Questing in the normal mode is basically a complete nuisance now (AI spawn rate)

  • Since the recent update where new enemy types got added, me and my friends noticed it became extremely annoying to try to follow a questline (if you're not very experienced? Or just if you're playing the story for the first time). If we need to read four new pages of a book to progress on a quest, then follow specific 5 step instructions to find something on the island and then bring it safely to the ship, we usually encounter enough enemy spawns to have around 10 of those new "soul stones" by the end of one story step.

It seems like the skeleton spawns weren't changed but phantoms and the new crab things spawn as frequent as skeletons (on top of the usual "spawning queue"), without sharing a spawn cooldown overall.

Today, we got into a fight with a miniboss (the slightly healthier skeletons with dialogue) and as soon as the fight started, there was an abundance of enemies that spawned randomly alongside the "bodyguard" skeletons of the boss. Those were (counting from a replay I recorded): 2 of the big crab things, 2 of the small crab things, 3 phantoms, all at once. Plus the few crab things that spawned inside the mountain (which they seem to do a lot by the way; they get stuck there and annoy us with their way too loud idle sounds. Sometimes they can attack through the ground/wall.) In the spawn wave before that there were 2 small crab things and that new electrocuting enemy, alongside the miniboss and their bodyguards. Time between those two spawn waves was basically nonexistent. I just had enough time to respawn a teammate after the first wave when the second one began.

Today, we also lost 2 whole hours of quest progress as we tried to understand the quest puzzles for a long time while being barraged by annoying stuff just to lose everything we gathered to some reaper lvl. 5 players, just to be reset back to where we started our play session 2 hours earlier. No story checkpoint reached.

Today, I kinda lost interest in playing the story (which is my main drive in SoT currently) because I can neither follow it nor immerse myself into this world some great people crafted.

  • You mean the Tall Tale with the Skellies sitting around a Campfire huh?
Well that is a shame. I remember that part since it felt so interesting to see Skellies speak.
When the first Tall Tales came into the game, it wasn't as AI crowded as it is now.

But in general Rare has increased the Skeletons actions/reaction times over time I feel.
For example I remember times when you could board a Skeleton ship too and move relatively safely around it.
The AI just was not able to have the Skellies surround & attack you so fast.

It was also much easier to stop Skeletons on a Skellie-Galleon to repair holes.
Nowadays you have to be on board already before a Crewmate shoots holes into their Gally.
Or you won't be able to run to the holes quick enough to defend them.

It is so annoying to see Skeletons react like relatively experienced players now.
I liked their lack of "fast reflexes" more and felt it was immersive.
Since they are dead and maybe even their perception is rotten due to that.
    .

Yeah pray this topic gets more attention.

  • Maybe we need adventure mode non PvE servers. This way we dont have to play with a bunch of computer generated griefers.

  • @combatxkitty Actually, I like that you can play the new game mode without other players so at least one of our problems of yesterday is gone but that still leaves us with the problem that we can't follow the story as well as we wanted.

Ok here are two points you've made. (And yes, I'm talking about the Tall Tale.)

    • Enemies became more frequent. I think this is the bigger problem here as it's not really important how hard each fight is; if you're constantly having to fight it's just annoying if you want to follow a quest.
    • Enemies became more intelligent. This is actually a thing I quite like. I get your criticism with skeletons on skeleton ships being really powerful but you have to keep in mind that there are many enemies on an enemy ship and you're alone. It's bound to be difficult. Maybe they shouldn't respawn as frequent if at all (but be even more deadly?). This way you can shoot a few cannon shots on deck and then get onto the enemy ship as there's barely an enemy left. I love the intelligence skeletons and AI enemies show when they're by themselves. It's a welcome challenge for me. It's just annoying if there's like 20 of them at the same time.
  • Ocean crawlers and phantoms are new. Thus they want everyone to encounter them. Even if not doing tall tales.

By half way or end of this season they may change the rate of spawning. (Maybe sooner)

Atm the focus is the new stuff.

This is almost exactly what i was about to reply with.

Yeah I know. My point is that new stuff is only exciting if you don't choke players with it. I love all the new enemies but I'd have MUCH more fun with the changes if they wouldn't be all over the place.

  • Would like to just agree with spawn rate of new mobs - I would hope it's just flooding the game with them atm so everyone can see them, but I have had two sessions now where I got frustrated with constant spawns stopping us from doing a basic three/four chest-finding map.

