New Black Market / Doobloon Changes

  • I’m honestly disappointed with the recent doubloon changes. Allowing brand-new players to buy cosmetics that were earned years ago without effort or long-term commitment really cheapens what those rewards originally represented. For many of us, those cosmetics were symbols of time, loyalty, and achievement.

Instead of re-selling old rewards, why not introduce new cosmetics that players can actively work toward? That would respect veteran achievements while still giving newer players something meaningful to earn. Right now, it feels like past accomplishments are being devalued.

  • @gfgeorges I think the team are aware that some items have some place in time value/you had to be there moments linked.

So I expect each one will be deeply considered before being added to back into circulation.

  • Hope they go from catering to the newbies and give some of us who been here so long. Those old sea dogs need some loving. ^_^

    But meh man can dream.

As for the doubloons. Take them if they want. I’ll just earn them again with ease. Game so simple even my other profiles match same numbers XD

  • Rare trying really hard to go back developing Kinect games? Or no games at all?

I‘ve been playing SoT for a while now and I absolutely have no faith at all in them doing so.

Hopefully I‘m wrong. Cosmetics are the only meaningful progression left in this Game.

Aye, I hope those items that were earned/bought because you participated in certain events stay time-limited.

Seasonal items, items from logging in at a certain time and such, sure let them become part of the new black market; not sure anyway if there are lots of people sailing around with e.g. S15 sails with the reason showing off they gained level x renown between Feb and May 2025. To me it feels different than earning csometics during Cursed Sails &c.

  • What I want them to do is when they reset the Doobloons, to automaticly convert all my remaining Doobloons into Gold, because I dont want to be standing at Larinna for hours with a macro to covert my 100.000 Doobloons into Gold manually. That is what I ask for, cause otherwise it would be just stealing our earned money and they can just go on and reset Gold for everyone aswell.

  • Great to see that some of the vaulted stuff is going to make a return. Sets like the Wailing Barnacle would be ideal from this. I think it was a purely doubloon purchase, no reason it can't be again. However I would prefer that anything that required an action or task be linked the a similar task or even a more difficult one.

  • It was a shocking decision to reset doubloons, but soften the blow with... cosmetics that year one, year two players already have. So the players that generally have the most doubloons are not going to have much to use it on before they get removed. Everyone was hoarding doubloons, waiting for something good to spend it on. And now, here we are, instead of giving us cool new things to spend it on, they remove it all so they can force players back into earning it for the new black market.

  • Rare,

I earned doubloons and bought everything I could with them. Now I have some extra. Who's fault is it that there is nothing more for me to buy with them? That's your fault.
Now you want to take them away as if I did something wrong by earning them? I don't think so.

Do you realize that if a government reset it's population's currency in the same way there would be major revolt? I wouldn't want to be a politician if that ever happened, nor would I want to be a Rare employee under these circumstances.

"We are taking away all your money... but it's ok... you can earn some back at a reduced rate! And you will need to earn it back on our strict terms because we think this will make you play our game more and ultimately spend more real money in the Pirate Emporium." That is the ultimate goal, it always is.

The amount of doubloons I have, above and beyond anything I can buy, is a testament to the time spent and stories told in this game. Now you want to take that away from me? That is my trophy, my bragging rights. That is very important to me and you simply don't care. To add insult to injury, you want me to start back at the bottom and work my way up? What makes you think I would waste my time doing something again that you will just take away at a moment's notice? You are just going to screw it up again.

I hear that you might give us a chance to buy stuff with doubloons before they get reset. Well, I've already bought everything... so you better be adding more items. There better be a solid gold ship set - head to toe - bright shiny gold, and comparable clothing & equipment. It better be something so unique that, when anybody sees it, they would know immediately how special it is.

