Another reason to be able to disable "crossplay"

  • Arr ya freebooters!

So during the scale test, I tried again to play with randoms on a sloop as much as possible.
For me it's a great way to meet new people (my Xbox friends list has grown huge thanks to SOT).

But with one random, I got in to the "crossplay is unfair" discussion. Basically, it wasn't really a discussion because he could agree with all the points we were discussing.
One that bothered me the most was the following:
On PC he admited he was using a little tool (a small executable) where he could set a little dot or even a full crossair in the middle of his screen to actually aim like you could in Call of Duty.

For me it's mainly stuff like this that ruins the idea of crossplay. Altho i'm sure Rare will do everything they can in order to prevent stuff like this from happening and keep the game as balanced as possible for PC and XBOX owners, I still think an option to disable crossplay should be there.

Any thoughts (maybe I'm over Over-Exaggerating)?

And remember: You can always trust the untrustworthy because you can always trust that they will be untrustworthy. Its the trustworthy you can’t trust.

"it wasn't really a discussion because he could agree with all the points we were discussing."
It was a discussion, what it wasn't: an argument, a dispute, a debate.

As for the dot on PC here is a little tool for you XBOX lovers:
Get bubble gum or paper, chew it, make a tiny BB, stick the BB in the middle of your TV screen.

This game wont be a bloody CS GO or anything, nothing competitive here, so I do not see any problems with having a cross platform.
Plus SoT is very clear on the topic, I remember reading an article saying that they do not want to separate player base. So I doubt they'll do this.

@ironuzuka I'm doing the best I can as non-englisch speaker to make my post as clear as possible, this actually helps, thanks!

I agree in thinking they have said this earlier, also I completely agree in this not being CS GO.
Hell, the time you actually encounter somebody in game is allready rare. Still sometimes, when you actually encounter somebody like when you aboard there ships, you get borderd, you want to sell your chests or try to kill somebody who is just trying to sell his, for that 10% of gametime, I sometimes feel that I could be unfair.

  • For me, there would be many other reasons, why there is an advantage for the pc players, but yours is a joke. You can use everything to apply a dot to your TV screen, so even if they had a way to disable this program for pc, they could just make a dot on the screen.

But i like the idea of crossplay, as this game isnt a super fast ego shooter game, its still pretty balanced.

  • @sowieso010 anyone could do that the old fashioned way and physically put a dot or something on their screen

  • @sowieso010 "I sometimes feel that I could be unfair." That's life, life is not fair.
The rule is very simple: if you play this game, you have to accept the conditions, one being that it is cross platform.
You can also buy a mouse+keyboard for the Xbox. Solved.

  • @sowieso010
    Aye, pc m*********e indeed!!

  • Why should the minority spoil cross play for the majority?

Cheat detection systems could be added to prevent tools being used like the one described in the op. Then again, there's nothing stopping somebody from sticking something to their screen either so this is something really out of Rare's control.

I like the idea of crossplay. It means I can play with my Xbox friends whilst I play on PC. It shouldn't be changed.

  • @porkin5 I definately agree on this.
I don't want to say that it should be disabled completely, as a player I would to like to have the choice to play crossplay or not.

The whole idea of this forum is to post feedback and thoughts. Saying "if you play this game, you have to accept the conditions" goes very much against what Rare is trying to achieve, that being to build the game with the community (that means us, including my thoughts and your responses).

  • I saw a very faint dot on my screen while on Xbox, Not sure if that was just my TV slowly dying or not though...

  • @ironuzuka
Yes & you can also buy controllers for pc, so maybe Rare should disable mouse & keyboard support, solved!

  • @katttruewalker
My sarcasm & dry wit a bit close to the knuckle again??

    I love crossplay really!!
Wouldn't have met you guys if it wasn't enabled!! I have also been playing on pc a bit more, just can't get used to using the keyboard again, fat fingers don't help either!!

  • @logansdadtoo

Wow i knew some PC players who spit at a paper and glue it in the middle on their Monitor.
Thats even possible for Xbox players.

And yes you can use a tool on Xbox too to show a crossair in the middle, even aimbots are avaiable for Xbox games. (Some of them simply increase the already implemented Aim assist to scary values, these dosn't use overlays to be not bannable - they are simply sticking a 2-3 cm thing into a "hole" on the console [used strange words because I would call it advertising])

I really hope there is no K/D ranking avaiable on wegsite or other stupid reasons for ***** cheaters to use their **** ...

  • @logansdadtoo I use a controller with my PC... Mainly because I like to lounge waaaaaaay back, also controllers are perfect for playing in bed. LOL

  • @logansdadtoo
Haha! Just a good excuse to post cat pictures!
That's the beauty of crossplay, the huge pool of soon-to-be friends out there to meet on the other platform, it's really is a wonderful opportunity to merge the two communities.

