Morrows Peak and Spawn Points

  • Is there a reason why we can't spawn at Morrows Peak? Seems like it is never going away, so might as well spawn there too. Just my 2 doubloons.

Better yet, I'd prefer to be able to pick my spawn point.

  • @rikjaxx Being in the Roar has always been voluntary since the difficulty is a little higher. One of my favorite zones.

  • @rikjaxx The Devil's Roar has always been designed and intended as an 'Opt In' area due to the added difficulty/danger of the volcanoes. I don't see it changing anytime soon.

As for choosing your own spawn points, I believe it is based on the proximity of nearby ships.

You could choose to spawn an island or two away from a previous foe with the ability to buy supplies etc and go back or choose to spawn at an outpost you know a ship was headed towards to cash in.

  • @triheadedmonkey To clarify what I mean - I'd like to choose my spawn point only when starting a new game. Then the system would use its own parameters and find a server for me.

  • I like the whole Opt-In option. I wanna opt-in from the get go...;-)

  • @rikjaxx but, again, the game chooses your starting spawn based on who else is where.

If everybody decided to choose New Golden Sands (for example) and the previous crew was still there grabbing supplies, buying cosmetics or just sat chatting, boats would spawn on top of boats...and it's not a fun time for anyone. (well except the one boat that doesn't sink 😄)

  • @triheadedmonkey Thus, I said "Then the system would use its own parameters and find a server for me."

  • @triheadedmonkey Good reasons to leave it as is.

  • Option to activate Morrow's Peak as a spawn from the pre-game settings. (Like xbox preferred).

Disable eruption for 5 minutes so you can spawn into it, then back to regular mechanics for the volcano activity there. I know at one point the volcano there was turned off all the way...

As much as I'd like to, no to initial spawn selection, just turn it on as an option you might end up at.

So now lets take that argument and picture a large amount of players choosing the same spawn point at or around the same time. Then you're stuck with having a bunch of server spin up to host one single ship just so each player gets their preferred choice of spawn point. Servers that may end up taking some time to fill depending on preference and amount of players/time of day.

  • @crowedhunter said in Morrows Peak and Spawn Points:

@xshirahx Maybe Rare could develop a way to merge servers.

They already have. Thing is, would you want to spawn in just to merge right as you leave the outpost, risking ending up two meters away from another ship because there was a reason you didn't spawn at that outpost in an already existing server in the first place? And how much time would you then set before triggering a merge? How long would that leave people alone in servers before merging rather than instantly merging with another server once the numbers go below a set amount? Things aren't quite as easy as they may seem at first glance.

  • @xshirahx I also think the odds of everyone hitting the same spawn point at the "same" time is slim to none. Even now I can usually get the spawn point I want in about 3 server hops and that's with randomness in play. I'm pretty sure this wouldn't be as disruptive as you imagine. So we'll agree to disagree.

  • @crowedhunter said in Morrows Peak and Spawn Points:

@xshirahx Maybe Rare could use the same logic they use to pick an outpost as a rule of thumb. I'm just spitballing here.

I may not know everything, but I'd like to. So I appreciate your patience in the meantime.

The one thing I could imagine would be a possibility is to be able to choose a preferred spawning point but that the choice would not be guaranteed. As in, if possible/available, you'd spawn in at your location of choice, if not it would be whatever is open/free at the time. But I have to say, that feels like a lot of work for something that won't really make much difference for most players.

  • @crowedhunter Totally agree. It's a disappointment when you are feeling Devils Roar only to spawn in Sanctuary.

  • Is there a reason why we can't spawn at Morrows Peak?

Wasn’t it because of the volcanos might hit your ship or something. I don’t remember really and some people rather not.

  • I could see one issue when introducing the option to pick where you spawn. When we have adventures that need to be started at a specific outpost(like the last 2) then on the first few days of release everyone will be selecting that outpost for their spawn location and it will cause some issues.

I do think it would be cool to set a preference though. Maybe select an area for spawning, not just a specific outpost. Or have a “select preferred but you might not receive it if it is unavailable” type thing. It may be more complicated to code than we think, or it may be super easy. There’s gotta be a reason it hasn’t made it into the game yet as it definitively isn’t a new suggestion.

