Aggressive Merging Off Detrimental to Gameplay - Dial it back

  • A Reaper Brig attacked my Reaper Fort on final wave. I keg em'. They sink.
Reaper Brig returned and was stocking up loot while I set my sloop off and rowed back to the fort with a special delivery. Keg 'em again.
My boat sank while vacant, I get killed and get merged off the server when I reboarded - not even that far away from Fort.

Unable to take part anymore in my hard earned Fort.

Why are we getting merged off when we have had recent interaction with players? Getting SANK 3 times by same players is an acceptable exception to getting merged off.

  • You said “my” fort which isn’t true
And as happy as I am to hear someone used there head by moving there ship and used a rowboat. That a shame but it happens. It’s the risk of a good plan.

But fear not. Once the new sinking system comes in. You won’t have to worry about contested pirates who keep coming to “your forts”

  • I think the merge system doesn't take player interaction into account outside of distance between ships.

If the server is set to shutdown/reboot, it will stop accepting other ships from matchmaking. I know it will merge if there are 2 ships but I'm not sure if it will merge away when it has 3+. It might just wait for ships to naturally leave at that point until it gets down to 2-3 ships left. This is why alliance servers can run for so long.

A ship will merge when all crew are on board, they are a minimum distance away from any other ship and they're not in an active world event zone. Sinking and respawning are likely to meet all of that criteria as soon as you step on deck.

  • its ironic that they insist on keeping this game pvpve but then they are both anti and pro pvp with the merging.

    1. i think it might actually be a new anti harassment change? think there was something on insiders about merging if you engage with and get sunk by the same crew multiple times. though if you think about it kinda fair if they are at a fort and you relentlessly keep coming back dwindling their supplies until they basically can no longer repair and sink out of lack of resources. thats how i used to do things with a friend in year1 before he quit. it was about who had less of a life and who could outlast the other guys. we would just annoy people making what should have been a 10 minute fort into a 4 hour battle and honestly the rewards back then, heck the rewards now arent even worth that kind of time commitment.

    2. if you are too far from other players and trying to be anti social they will also merge you in hopes you get put on a server closer to other people so they can come sink you.

so rule 1. you get merged as a punishment for trying to pvp over pvp content and losing. rule 2. if youre avoiding other players you are ruining their pvp experience by giving them lest prey to go after so we merge you.

i think with the new diving mechanic they really should do away with the forced merging. if they cant make up their mind about how they want pvp interactions to go also... just add pve servers already

  • @d3adst1ck you can indeed be merged off on full servers now. they have changed the rules. no anti social players allowed. no one plays in the devils roar. you want to hide out there cause you know you wont encounter others? well lets merge you! because its all about the pvp!!! so dumb. the old old rule way back when you only merged when the anchor dropped was also merging only happened if the server was empty i think. i ruined a streamers session because of this. i was bored and about to log off, got to the outpost to sell and heard some hot mics. they had the mermaid hot mic bug so i "stream snipper" (stupid term and concept imo, you cant force your way onto a streamers server in this game by select something like USeast 5) anyway i was going to help them work on commendations. but apparently we were the only 2 ships left on the server and memory leaking was reaching a tipping point so my decision to stay logged in to help them caused the server to crash when if i had just logged out like i had planned they likely would have been merged to a new server and been able to keep playing.

despite server jank still being a thing i did some messing around with some friends and we managed to keep a server up and running for over a week with very little impact on ping. though some other interesting things started happening lag wise, like harpoons being weird. i used to think the added "improved stability" note every patch was kind of a joke but they are relatively good despite the ever lasting issues

but yea i want old merging rules back. give us more control. also remove scuttle to a new sea. we can dive to a new sea why do we need to scuttle? i guess its 1 less step if we want to merge out manually not having to scuttle, then set sail on a dive (since we cant dive near other players but we CAN scuttle to a new server next to other players)

  • @keylessword4029 There is so much misinformation in both of those posts I don't know where to start other than to tell you to stop spreading it.

  • Whatever they did to change merging recently has made it SO annoying and I have lost loot multiple times because the game just decides to merge me for seemingly no reason. The check for active world events sucks because if you're doing the last world even on a server, it VERY OFTEN will merge you AWAY from your loot onto another server. I stopped doing skeleton fleets because it far too often will steal the good loot from the captains ship by merging it out from me. I'll sink them, then be force merged, and the loot vanishes. This game just can't let a good thing stay good. The new health bar has MORE issues with being inaccurate and updating badly. Sometimes it took half a second for damage to appear on your health bar in the old update, but in the current one if you are on fire, drowning, poisoned, or boiling, your health bar doesn't even move. I have had multiple times where I died with a "full" health bar because it didn't update and I don't get to know how much health I have. Even after eating. I was watching Theb stream a couple days ago and because of the new HP bar desync, he appeared to be one tapped. His HP was below full, and because of server HP desync, he appeared to die with full HP. His HP was so full that it was hidden.

Possession is 9/10 of the law - doubly so when it's a pirate with a stash of black kegs.

  • @potatosord if duo leave 1 off the boat to prevent merge. If solo….. RIP
