I would like to be able to invite my friends on the menu or in game each one with a ship, some people like me have more than 3 friends to play with.

Unfortunately, an idea like this leaves room to be abused by people who don't actually have a group of more than 3 friends, but instead strangers they've never met all for the purposes of making sessions a complete "safe-zone" which goes against the entirety of the game's vision and gameplay loop.
1 crew for 1 ship, 4 players max. Nothing can be done to amend this.