I also am the type to just leave and join servers over and over until I get the outpost I want. So like on those adventure days I just left and joined until I got Plunder Outpost. Currently if I need to go to Morrow’s then I try for Ancient Spire.

@rikjaxx This is something else I was going to bring up about this topic. Some non-zero amount of us absolutely will sit there for an extra 10 minutes to save on 15 minutes of redundant sailing. I can smoke or something while I'm searching.

I think ultimately what this issue is gonna come down to is if it's literally worth doing.

I guess the question is what the non-zero amount is and how much that number would go up if things were changed. Like, when an adventure is at a certain outpost I'll drop out and in until I spawn there because yes, its more time efficient than sailing over there but usually I wouldn't bother. But if there was an option to pick, I'd pick every time, just because. Added to that, I would imagine that a number of people who never normally bother would pick just because. I'd be willing to bet that in non-adventure period you'd probably go from a tiny percentage of people hopping until they find a preferred spawn point to almost everyone making a pick. Then its either wait times, or you get your preference if we can but not if we can't, and basically that means you can't, and everyone coming on the forum complaining about either issue.

  • I would be for a system that:

    1. Allowed for you to opt in to spawning at Marrows
    2. Allowed you to set your preferred spawn point when you launch the game (like the "select your captained ship" screen)

The game would attempt to put you in a server that matched your spawn point and if not maybe the next closest thing. I don't have a lot of time to play, and sometimes when trying to accomplish one of the Adventures I spawn on the other side of the map and either have to try scuttling to get closer, launching a new server to hope to be closer, or spending a goo portion of my allotted time to play sailing across the map to get to where a key part of the Adventure is.

I'm not sure I see any downside for it, except potentially adding code to do this to their primordial monstrosity that is the Sea of Thieves code would cause more crashes or longer black screens or my ship to be perpetually on fire. Who knows?

  • I like the current system as is. It seems like the ideas presented here begin to get overly complex for a marginal gain. It does not take long to get to the Roar from Sanctuary. In the meantime you can always fire yourself over to forts, seaposts, and islands along the way to gather extra planks and food. You’ll probably want the extra supplies out there.

  • @ghostpaw Agreed, also because the missions pay more we could end up with people hopping until they get MP. If they are going to make MP just another spawn point they might need to nerf the payout.

  • @pithyrumble "Disable eruption for 5 minutes so you can spawn into it"

Then they definitely need to nerf the payout on the missions. This defeats the whole point.

  • @crowedhunter said in Morrows Peak and Spawn Points:

I wanna call that a slippery slope but it's so believable lol. There could be an option to cancel matchmaking like how hourglass has in the event that someone is tired of waiting for their outpost. And honestly, if someone came onto forums complaining about how it took too long to join the outpost that they wanted, forum would tear. them. up

The thing is its all part of how you colour the first experience of the game. New player picks up the game, chooses Golden Sands because it sounds nice, has a ten minute wait to find a server and ends up not getting where they asked for, and that's all they know the game to be, its a pretty poor first touch. Also, you might say the forums would rip them up, but their point would be "A feature was introduced to do something, and it took ages, then didn't work", they'd have a fair position.

  • @pithyrumble a dit dans Morrows Peak and Spawn Points :

Disable eruption for 5 minutes so you can spawn into it, then back to regular mechanics for the volcano activity there. I know at one point the volcano there was turned off all the way...

The volcano in Morrow's Peak is still sleeping. It never erupts. They never changed that back.

When there was only 5 spots for HG invasions and 1 out of 2 times you got North off Morrow's, i used to go there to AFK after fights. Noone ever goes there so it's safe as hell.

  • @jolly-ol-yep

    Oh well them. Even easier.

@Foambreaker hopping to start at MP won't be any worse than hopping for events or reaper dodging.

On a separate note... would they add another arch for Pirate's Life?

  • I'd definitely like the option to opt into spawning at morrow's
