Hesitant to play on a crew in a world where people demand mics only

  • So, I have a sore throat today. I don't want to talk. I want to play on a crew, but people seem to get angry if you aren't talking. I will type and use the emotes and listen to orders, but I'm so hesitant to join people now because of people being toxic to micless players. From this end, I wish Rare would make mic-only matchmaking and anything goes matchmaking too. So for now, I will play solo :(

  • Your sore throat will probably clear up earlier than they can code the solution they propose. I think it's important not to fragment the player base.

  • @gholin
I should be online tonight, somewhere around 9pm EST. My main crew of guys will likely be queued up, but if i have a free spot i'll throw you an invite. So what if you can't talk, i'm ok with it. If you can still hear us..great, if not, we'll work around it!

  • Yeah take care of your throat. Unless you can adjust sails or fire cannons while simultaneously communicating with the crew, you just won't be as effective and players will want someone else.

    Good luck.

  • @gholin

We had a really good crewmate earlier that was micless. Not a big deal really.

Side note, it's much easier to accept the micless crewmate if they are there from the beginning of the adventure rather than joining mid voyage and creeping around quietly on board.

This is what I'm talking about. Does this game really require that much? It's not that complicated to control its systems and follow orders and communicate, even without a mic. Someone tells me to adjust the sails, Then I tell people I adjusted them, or "aye!" I guess in a serious pvp crew it might be more important, but for treasure hunting and fending off enemy ships? half the time, those enemies aren't communicating either. Thanks @IISrgntWolfII! If I can be on then, I will look for your invite!

  • It would be nice to have a feature to matchmake with people that are all using mics and vice versa. I will usually play with anyone but it's so much more difficult to play when no one else has a mic. Sometimes it's so bad I will occasionally drop out of a few games until I find at least one other person with a mic.

  • Yeah, the difference is, I'm not quiet even without a mic. I talk and use emotes, and follow orders. I'm no ghost, I contribute to the crew no matter what.

  • @gholin well I’ll leave a crew if there’s no voice . Communication is key in this game if you want to succeed .

Even with a sore throat just don’t take unless you have to . Seems like a silly gripe.

You’ll have more miserable of a time solo sorry to say.

  • This game is so easy it takes minimal communication. The wind shows you exactly which direction to adjust sails, the riddles are easy, the maps show you exactly where the treasure is. Even the PvP is easy. If you have a basic understanding of games you'll have no problem. ive seen too many post about "communication is key". No, just don't drop the anchor every two seconds or troll people and you'll be fine lol

thank you! I agree. I've run in micless crews during scale tests and we not only sunk enemy galleons, but we also did really well adventuring! I am hesitant now to join crews only because of people saying they refuse to play with me if I don't have a mic, and right now (other than servers being down), I don't have a voice. But I am a veteran sailor in the game and am very team oriented.

The attitude against micless players will end up splitting and diminishing the community if more people hesitate because of this, like me. Right now I'm flying solo. Might feel brave later. Sucks I'll have to explain myself so they hopefully don't instabrig me, assuming I join the wrong kind of crew.

  • There really does need to be s filter to find people with or without mics

  • @gholin I had this during testing. Nasty cough. I jumped in and apologised that I wouldn't use my mic much. Everyone was cool and had a great time. I hope you can have the same experience. I was also on a crew on release night and was the only one on mic. Feel free to invite me to a crew, as long as everyone is having fun I don't mind that much.

It'd split the community, but that's what people who only want to play with people with mics want anyway.

thanks! I'm not a bad sailor and crewmate. I'll listen and communicate :) Fun with a bunch of salty sea dogs is all I want! Hope to play with ya sometime soon, if we ever get over lavenderbeard ;)
