What is the 'Golden Age of Piracy' [Sea of Thieves: End Game]

  • Mike Chapman-* "Pirate legends will not only earn the respect of their fellow players in Sea of Thieves. They will play a major role in the Golden Age of piracy that is still to come!"*
    @7:24

Joe Neate-"There's more to come, and there's more to come that we're going to show off there. We will leave it at that." Mike Chapman-"The Golden Age, is still to come."
    @44:20

I've heard this reference a few times now, and it's actually starting to come up even more often from Rare themselves. So what is it? What could this Golden Age of Piracy mean? What content will be available during this stage of progression? Is this even a hint at something at all? What are your thoughts on this subject?

  • @ethnine I hope that we get a golden name based on hours we spend on this game/amount of cosmetics we have

  • Yeah I've been saying this for awhile this is

Season 1 Golden Age of Pirates (The fight against the old pirates of the sea(skeletons)
Season 2 (maybe the navy starts noticing the chaos so a small appearance due to the legend of pirates defeating the kraken) Sea of Thieves War with the kraken
Season 3 In the Navy (full blown appearance of navy fighting back to kill the p*******s called pirates)
Season 4 Sea of Monsters (all sea wars causing a lot of big baddies to wake up)

    lol

  • @ethnine This game is going to take us through the golden age of piracy... its a good way for the developers to add features as we progress through time.

There were lots of advancements in these times and I can't wait to see how the story of Sea of Thieves matches that and tells the exact same story of the times.

  • @musicmee You played it already, I didn't. But from anything I saw I'm quite surprised that this game will actually tell me a story. It would be nice indeed :D

  • @jcmdeadpool We are the story... but the tools, buildings, ships and landscapes we see are all parts of a time period. This can be told from afar in how these landscapes and items change and progress into a higher, more powerful, more piratey era. There will be no story mode... but the way the era progresses will tell a narrative that is very clever.

  • @musicmee Ah, thats a nice way indeed :D

  • @musicmee so in your mind the 'Golden Age of Piracy' doesn't really mean it is an achievable part of the progression, rather simply part of the history of piracy being told through the game as a whole? I'm not so sure I agree with that idea, seeing as Mike seemed to suggest that the Golden Age of Piracy was something you entered. Then again maybe you're right, in which case this begs the question what is the end-game of SoT?

  • The "Golden Age of Piracy" was Napster...

  • @h0rse Limewire*

    Jk

  • This is a bold statement to say the least but I think the reputation you earn will get you into a golden pirate club, you may be able to access new items or even get a new skin for your ship to warn players before they let loose, maybe new missions as only accessible to a golden club member, but still does not mean his crew cannot participate in this. I think this is a unlikely end, but is just an idea.

  • I would be inclined to believe this may if anything be the term for the post launch development of the game. It could in fact, as others suggest or imply, simply be a direct reference to the launch of the game, when the seas will be populated with all us, well...pirates.

The only other way I could see the Golden Age play in, is if there's a specific directive as one pointed out, where by the growth and rise of the player base establishes the free run era, followed by events or introductions of the next era, say the introduction of the privateers or royal navy playable character factions.

  • @si7van Yeah that is what I'm assuming the era where pirates reigned supreme on the open sea, nothing in their way but an angry kraken and pirates of the old sea 'skeletons.

This sort of disruption probably will have some sort of story character fleeing to get help, introducing the Navy outpost which can hire pirates to be privateers (I think thats how it went) to capture Pirate ships and rid the world of pirates.

  • The context they say "the golden age of piracy" does make it sound like content we are unaware of yet. Perhaps its the community events theyve hinted at

  • @chosen-predator This reminds me of Pirates if the Carabian. Not a bad thing at all.

I like the idea of “the navy” coming along to tame the wild Sea of Theives.

  • I think the "Golden Age of Piracy" refers to not only us as players, creating this story as time goes along, but the path that we put the game on... I think that the future of this game is not only going to rely heavily on us making our stories and sharing them, but how we react to each others stories.... How we react to Rare's reaction to us. What we do when they see our paths and add content to correlate. This Golden Age is the entirety of SoT. It's how things will evolve and shape around us as we dive into this wonderful world, pick it apart, and put it back together in our own ways. In my opinion, on a broader spectrum for this idea that Rare has painstakingly crafted SoT into..... It's not just a Golden Age of Piracy for SoT, Rare is giving the world the Golden Age of Players for all developers to strive toward. They put the power in our hands because that's where the real enjoyment and fulfillment of game play lies.

  • DLC perhaps. What ever it is pirate legends play a MAJOR part. Maybe its amap extension only legends has access to.

  • I would say in the future in relative to the game the entire 10 years of support this game aims to have would be the Golden Age of Pirates. When we all first enter the sea and up until the very end of the Pirate Age (10 years from now) will conclude the entire history of the Golden Age. It would be cool to have a narrative given based upon all of our stories and voyages from the beginning to the end of the decade.

  • The Golden Age of Piracy is, in a sense, the entire 10-year journey through this game. The Golden Age of Piracy doesn't really exist yet, but once the game fully releases, the players will create the Golden Age of Piracy. They will create the stories, they will acquire fame, they will essentially shape the game as it continues to update.

As for the progression, it really corresponds to your reputation in the different trading companies. However, even with this type of progression there is an endgame. It seems like the first endgame (I've heard the endgame will get different over updates) is to achieve the title "Pirate Legend." Basically, as you progress through the trading companies you will be contacted by a "mysterious group of NPC's" who will ask you to partake in a voyage (no clue what it will be like). After completing this voyage, you will get access to a secret pirate hideout AND the title of "Pirate Legend."