  • The spawn rate for the new critters is astonishing.
I anchored at one of those islands that are not much more than a sandbar just as the sun was rising.
I started fighting them and I fought throughout the day, through the night and well into the next day.
I had gone through all the supplies on the island and left when I ran out of food and cannonball.
The respawn rate was constant. They just kept coming.
Now while I was enjoying myself, I can see how this would make a quest nearly impossible to enjoy.

Yeah but a chest-finding map is even less of a problem because you don't need to spend much time just staying around, reading/understanding stuff. (if you're talking about the type of maps I think you do)
If even chest-finding maps are annoying to complete, imagine how hard the story is. :/

Yeah but now imagine you want to do some quick task on a few more islands, even if you're not following some deep quest or something. Even if your mission is just some bounty hunting, I think you'll soon get either bored or annoyed by the mass of enemies spawning. Even if you just do the same thing you described in your message multiple times it's probably boring after some time. Just like grinding in any MMO of your choice; less engaging though as there is no such thing as legendary weapon drops or something. ^^'

  • @panossa I completely agree. I stopped off for supplies at another island and had to fight my way back out using up most of the fruit I had just obtained.
The skeletons were never an issue when quickly restocking, but these things are a bit much.

ok yeah but i have to nitpick it's called voyaging not "questing"

Hm, I don't see it. Neither why it would be important here nor what the difference is. I mean, a voyage is a series of quests(or "missions", which is the same). The process of finishing quests is also called questing. ¯\(ツ)

  • I find it refreshing.
Once I was disappointed when I made landfall on a small island expecting a fight, and nothing was spawning.
Maybe you need a voyage on the island.

The Devil's Roar was hellacious with the heat seeking volcanic boulders, earthquakes, and geysers during Forsaken Shores.
Experience tells me the spawn rate will decline after the seasons end.

Well, this just means for us that we can only continue playing at the end of the season. Our main drive right now are the quests and they are barely possible to follow right now. :/

  • @panossa

Perhaps Rare will alter the spawn rate before the end of the season.

You could also just quest in the Devils Roar and use the geysers to your advantage.

    Grab a rowboat.

Well, we're doing the Tall Tale so we get what we get. :/
But yeah, I'll just keep myself up to date on the patch notes of the upcoming updates so I'll know when they fix this issue. If at all.

  • @panossa I suspect the current spawn rate is to ramp up excitement for the PotC update. It will get cut back after all the hoopla is over. Until then, it will be a challenge to get things done.

If you are referring to the Pirates of the Caribbean content, it is NOT a new game mode....it is a new Tall Tale which have been in existence for a while. You can still be attacked by other players doing the story chapters, as only the 1st and 3rd are instanced away from the general world - any other chapter of the story you can be disrupted by other players as well as any NPC threats. Just thought I'd inform you of that before you start feeling too safe and then get wrecked by other players doing their own thing.

Selecting A Pirate's Life in the menu does not put you in a separate server, it just places you at an outpost in front of the Outcasts hut to start it. You are still in the same general servers as everyone else, that is until you start either the 1st or 3rd chapter of the tale and go through the portal.

  • I actually like the spawn rate of the Sirens. When looting a sunken ship, it adds some excitement and intensity to an otherwise rote procedure. It also makes boarding / key play slightly more difficult in naval combat, so I'm sure that there are people who would benefit or appreciate that.

With regards to the other enemy types, I think that Rare should begin to include more reward for defeating them, or defeating them within a certain amount of time. When a large amount of them spawn at a time, it can be an involved and time consuming process to dispatch them safely, but there is no real reward for it, so often the best option is to flee

-- I don't really PvE so I don't have a reason to stick around digging up chests and so on.

However, if I knew they would drop supplies or semi-rare loot to raise my emissary grade I would take up the challenge.

    1. I actually wasn't talking about the Sirens but I think for questing they're still a bit too much. But not THAT much.

    2. I mean, they do drop the soul gems or whatever which are okay in price. Especially the biggest new enemy is good for that. It's like 6-7 hits with a sword and you get a soul ruby. However, if you actually follow questlines you don't want to divert your focus so often.

  • @panossa

If we need to read four new pages of a book to progress on a quest

Always do this on or near the ship to look out for other players. Also helps to read maps and books before setting foot on the island to avoid spanws from starting.

Yeah but then you have a book that's like "go here on this island", you go there and it says "now go here" etc. Sometimes you need to visit like 3-4 different locations on the same island while constantly being bothered by AI.