If you do have items coming for us to buy, how would you price them?
Obtainable for the newer players with few doubloons? Obtainable only to the whales with tens of thousands of doubloons?
On one hand you make the new items available to everyone... this is not special for the whales.
On the other hand you make the new items available to only the whales, and this alienates the newer or casual players.
Whales spend a lot of money in the Pirate emporium... and so do newer players who are excited about the game. You are going to upset one or both off by doing this. Anyone who runs a business knows that you better not upset your customers.

  • @musicmee I hope so my fellow pirate!

  • There is no reason to gate keep old cosmetics, unless it's paid ones, because this kind of eFfoRt is just sitting in front of your game station and click some buttons.
They already brouhgt back: Celestial Steed set, Golden Sailor Cannons, X Mark the Spot and several Twitch Drops and Limited Time ship sets in to Emporium (Ancestral, Mayhem, etc).
Just because you played the game earlier it doesn't really mean you deserve these pixels more than new players.
The game need some sort of BLP for new players, since it's based on farming cosmetics.

  • @sp1derc4t sagte in New Black Market / Doobloon Changes:

The game need some sort of BLP for new players, since it's based on farming cosmetics.

Exactly. The game is based on farming cosmetics. By re-releasing time-limited cosmetics they literally take away players progression.

I‘m all for giving new players some unique cosmetics to farm. But why returning old cosmetics instead of releasing new ones? Veterans would benefit from that too. I simply can‘t understand why they can’t find a solution everyone can enjoy. It‘s really not that hard. Instead they decide to risk upsetting people again and again … I’m sorry, but in my opinion this is pure stupidity.

And I want to be clear about this: I never supported the FOMO-Mentality. In fact I was all against it when they decided to take this road on a regular basis. But they choose to go down this road, so they should at least be consistent.

They missed to give this game a proper progression system and gave it a FOMO-System. Since it‘s too late to rework the progression, they should stick with their original decision.

  • I‘m all for giving new players some unique cosmetics to farm. But why returning old cosmetics instead of releasing new ones? Veterans would benefit from that too. I simply can‘t understand why they can’t find a solution everyone can enjoy.

There is no solution everyone will enjoy, there will always be dissatisfied people.
On one side of the scale, there is a small percentage of veteran players, and on another, players who have joined the game in the last few years + players who will join the game in the future.
Players retain suck in this game: a lot of newcomers leave the game after they earn enough gold for a full DA set. Feature like Bad Luck Protection will give them, as well as returned players, a chance to obtain cosmetics they missed.
They have already cut the eFfOrT of insiders by giving them achievements based on their current skin rather than their current week.

I just gave one: release new cosmetics to earn for everyone instead of catering to just one group of the playerbase. There you go. It‘s literally that simple.

  • I just gave one: release new cosmetics to earn for everyone instead of catering to just one group of the playerbase. There you go. It‘s literally that simple.

It is actually more difficult than rotating old cosmetics, a lot of work required to make skins that fit the game, not the pixels from another universe, not another bunch of recolors.
Don't you think they run on a low budget with all of these recycled updates? Unlikely they are making any money from the game at all these days.
At least with black market update, they will get some players back online for a time and satisfy new gen players.

  • @sp1derc4t sagte in New Black Market / Doobloon Changes:

I doubt it. Players leave this game for more serious reasons like gamebreaking bugs, cheaters or simply because they‘ve played it for too long and want to try something new. I don’t think bringing back old players was their idea behind this change.

Reopening the black market is a good thing. Filling up it‘s stock with old cosmetics and wiping players progression isn‘t.

… but no need to argue about it. They‘ve made their decision and will even re-release year one cosmetics. Multiple times they have stated, that those won’t make a return. And yet here we go.

  • I don’t think bringing back old players was their idea behind this change.

It is the cheapest solution for bringing back some of the players and keep them busy grinding blue coins for old gen cosmetics, to increase the concurrent number of players.

