Technical Programming Design Question (CPU/GPU)

  • Hi, Engineers!

Can you explain if/how Sea of Thieves uses multicore CPUs to its advantage; and, if someone were to build a new PC with SoT in mind, what factors might go into their decision making re: cores, parts, level of components, GDDR5(+) etc.

    Thanks,

I obviously don't hold anyone at Rare accountable for poor component/parts purchase decisions based on any explanation, and understand that no replies from any employees (if they're even posted) are personal or official recommendations, etc. (Silly to have to say it, but JIC!)

  • @jedi-jez I'll paste an answer I received some time ago on the forum regarding similar question about which component is more stressed. This might clarify things for you a bit:

Depends on your settings and hardware really! We've spent a lot of time optimizing both, and you can read a great post on this here: https://www.rare.co.uk/news/tech-blog-software-optimisation-part1. The game will make good use of whatever hardware you have though, if you have a high end GPU it'll make use of that if you have a fast enough CPU to drive it. If you're aiming for higher framerates (144Hz for example), you may find your CPU becomes the bottleneck regardless of what settings you pick.

Check the link provided, it's a nice lecture if you're into hardware/software dependencies.
