cosmetics available?

  • @dr-killjoy147 Nothing, thus why I said the game is not about cosmetics. There cool, but pointless. They only add a bit of personalization. Your reading into this to much.

What I am trying to say is if your looking to achieve something for gratification, this game is not geared for that, which is why people are screaming for content. You can add 100 skins and boat paint, and parrots for your shoulder, and other little goodies, but really what's the point of the game? Be a pirate. Go sail, find people, sink them, steal their loot, make friends. That's what the game seems to be about.

They could add a hundred voyages and tasks, and once your done with those, then what?

I think people are expecting way to much for what they have in mind. That's just my outlook, not meant to discourage anyone's dreams of the perfect game. I'm just being realistic from what I see so far.

why would i play without a goal in mind? Even minecraft, the king game of dicking around, is played by setting goals for yourself to achieve - like making a castle or something. This game has too light of gameplay to allow for that free form of creation, so other goals are made, such as completing your collection of outfits or something. They advertise the game heavily on it's customization - the videos in the main post are evidence of that. If you're arguing it's not geared toward that then we must not be talking about the same game here, since rare themselves have said it is, and since there's NOTHING else to spend gold on.

Like you said, it's about being a pirate. What is the point of being a pirate if i have nothing to spend the gold I'm taking on?

  • Large chunks got cut out of the release version to be dripfeed back to us as "add ons" because this is "a game as a service".
Atleast thats my take on it.

  • @lumpaywk

I actually would have preferred they delayed the release. "some things had to get dropped in order to meet the deadline" is basically everything wrong with the AAA gaming industry. The games gotta look nice and meet the deadline, who cares if there's anything to actually do in the game.

I've been waiting just as long for Witchmarsh to release as I have been for Sea of Thieves. They've had just as long to work on it with a substantially smaller crew and so far there already looks to be more to do in Witchmarsh than what Rare has planned for SoT for the next several years.