In the hideout, there is a Pirate Lord who will give you legendary voyages (supposed to be the hardest and most rewarding in the game) and the ability to purchase legendary cosmetics. You also get access to a special "Pirate Legend" ship that you get to show off to whoever you may come across.

This is basically the endgame and progression system for the initial game. However, it will most likely change as the game expands.

    Happy Sailing!

  • I used to think it was just a marketing catch-phrase. But I think @Musicmee has it right.

Rare has been clear that player stories are being integrated into the world lore. That's what the easter eggs are. They are not just treats for alpha testers. After the game launches, player stories will continue to influence names (like the George and Kraken tavern), points of interest (like TaydogSwift's sign on Mermaid Isle or FizzyFox's wanted poster), and other hints at past events (the hidden skulls with golden keys painted on them, from an early community event). A week ago, I didn't know what those skulls were for. It was a history I had to learn from fellow players.

At launch, players will be able to rank up with the trading companies and eventually become Pirate Legends. There are also Commendations, which have yet to be explained. And a few months after launch Rare will add the opportunity to become a Legendary Captain with a recognizable legendary ship, ala the Black Pearl in Pirates of the Carribean.

I think that's when "the Golden Age of Piracy" begins. It refers to the beginning of player legends and a world that revolves around famous pirates. There will be many more easter eggs. There will be famed ships and captains/crews that players will be excited to spot on the horizon or meet at port, as if it was Captain Jack Sparrow and his Black Pearl.

Right now and shortly after launch, we are gradually shaping the setting by our epic feats and unplanned experiences. Eventually, new players will enter the game and begin with all that visible history. We are the first wave of pirates. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think "the Golden Age" is when new pirates mix with veterans and legends in an ongoing story that is already waist-deep.

  • @ethnine I've also noticed the increasing mention of the 'Golden Age' and here's my interpretation:

If you think of piracy per se, it's been around throughout recorded history and before, but there are particular periods where conditions existed such that it could flourish. The establishment of colonies and trade routes from the New World to the Old in particular during the 18th century.

If there was nothing to plunder, pirates would have no prey. The rich merchant ships, the Spanish treasure fleets, the horde of disaffected ex sailors and privateers all provided the conditions for piracy to flourish and the Caribbean and then the Indian Ocean with their lack of 'civilised' law and order, became their playground. A great many of our favourite pirate legends, fictional and non fiction come from this era. Pirates of the Caribbean, Treasure Island, Blackbeard, Sam Bellamy, Sir Francis Drake etc.

So if we transfer this to Sea of Thieves - this is our own world; we're here in a newly discovered area of islands, poor on the surface but with secrets, lore and treasures as well as incoming Trading Companies who reflect that search for new sources and markets in history and who provide motivation and sources of wealth for us. Maybe we're even a bit disaffected by existing worlds and games and seeking new opportunities, or am I taking the analogy too far here... ;) Sea of Thieves is also a fantastical world and one not accessible by everyone, like avalon or other mythical places and this allows for the likes of the kraken and potions as well as effects and experiences that are found in fantasy fiction too, it makes the experience all that more richer.

There are also other pirates sailing the seas, those discovering hidden wealth, exploring, trading and plundering - that's us. Some of us will become Legends, some of our stories will be written and shared, our fame will grow by word of mouth and our accomplishments become widely known.

Rare have told us that Trading Companies will come and go, the world will be mobile, it will be living and not static and this will also create new stories and adventures, motivations and styles of play.

Also, we know the Golden Age did end - circumstances changed, the governments of the world clamped down on piracy and it died down once again. Sea of Thieves has a road map for 10 years? I think that's a good long time for a new Golden Age and it's ours.

  • @h0rse said in What is the 'Golden Age of Piracy' [Sea of Thieves: End Game]:

The "Golden Age of Piracy" was Napster...

    The most righteous of days...

  • Ever since it was first said, I also thought it was a something of a marketing catch phrase like @hallower1980. But, the more it was said the more I started thinking about what the actual implications might be if SoT entered a pirate golden age. I think @KattTruewalker and @Musicmee, and hallower all hit on some great points, and so I thought I'd add some of my own.

I don't think the Golden Age of Piracy refers to the Sea of Thieves End Game. Rather, referring to the world changing as my fellow friends have mentioned. From the start of development, we've known that Sea of Thieves is subject to change. Not in the sense of them changing their core game-design, but rather that NPC's, islands, buildings, places might change. The motivations of certainly NPC's will change, as hinted at the conversations you can have with the lady in some of the weapon shops. She does not want to be there, talking to people like us pirates.

We also know that the Sea of Thieves is a mystical place, a place we came upon where not many people go to. But, just because that is how it is now doesn't mean it will always be that way. I always thought the Golden Age refers to that being something that changed, to more people coming to the world. That doesn't mean I think there will be more ships on the Sea, as the encounter ratio is important, but rather more of a presence of npc's on islands. More people, with different motivations.

So, while currently the outposts are the central hubs containing most the NPC life. I don't think this will always be the case, or rather I don't think they'll always be the only place that contain NPC's with their own motivations. We've seen various hints at other NPC's being around. The ship in Thieves Haven being a very obvious one, but there are many places on islands that hint at a presence of pirates and smugglers. And while they currently aren't occupied, the Golden Age of Piracy always seemed to be the perfect reason to re-populate some of those islands with NPC's that you can interact with that lead you to new things. That offer new ways of playing.

I think it's safe to say that there's lots more to come!
