When your approaching an island you can use your spyglass to see the name of the approaching island to either make sure it’s the right island or wrong one the pop-up should be the same as when you’ve sailed pretty close to it
Spyglass island pop-up
Not only is there a map, after a while, you learn to identify islands based on how they look, and the map starts to get memorized the longer you play. You'll get to the point where you'll know exactly what direction to sail for the next island you need to go to.

@europa4033 this was a suggestion for more newer players as myself
...of which I and everyone else used to be too, and also had to learn by constantly going to the map, finding the island, and learning the names and locations of. I used to wish there was a flashcard game I could play to learn the names of the islands.
Personally, I wanted to be able to just go wherever I needed to without using the map. So I learned one island, and then learned the others surrounding it. Once I knew that area well, I'd work on another area, and so on and so forth. This is how I learned.
But let me guess, you can't do that, and you need Rare to program our spyglass to show the names of islands.

QOL argument incoming 😂 it's usually in that order after "poor new players" strategy fails.
