more realistic approach on sailing

  • In reality you cant sail against the wind and the square rigs (sails) dont have that much of angle.(cant be turned that much like in the game.) So people used even in 18th centuary triangular sails which would catch the wing coming from sides and square rigs were used mainly when the wind was coming from behind of the ship. So why not add some new ship models with also triangular sails and different guns, pros and cons. I know there is a lot of things devs are triying to do right now but at least if new ship models are to come, I think a more realistic approach would be cool.
    Also rowing could be a thing too. It could be used to go against the wind or just go faster.

  • This game isn't meant to be realistic. So sailing into the wind is fine. They probable will add new ships with different sail design but the sailing mechanic will remain the same.

  • @metalman981 I thought the sailing in the game was fantastic personally. Not too easy, not too hard. I agree with adding in new models/additions though.

  • @canadianmuscle3 i think triangular sails and rowing would spice the gameplay up quite a bit. I love how the sail go from one side to another when you are turning etc. It could make travelling visually better easier as you could take the wind from the sides. And rowing would add tactic choices too. for example are you going to sacrifices o crew member to row and go faster or is he going to fire a cannon etc. I understand that most players are ok with unrealistic sailing tho.

  • It is physically possible to sail into the wind, depending on wind force and water resistance, though much better to zigzag to reach your destination.

    Sails come in all sort of guises too, quadrilateral, square (off square) and triangle. I suppose it’s all depending on the type of vessel.

    Most of the sail boats (dinghy) I raced as a youngster were of the triangular type - bosuns, topper, wayfarer and even the OYC boats, so I see your point about the sails, but I also think Rare have done their research very well where it comes to the design of their galleon, but the smaller sloop could do with a bit more work if wanting to be more realistic.

    Either way, it’s just a game and I’m happy with both and would be even happier if more designs were implemented.

    I’m sure I saw a post on here somewhere with a members techs drawings of ideas. Off to find it.

  • Tacking does work in the game, This is the technique i use to out run other sloops. Sail upwind and zig-zag at a 45 degree angle to the wind. So long as you are quick on the sails, there are many different patterns you can use.

    Tacking, jibing, wareing all technical terminology for zigzagging, which is why I used this phrase to help others understand my point.

    In a game where I can shoot myself out of a cannon and my flintlock pistol can fire underwater, tacking into the wind (while skillful) would not add to the 'realism' of the game.

    I've no doubt there will be more ships. Right now there are two.

    If it helps you with realism sailing into the wind, pretend the bottom deck is full of oarsmen. ;)

  • Along those lines, I think it would be fun if wind strength changed. Quiet periods where wind is slow and fast where you have to raise sails to keep control.

    Someone did a test where they timed sailing a sloop with the wind full in their sails and again the same distance sailing directly into the wind...... the difference was 17%... that's it.

    It's arguably not worth adjusting you sails.

    Shooting yourself out of a canon etc are fun things that makes the game more enjoyable. In the same way I think that not being able to sail against the wind and needing to row or do zig zag patterns is fun. Also different sail types would be interesting. Like i said before I am not speaking about simulation type of realism.

    This is the Amerigo Vespucci, a tall ship of the Italian Navy (We, Italian sailors, are very proud of its beatuty). As you can see the (main) sails are very similar...

    I know your feels about realistic sailing but, as a sailor, I can tell you that the Sea of Thieves sailing experience is enjoyable, even sailing against the wind... it's a game, not a simulator.
