Is it hard out there for other lady pirates too?

  • sorry if this is the wrong section, I don't use this site often, but I've been playing SOT a lot more than I used to in the past few years. Felt this was the best place to ask. I've been pretty lucky with my interactions with other pirates on the sea that aren't in my crew, I've met a lot of other kind sailors out there. However, because I'm a woman I tend to have to sort of gauge when it's okay to use my mic or not to another seemingly friendly ship rolling up because sometimes they'll open fire the moment they hear my feminine voice or start throwing insults. Like I said I've been lucky in the fact this is not frequent... but it is mentally taxing to have to play this game of "is this person going to be cool with me or are they going to 180". Only one time ever did I meet another crew full of fellow gals of the sea and I got so excited... Is it hard out there for other girls? Are there other active lady pirates out there? I don't really understand why still open-mic games in this day and age have such a problem with women, but that's another topic entirely.

I just want to play and have fun like everyone else... I hope my cases are isolated and not the norm.

  • I have to ask.
Are the insults from adults or children?

Most cases, Its always the young kids who act as they are, disrespectful and stupid.
Because "Its the internet" and they will get away with it, because Audio complaints are difficult to trace or pin point in this game. (ive tried many times)

As for any actual adults who still play this game and do such things. Not much can be said, but not all of them act such. As you mentioned, doesn't happen often

  • @burnbacon Hi, it is most definitely adults. I have yet to actually run into any children on this game. I know I am sort of an edge case as whenever I play, I do go out of my way to avoid other player ships as much as possible. I have little trouble checking my horizons often and outmaneuvering reapers. I only really run into others when they stubbornly chase me, happenstance, or they approach with obvious good intentions (fireworks, cannons up, white flare etc.) It’s thankfully not often this happens but I notice things are usually a lot less awkward if I am muted and the other crews assume I’m a guy. Just the other day I was explaining to a player who was new at the game that I had just became friends with how the Ferry of the Damned worked, only to have another spawn in and say “Ew. You shouldn’t be talking to women.” I took it as a joke albeit in poor taste and laughed it off, but he mumbled something angrily after.

I’m not insulted by these people, as I’ve played other open comms games before and suffered much worse comments, but what bothers me about these things is it truly has weathered my ability to play with people I’m not already friends with, and it makes me sad to think I miss out on getting more involved with other players just because they can’t move on from the fact a girl is playing SOT. I’d love to join a welcoming guild and the like.
