Hourglass & Map Crews: Third-partying within the circle

  • Hi all,

If this has been discussed before and I’m duplicating a thread—I did a quick search but couldn't find anything—I’d kindly ask the moderators to merge the topics.

    HG: Third-party interference
It keeps happening (twice to me now) where crews on the map intervene, taking advantage of an ongoing Hourglass battle.

The first time, we actually asked our opponents to team up and kick the interlopers out: we were a Sloop, they were a Brig. Unfortunately, they didn't want to cooperate. They ended up sunk. Their loss, really.

Tonight, it happened again. We got caught in the crossfire—the wandering Brig seemed to have it out for us specifically—and this time, we were the ones sent to the ferry.

I’d like to hear the community's thoughts on this.
Also, a question for the devs: would it be possible to implement a mechanic where ships not opted into Hourglass start to sink if they enter the battle circle?

I realise that with the way the map works, they could still sit just outside the boundary and snipe away—we’ve all met that kind of player—but at least it might act as a bit of a deterrent.

    Cheers!

Pvp players complaining about pvp in a pvpve game.

Besides that. It’s a “battle of factions”
If I’m with Athena, and see reapers. I’m gonna support my fella Athena. Same if I choose to side with reapers.
If I chosen nether and happen to see two ships doing battle, I’m gonna join. It’s PvP

Nowhere does it state a strict “1v1” it’s a tool for instant pvp

  • Yes. Because hourglass takes place on the main server, getting 3rd partied is always going to be a possibility, and Rare has stated as such.

For me personally, if I see an hourglass fight near me, I may row over and start shout-casting, but otherwise I don't interfere.

  • @burnbacon it's already etiquette to not third party, also the "tool" for instant pvp is starting to turn into complete mumbo jumbo because nowhere does it act as a tool

Also, I believe purposefully creating servers just to third party hourglass fights is bannable (I heard that from multiple people, idk if it's true though), so separate servers for Hourglass fights are basically being lined up.

Cheaters also snipe... look what happened with TheBurntPeanut and Jynxzi.

  • Hourglass is not a competitive PvP mode, it's on demand PvP. It's just you asking the game to give you a fight. Sometimes people 3rd party you in fights.

  • @karminiumsot And it's the intention from the devs that if you see a fight going on, you could raise hourglass yourself and help fight for your side, bolstering the good vs evil narrative they want to push with factions. The players decided it's "etiquette" to not do while the devs say it's part of the game and lore.

It's a game, but lets imagine the situation as if SoT was reality. You as an athena see a reaper fighting your fellow athena. Would you stay back and let them potentially sink your ally because of "etiquette" in the middle of a war or would you go fight for your side? The battle for the Sea of Thieves is a war. It has war rooms, maps, planners, chroniclers, and (on occasion) real consequences for a faction based on winning or losing a fight. The battle for Golden Sands being an example.

Purposefully creating servers to 3rd party hourglass fights? What does that even mean? You have no control over creating servers, you have no control over who enters or leaves your server, you have no control over where they leave or enter, or why. How would you "create" a server for the purpose of 3rd partying fights you have no way to know are going to happen and no way to know where they'll happen.

Third partying is not stream sniping... those aren't even close to comparable things. With a 3rd party you see a fight that is happening on the server you're already on. With Jynxzi and Peanut, what happened was cheaters using programs to server hop, looking for landmarks like reaper chests and emissaries to fingerprint the server he was on to DDOS it. One of those requires nothing but owning the game and being in a server, and the other requires buying cheats and using 3rd party programs to server hop faster and scan servers.

If you think 3rd partying is stream sniping, you must also think being sunk for your loot is toxic.