Filling up it‘s stock with old cosmetics and wiping players progression isn‘t

They don't wipe users progression as long as they don't bring back hard-obtainable cosmetics like first year Golden Legendary Set, Arena items, etc. Most of the others og items were available for purchase for doubloons or giving for sign in/complete a simple quest/achieve a simple commendation. There are not many items that were giving for completing hard challenges.

  • @sp1derc4t sagte in New Black Market / Doobloon Changes:

It‘s also the easiest way of upsetting long-time-players. Also it’s pretty lazy. And it certainly won’t increase current player numbers. People are leaving this game because of it’s numerous problems like cheaters, bugs, lack of interesting content. Do you really believe some old cosmetics will bring often times frustrated gamers back? Of course not.

@sp1derc4t sagte in New Black Market / Doobloon Changes:

They don't wipe users progression (…)

Yes it is. It doesn’t matter in the slightest how those items were obtained. They made it a cosmetic based progression system leaning heavily into FOMO. They said - again: multiple times - that those won’t return.

Re-releasing former time-limited cosmetics means wiping progress if the only way of progressing in a game means collecting cosmetics. It doesn’t matter how items were earned.

Again: I‘m not a friend of FOMO and I really don’t want to defend this predatory system. But I‘m a big fan of consistency. They said those items were time-limited in the first place, so stick with it.

… but of course they won’t.

  • Do you really believe some old cosmetics will bring often times frustrated gamers back? Of course not.

Surely it will bring back some of looters who joined the game in period of late 2020-2025, after these skins became unavailable, just because they sold a way more game copies than in previous years (2018- early 2020).

I disagree that this would satisfy everyone. There are some people (I count myself in this group) who would like to see most if not all old items come back. While another group is completely against anything time limited returning. These positions are completely at odds with each other so it's impossible to satisfy both groups

The announced plan to bring back a select group of old items is a compromise. They say a good compromise leaves all parties a little bit unsatisfied, so this seems to fit the bill

In a perfect world I'd prefer to link old cosmetics to the original task thst was required to unlock them. Or make it harder if needed. Re package adventures as tall tales, re run events occasionally etc. Flesh out the old sets with some of the new weapons/captaincy items etc to give everyone a reward. Due to the way the game has changed it wouldn't be possible to get it exactly the same, but I think you could get close.

It’s very easy if you think about it.

New unique items will satisfy everyone. New players might prefer the return of old unique items (which ironically won’t be unique anymore after their return) but they surely will enjoy new cosmetics as well. I mean why wouldn’t they?

On the other hand re-releasing items that were promised to stay unique might upset long-time-players, devalue former unique items and won’t give veterans any reason to participate in the quests the reopened black market has to offer.

Yeah, I understand. I guess it's just a difference of philosophy. I don't put high value on uniqueness. I could not care less if someone had the same stuff as me. I just like things that look good. My current favourite eye of reach is the sapphire blade one, and anyone can get that with a reasonable effort. Maybe the completionist in me has something to do with it also.

I would never advocate for things just to be handed out to everyone. But I am of the opinion that what you do to unlock something is of much great value than when you do it.

  • I keep lurking the forums waiting for some news to drag me back.

    This definitely ain't it...🙄🤮

  • @musicmee The unfortunate irony is that the community at large has learned to expect counterintuitive decisions. Doubloons being their focus is one such example when the objectively most glaring economic problem is the gold. Millions to accrue with more loot being added yet skins to buy get more and more bland while the Emporium gets more to spend real money on thus furthering the gold's irrelevance. Trinkets are only a temporary sink since they cost tens to hundreds of thousands and the most expensive sets have become a meme.

  • @tommybermuda I don't even know why they even thought doubloons needed attention. Gold stands as a largely irrelevant currency while the Emporium gets more in stock than the outpost stalls. If the black market only takes doubloons, it will only make pirates' stacks of gold get higher with little to spend on that's worth buying. As you rightly pointed out, the Emporium is their prized market with the almighty dollar being the currency they actually care about.
