Doubloon Currency - Developer Update

  • I have made several different suggestions over the years to deal with the doubloon & gold problems. They, like most things here, fell on deaf ears. Even my worst suggestions are better than this simple short term solution of "delete everyones doubloons" Since I didn't think of it at the time and other people have talked about how doubloons are simply a passive gain, which is nonsense because EVERYTHING in this game is then? Heres a few numbers... Since these decisions are being made for the sake of graphs and data points anyway.

Doubloons were tied to a lot of commendations, these were a 1 time opportunity. A year 1 argument I made about how the commendations for the bi-weekly events went away after the event ended. So people coming to the game later wouldn't have the opportunity to get this rare and more valuable currency (this was clearly before Rare removed doubloon cost from FOMO rewards thus leading us to todays situation). Eventually a lot of these old FOMO commendations did get added back with their doubloon reward (I think?) IE destroying each color of mermaid statue X times. But the completionists of this game will have long since done all this content so they are now locked out of those doubloon gains while new players will be able to obtain them still.

I don't know if these numbers are accurate since Rare for some reason hides the amounts from the season journey levels? So I am relying on goggle which tells me 220 doubloons, 180,000 gold. For me both currencies are useless but also a laughable amount. 1 old season cosmetic costs 700 doubloons minimum upto maybe a max of 3000. So that's over 3 seasons to even buy a cheaper cosmetic.

As I haven't logged in since this update as I was waiting for community weekend I also forgot about your "Early login bonus" Which was introduced I believe with the introduction of the voyage of luck? So now we also get 50 doubloons every month just for logging in.

It's not worth my time or the effort as it wont mean anything to dig through the wikis to get a total doubloon count for commendations and chapgpt is no help on this either though it did find a few patch notes that directly mention doubloon amounts. Patch 1.1.4 - 200 doubloons (gunpowder skeleton update) patch 1.1.6 (sunken curse) 150 doubloons, patch 1.4.0 (shrouded spoils) 355 doubloons.

So now that we have this update coming where you said you are going to be deleting everyones doubloons it seems pretty goofy that I am being given doubloons just for logging in.

You have claimed you are adding special bilge rat weekend events for us to obtain doubloons. But you aren't removing the doubloon sources currently in game that lead to this situation in the 1st place. Reaper chests, Gifts, Rag & Bone crates etc.

I say remove the 1 level per month purchase limit. It was added because people cried about new players being able to buy their way to pirate legend. Pirate legend has become a joke. It takes no effort to get to, and now takes no effort to level since there is a massive amount of loot to obtain for it now. More likely than not the players who have massive amounts of doubloons probably already have their curses. Add hourglass levels to purchase just put a much higher price value to really impact peoples doubloons. Also add reaper levels for the same reason. You had Sea Dog levels. Also raise the price of normal faction levels to maybe 100 doubloons per level instead?

    So... TLDR I guess

-Are you removing doubloon rewards from commendations since completionists can't reobtain these but new players can?
-Are you removing doubloons from the seasonal reward tiers? (Gold should be removed for sure, its useless)
-Are you removing the monthly "early login" doubloons?
-Are you removing doubloon values from selling ashen chests & keys?
-Are you removing doubloon bags from ashen chests?
-Are you removing doubloon values from tomes of fire?
-Remove reapers chests? Remove gifts? Remove Rag&Bone crates?
The whole reason you are doing this is to fix the bloat problem. But you have commendations to turn in 300 reaper chests = to 7500 doubloons (lets not forget emissary and boosted weekend bonuses) though this commendations counts reaper bounty & chests but even if we half the number it's still a lot.

PS another thing to consider. This is an issue more for active players. Imagine someone who took a 4-5 year break from your game and they come back to find their currency has just vanished. That there was FOMO cosmetics added to buy before this deletion event. The friend who got me into this game quit about 2 months after release. He came back once a year back and played for an hour and quit again because of how awful combat felt and the fact the game was still so janky after all this time. You have way bigger things to be concerned about than the currency people have obtained that you can't figure out a resolution to. Deletion is not the answer. It's disgusting and disrespectful and will have a psychological impact on some of your players. But hey, if you to keep making updates to push away more and more people... It's your game. Keep making the wrong choices.

  • 'These items will be priced highly, aimed as recognition purchases for those dedicated players who have spent time amassing a Doubloon fortune. We won't be sharing the cost for these items for now as we're making sure we get the prices of these just right.'

Mr. Stevens, and the whole Sea of Thieves decision team by extension,

As understandable as your reasoning is, keeping the information on the amount of dubloons completely secret is not something I can call acceptable in good conscience, given the fact you'll only give us a limited window of time to amass the necesarry funds for the purchase - many players (myself included) were flat broke, as the term goes, when we received the initial announcement on the commemorative cosmetics coming for sale before the Great Reset.

It's absolutely fine that you're still figuring out the exact pricing but for the sake of those of us who want to get ready in advance, I believe it's just common decency to give us an estimation, so that we can make a more informed decision on whether it's worth our time to go around dedicationg so much of our free time to grinding doubloons in preparation or we should throw in the proverbial towel instead, understanding there's no force on Earth that will let us catch up with the prices in time.

It's your game and your decisions, obviously, but I must implore you to throw us a bone so we can keep wanting to still play.

But hey, what do I know, I'm just some random guy on the internet who's been playing the same game for over 3 years nearly non-stop - it's not like my words are worth anything, eh?

  • Just bring back the Gold to Doubloon currency conversion during the time period when these mementos are available.

EDIT: I honestly don't know if this ever existed. I swear it did, and then I looked on the Fandom page and it says it did, but I can't find pretty much any other reference to it. If it didn't exist, introduce one for that limited time.

  • I think dropping the fact that there will be hugely expensive and exclusive cosmetics mere months before the reset is totally against player interest. I probably had 50k+ doubloons accumulated on my account over the past 5 years but I've been spending them on cosmetics (when they are added, like the Lucky Hand set) or gold during events that boosted gold acquired. Now I have only about 1000 and will probably not be able to buy any of these exclusive items.

The items should be awarded based on lifetime doubloon count, or at least be reasonably priced such that someone like me would be able to still purchase them. It's totally unfair to the players that saw there was nothing to spend doubloons on and would be converting them to gold whenever we could.
