LAZY Island or Lobby for Pause/Safe area IDEA for a longer break without Lazy-Beard threat.

  • Hey all,
    So the premise here is a temporary safe zone that doesn't have the issue of your pirate/session timing out, and you copping a lazy-beard.
    I rarely have time to play a long solo session these days, so I find myself looking for other games. It would be a whole lot more convenient if there was a way to have a time-out (adulting etc.) without losing your progress. This idea is aimed at the solo player, who doesn't have the luxury of a mate to keep the boat whilst you're away.

    My idea is simple enough;
    You pop down a mission to sail to this place (lets call it LAZY ISLAND), sail through the big archways just like a tall tale. When we get there, all rules relative to diving or portal hopping apply, so only resources & emissary flag remain. You might still have a timer for how long you can stay, but it's significantly longer to allow us to get the time we need to life & adult & stuff.
    On lazy island, our pirate would be unable to fulfil any commendations or gain supplies, or really do much more meaningful than change cosmetics.

    A different version of lazy island might be where multiple boats could dock, allowing solo players to find other people to play with. It might be relatively simple, with pirates voting on certain tables to match up with their intended goal. Players would be unable to gain any advantage here (stealing supplies for example).
    Open crew is most times diabolical, so I wonder if a lobby-style area where we can speak and interact with others might be more palatable, especially given many of us live in area's where language can be a barrier.

    Cheers

  • I'm all for a social area in-game, but this would falter under several bugs and exploits. The two most prevalent ones I can think of being "What if someone doesn't log off, and just AFKs there, keeping their supplies and progress?", and "What happens when the server is shut down? Where would this be on server constraints?"

    Unfortunately, Sea of Thieves servers are potatoes running on a car battery (thanks Azure!). I worry features like this would apply a lot of unnecessary and unused stress to the servers, taking away from the players who need the stress reduced on the server for things like combat encounters.

  • The ferry is perfect place to meet and greet.

  • You could always portal away to one of the Pirate's Life or Monkey Island Tale Tales and just sit there if you need to take a few minutes to do something IRL.

    I don't think they are going to remove the lazybeard timer ever, because idling costs them money to run the server you're on even if you're sitting in a isolated TT. Being able to do that for an infinite amount of time multiplied by potentially thousands of users who could be doing it becomes expensive real quick.

    Makes sense. I'm not asking for an AFK service so I can go to work and return 20 hours later, more like 30mins to an hour, so we can eat, sort out life stuff etc.
    Just a longer amount of time than the current lazy-beard, is where I'm suggesting.

  • @smuntface I agree. Doesn’t have to be crazy but it’s rough to get my dog downstairs, out to P, and back in without being worried about DC’ing.

    I’ve dc’d in shop menus, I’ve dc’d grabbing some food from the kitchen lol

  • This is a great idea. Lazy island is a new map with the same small island over and over again in a pond like sea. Could use an existing small island, remove the barrels and spawns or just make it a small round island with no features. Between all these islands is a red sea, so no interacting with anyone. This would mean you could run way more than 6 ships since there would be no other assets and minimal calculations to do. 30 min is enough to walk the dog, go to the loo or make a samwich and would cost less server time than someone setting up a macro.
