Revolutionizing the Multiplayer Experience: Ship Switching in the Tower of Sovereigns

  • Situation: Imagine the following situation that happens to me every day: I'm playing with friends, we form a brigantine, but one of them connects or disconnects. We need to switch to a galleon or sloop, and later another disconnects, which means abandoning the game and losing loot and emissary levels every time we do this. This frustration is common, and the experience becomes exhausting.
For me, it's the only thing I hate.

Proposal: Add a new feature in the Sovereign Tower or at the docks where players can easily switch between ships owned by themselves or their guild. When choosing a new ship, all emissary levels and progress would be preserved, allowing the group to quickly adapt to the dynamics of the game.

    Benefits:

    1. Group Flexibility: Players can switch from a brigantine to a galleon or sloop depending on the number of players available, without the frustration of losing what they have gained.

    2. Reduced Attrition: With less time spent abandoning games and starting over, the overall experience would be more enjoyable and engaging.

    3. Improved Strategy: Groups could adapt their tactics to the situation, making better use of the game's resources.

    4. Increased Social Engagement: It would encourage cooperation and the formation of guilds, strengthening the player community.

Conclusion: This addition could be a game-changer for the Sea of Thieves multiplayer experience, making the game more accessible and fun for everyone. What do you think? Let's join forces and bring this idea to Rare!

  • The main issue is the server cap. As far a I'm aware we're currently at a maximum of 6 ships - 18 players, unless it's been lowered again due to the current performance problems.

This means that you wouldn't be able to switch in the same server, especially if that current server was at max capacity as there isn't room for those additional players.

  • @wallyragex
    No.

It may cause issues with number of players on a server; if it's already at maximum capacity and a crew wants to go from sloop to galleon, the server might go more down than it already does - or - some crews might be able to switch to a bigger boat and others might not, which sounds unfair.

Possibility of - when on a server with all sloops, switching to a galleon might be considered unfairly.

Doing all kind of events, voyages &c, raising emissary easy on a sloop and then have your friends (or alts) profit.

Crews might have allianced with you, while they might not have wanted to alliance with a larger crew (if they might think a larger crew is more likely to betray the alliance).

It would probably make it easier to create a full-sized alliance server.

If a person shows up late (or later) and you all want to sail with them, they just have to wait until you finish the thing you're doing and sell the loot if the crew cares about that.

I realise, life gets in the way of playing games, but people just have to understand that SoT is a game with long sessions. If people regurlarly have to cut short a session, perhaps consider another game (or crew), get used to sail on an undermanned vessel for a bit or try to keep people in reserve. In combination with people showing up late to a session, instead of going from galleon to brig and then half an hour later to galleon again, you wouldn't need this kind of solution. You could do some other things that work great with smaller crews in the period when you're a person short.

  • @wallyragex changing to a bigger ship is all dependent on how many players/ship sizes on the server. If its full you can't upgrade from a sloop to a brig or galleon. No space

  • I would like something like this. Often a crew member is late or has to drop. Though I would perhaps force a dive to a new server to allow it. Keep supplies and emissary flag, but no loot can be taken. This would take care of any server size issues.

  • which means abandoning the game and losing loot and emissary levels every time we do this

Can’t lose it if you sell it first.

  • I would love a mechanic like this, I would probably say that it would need you to dive to a new server and leave any loot behind, but being able to change ships without logging out would be great.

    Solution 01: Player Capacity
If we keep the current limit of 6 ships per server, but increase the maximum player capacity to 24, this will allow for greater flexibility. This way, even if all ships switch to galleons (which hold 4 players each), the player limit will not be exceeded. This adjustment would ensure that ship switches can occur without negatively impacting gameplay, preserving the progression and experience of the group.

    Solution 02: Session Switching
Dynamic session switching: There is already a functionality that transfers players to new servers when a session is empty. By applying this to ship switching, when the number of crew exceeds the capacity, the game can quickly move the group to another server that can accommodate the new ship without losing progression.

When performing this session switch, the system must ensure that the emissary level is maintained.

  • @wallyragex SoT was designed for up to 6 ships and 24 players. However, this has been dropped to 18 players over the 6 ships due to server performance issues. I'm sure Rare would like to have it back up to 24 players - but server performance has to come first. So unfortunately, your Solution 01 isn't an option until they're able to address the performance issues.

Personally I don't think there is too much of an issue with starting a new session. If you buy Captaincy supplies, merchant supplies and empty the barrels from the outpost it provides a decent amount of supplies. A quick trip to a Sea Fort can be made if extra supplies are required.

It's pretty easy to get emissaries to Grade 5 and doesn't take a huge amount of effort or time.