  • Cheaters should be banned but Crossplay should stay with use of Mouse and Keyboard. This isn't Overwatch or CSGO this is Sea Of Thieves, and splitting the console and PC players would mean that the community are split and the Developers would need to work harder to add to both servers. Also most of the Streamers and YouTubers who advertise the game are on PC. Meaning if the PC Server sucks, the game will get no advertising or help from the "Influencers" as they wouldn't enjoy it. Also it might also mean that the PC version gets updated before the Xbox as it would be easier for them to test updates that they want feedback from on PC and remove it quicker because they won't have to go through Xbox, which for updating versions for games takes more time. You would be shooting yourself in the foot if the crossplay wasn't available. There are Xbox Gamers who use PC hardware on their Xbox anyway who will still use mouse and keyboard the same thing as PC Gamers. If you think PC Gamers have an advantage (which they do not) save up and buy a PC. @Sowieso010 @KattTruewalker

  • I completely agree. I'd like to play controller vs controller. Especially when you spend hours gathering loot and then get destroyed by a PC players using a mouse and keyboard.

  • @ironuzuka not everyone wants to play a game with a mouse and keyboard. That's why they have a console and not a PC.

This solves nothing and you have no experience of how a translator works. The device your referring to can only manipulate controller input that is coded into the game. Now since the MAX turn speed on SOT is incredibly slow it is very unresponsive when using such a device. Besides this, the only decent translator is easily over £100 to buy. That’s slot to play for the sake of being ‘even’ wouldn’t you say?

Trust me, people do not pay £2K for a pc because they like the mouse control over a controller lmfaol. And some people are not wealthy enough to afford gaming PCs. Consoles are simply far more accessible to wider audiences

  • Personally i love when console players whine about crossplay, they don't seem to mind if the crossplay is to their advantage.

Advantage or no advantage i have yet to be sunk a single time after playing release, i only sail with my cousin and never in a galleon.

We actually managed to sink a galleon yesterday, admittedly it was 4 really terrible players that had a hard time working together so most likely randoms. However they took the time to chase us until we docked our ship and gave them a hard time with our single cannon on broadside. While my cousin was laying waste to their ship with his cannon, i managed to get on board and kill several members of theirs, stealing a few chests and skulls before departing.

I will grant that it is too difficult to sink a galleon as it is with a sloop, two man ships needs to be larger than one man for sure so they stand a chance against a galleon even on open sea, otherwise you might aswell remove all other ships and keep galleons.

Also i really didn't see a reason to remove the ability to take over other ships like in beta, this was actually way more fun when you were able to board a galleon as 2 man and use it. To me if you are able to take over a galleon with a sloop and defeat the players on board, you deserve that ship more than the previous crew.

  • Guys there is a big discussion on this here https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/36482/mega-thread-play-anywhere-cross-play-and-balancing-part-2?page=1

Let’s try and compact it all into one place so the devs can see things clearly

Controller v keyboard and mouse needs a fix let’s make #RAREaware

  • See, I like crossplay for the aforementioned reasons, but yes, I've noticed some very odd behaviour that seems impossible to recreate on a console. Considering the number of PC gamers who glamorise cheats and mods for PC games, console players' concerns are not exactly unwarranted.

I think that there needs to be some middle-ground here, maybe a reporting feature and/or a block list?

  • @sowieso010 said in Another reason to be able to disable "crossplay":

did he say executable? if so he is fresh noob this feature now comes built into the majority of new PC monitors.

  • I have played since launch and 3 of last 4 days I ran into some hacking PC pirates. One enemy pirate stood there and let me attack him over and over, he never died, and after a few minutes killed me. Another time we were taking on a fort, same thing, and kept yelling profanity etc. yea , real fun.

So I highly recommend there be an option for disabling crossplay. Unless they are going to manage this and ban these players. If not, allow the option. I left PC for this reason and now I’m being forced to play with cheaters.

Disappointing too because some bad eggs have to ruin me wanting to support cross plays, but there is more risk than rewards. For those that say this game isn’t competitive and we shouldn’t sweat the cheaters you haven’t engaged in forts with other galleons. Most pirates who engage in this are competitive. Rare said from day one, they will keep the field at a level playing field, well allow me to play with console only, that will help because without preventing hackers your not preventing a level playing field.

  • so because someone has a dot in the middle of their screen, thats cheating?

PROTIP, get a small piece of tape, put it in the middle of your screen, draw a dot on it. OH NOES, now YOU must be cheating!

    pfft

  • Lol. There are a few legitimate concerns over crossplay, mainly Microsoft stubbornly refusing m/kb support, but this is not one of them. I play with a piece of electrical tape in the center of my screen, there's no need for an executable.

  • @rk1-turbulence I like your solution, lol. But if more games forced cross play, I wouldn't even own a console.... Seems like an easy solution allow enable or disable.... To easy.

Rofl, people used to draw a dot in the middle of the monitor with a sharpie to have a crosshair, what should Rare do about that? That little executable is harmless. Stop complaining.

  • No way...

    Really?

Ok, so my monitor has a bunch of crosshairs you can call up if you want them, along with framerates and timers etc... It's built into the hardware.

However, many years ago when Call of Duty didn't have a number or name after it, our clan used to put a little dot of liquid eye liner in the centre of the screen.

So, you can do this yourself. Just make sure you use the liquid eye liner as you can just pick it off when it has dried.

This is possibly the worst complaint about PC 'advantage' I've read so far. Now, try using a mouse and keyboard to get the ship's wheel dead centre, it's far more difficult than using a gamepad.
