Ghosting and Choppiness on Stream

  • I have a bit of a unique issue that I've had a really hard time researching and I'm at a bit of a loss as to what causes the issue, and how to fix it.

That clip shows what essentially happens. That's using quadruple buffering, and swapping to triple, or double buffering makes the issue even worse. The game looks completely smooth on my gaming computer, and only shows up choppy like that on my stream.

I use a two PC streaming setup, and I have a 1440p 144hz monitor. My capture card is external and hooks up to my streaming PC and is 1080p 60hz. I forcefully scale the capture card to 1080p 60hz and duplicate my 1440p monitor using the GeForce control panel. It works perfectly fine for literally every other game, and eventually I'll fiddle with Sea of Thieves enough to where it will finally smooth out, but I have no idea what causes it to "fix" itself. Updating my graphics drivers always seems to "reset" it and I'll have to try and "fix" it again.

I know this is a huge shot in the dark, but if anyone has any insight or ideas on what I can try, I'm all ears. Initially I had a 4K capture card from AverMedia but it bricked and I got a replacement from AverMedia, which also bricked. So now I'm using an Elgato HD60S+ which has been working fine with the exception of Sea of Thieves.

    EDIT:

Sincerely doubt anyone is having a similar issue, but just in case anyone is... I fixed it.

It was related to vsync. I use fast sync in the GeForce control panel for everything since it's a set-and-forget vsync setting that reduces tearing and doesn't neuter my framerate. But apparently Sea of Thieves does not like that setting with my streaming setup.

So, telling Sea of Thieves to run at a fixed refresh rate and allowing the application to control it instead of GeForce solves the issue.

    Hopefully this helps someone.
