  • Blame Xbox parties. Not only are they a massive security vulnerability (it's extremely easy to pull someone's IP and DDoS them if you're in an Xbox party with them), but Xbox players can't hear you if they're in one. On PC at least you can still hear game chat if you're in an Xbox party, though nearly every PC user uses Discord instead because it's 100x better than Xbox party will ever be.

  • @comrade-molly

God. People actually DDos over a video game?

That takes pettiness to a whole new level.

DDoSing and Doxing are shockingly common in the Xbox ecosystem. NEVER join an Xbox party without a VPN.

  • @comrade-molly Thanks. I'll bear that in mind.

  • Everyone and anyone that complains of Toxicity...the one common denominator to their horror stories is Game Chat.

I only use party chat and have never encountered the Toxicity I see reported here on a daily basis.

  • @Comrade-Molly
Been using Xbox parties since they were a thing, and so do my kids, and all of our friends. Never once had cause for concern about any security issues. Never known anyone to have cause for concern, also never once seen an article regarding any concerns on this.

Not sure if it's already the case, but this problem will get fixed soon...saw a news the other day, I guess it's called peer to peer connection, right? They get rid of it, so DDoS can't happen that way anymore...
Anyway...party chat is good, better than ingame chat, and both better than PS-chat/partychat

There is a security problem with parties, because of peer to peer connection...this way hackers can find out your IP so they can DDos you...but MS is about to get rid of this

If you're only joining trusted parties and casual players it's not usually an issue, but when you start talking about the competitive scene in most Xbox games or the "4 character gamertag" crowd, there's always some bad eggs. It's common in CoD and it's growing more common in SoT.

  • @comrade-molly

Didn't know anything about this, have read up a little now, and it seems a fix is on it's way.. I would have zero idea how it was even possible to launch a DDOS attack from an Xbox console to begin with.. Glad i play with just people i know, and we always have invite only parties.

It's not done from the console; you can use xbox party on PC as well. With some simple tools, it is easy to pull IP's from xbox party on PC, and there's loads of free DDoS tools on the internet.

Thankfully, apparently Microsoft is FINALLY fixing this it seems, but we'll see if they actually fix it properly or not...

Oh! More joyous side effects from cross play then.. Why does that not surprise me.
Glad it's an optional choice these days :)

  • There have been a few hints lately towards Xbox/Discord integration. Would be a great feature for cross-platform communications.

You're kidding yourself if your think that playing on Xbox only servers would prevent this from happening. They can still get that information using their PC, they don't have to be playing the game on it at the same time. People do own both you know.

  • @dlchief58

You're right. Having access to the Xbox eco system with a PC was always a stupid idea, glad you acknowledge this finally.

It has nothing to do with having access to the XBox ecosystem. Even if PCs were not able to play Sea of Thieves at all, they can still pull IP information from incoming connections through the router because the XBox party system uses peer to peer connections. You can access this by using your mobile phone browser even.

At least know what you are talking about before trying to twist every argument into an anti-PC rant.

  • @comrade-molly same most are full of seaweed if they claim they ddos. I haven't had it happen Since the 360. Also if they do try a firewall will ruin their day

  • Of course gamechat leaves a big door open toward toxic comments , i won't deny that but...Not everybody uses Gamechat to ruin someone's selfconfidence... Back in the day , when i was searching on islands i could suddenly hear voices , voices far away as the Proximity Chat works perfectly into adding thrills and yes ,even fears... Man , in those days even one simple Merauder's Chest was something worthy to fight for or run a whole island in the hope to not be detected ... In my case , i hid in the bushes and in those days there weren't hiding emotes , and prayed they wouldn't find me , as i didn't want to lose this treause , i just had dug , for my crew... i also couldn't shout nor say there were Pirates on the island , so my crew ,unaware was chatting away...Literally sweat pearled on my forehead when the other Pirates passed by my bushes . They didn't noticed me , and i took a long run around the island to reach and warn our crew...

Those are things that don't happen anymore...

Another thing i find a bit gamebreaking is the fact that they can hear you but won't speak to you , this way it is very hard to run a ship because some type back , other's won't , but typing is also slow and mostly too late . The last thing that bugs me is that you never get the true Personality of someone that doesn't talk and it also feels a bit ackward that one always talks while the others are silent as a grave...

When it comes to enemies , well , anyone can turn their Hearts into a stone and throw out angriness or , and that's what i like to do, as i mostly lose i still like to keep a big mouth in a fun way but when they kill me blame something like loose shoelaces or " otherwise i would have hanged them by the eartips in the saillines " ... Sadly that doesn't happens much anymore because i don't like to talk to silent walls...

So i would like that Rare would find a way to encourage Gamechat again because Gamechat and Proximitychat DO add to the atmosphere of this game...

Big sidenote , i do understand and respect People who have had enough verbal slaps around the ears and don't trust to speak towards randoms or strangers because for far too long has these things being treated lenient or untreated at all ,which has led that Partychat and Discord or other channels have taken over Gamechat.

LOL, I acknowledge only that you lack knowledge/education on the situation only as you've shown with this response. Stop trying to turn everything into an anti-PC/cross-play rant, especially when the conversation is completely unrelated.

  • @dlchief58

Your right.. I have a complete lack of knowledge and understanding of how to try to ruin another persons gaming experiences by either, attacking their hardware, exploiting or even simply cheating.. It's good so many of you are quickly able to help fill me in with the details. What would i do without you all?

Ps: The conversation started to take on this topic of the simplicity of attacking using DDOS from the second reply.. I didn't start this off.

    It started here:

Glad it's an optional choice these days :)

DOS attacks on XBox have been occurring since consoles could connect to the internet and have nothing to do with crossplay or "access to the XBox ecosystem" and yet you immediately steer the conversation in that direction.

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they say this was coming at one point?

But you did start to turn the conversation into an anti-PC/cross-play rant with your ignorant remark - and now trying to paint me as some supporter of such actions with your passive aggressive response. FYI I play the game on Xbox and not PC, but do play in the real servers instead of the segregated, low skill ones.

A game being on a console and in a closed network such as Live does NOT prevent DDOS attacks, hackers, or cheaters. The history of Call of Duty online should be enough to tell you that (GTA IV as well).

  • @clumsy-george

This be exactly what we're missing.

Yes, there shalt always be the odd bell-enders, have to say that toxicity increased when the likes of summit was plying his murky trade.

But the game was special because of the friendships made on the ocean. With folk sitting in their party bubbles, the babble has died.

If people don'ts want to talk, that's their choice, but an ocean devoid of jibber jabber is no ocean at all.

  • If xbox players could hear game chat while they're in a party like PC players can, then this would go a long way to fixing this issue IMO. As it is you don't know whether a player can hear you in game chat or not.
