Some Thoughts on Custom Servers

  • So, Custom Servers are coming. The official announcement is here: https://www.seaofthieves.com/news/custom-servers-update and Captain Falcore discusses them in his latest YouTube video, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3CcU8-3Rac

These will NOT be PvE-only servers. Gold and progression may not be earned. This post is not an argument for that, and please do not turn this thread into a discussion about PvE-only servers. I simply want to make some requests about the features I would like to see in a Custom Server.

My interest in Custom Servers is using them for content creation: exploring, mapping, photography (screen shots), and machinima (movie making on the Sea of Thieves). We are told there will be the ability to customise "ship numbers and types prior to starting" but "no gold or reputation progression from Custom Server sessions". I am cool with that. But, I would like to see much more control.

    REQUIRED FEATURES

    • All voyage types, including all Tall Tales, should remain. This would allow content creators like me to provide things like my Riddle Guide or machinima makers to make movies of pirates doing a Tall Tale.
    • Pirates enter a session with all the cosmetics or equipment they have earned in the real world, but no real gold. Instead every player enters the session with enough "fake" gold to buy the quests, costumes and props they may need for the session.
    • It should even be possible to hand in a chest to the Gold Hoarders, or a skull to the OOS, etc. Just do not allow the gold to be kept beyond the current session.

    SESSION CONFIGURATION

Session creators should be able to set the following features as they configure the server:

    • Turn on or off world events, such as Skull Forts, appearances of the Megalodon, Flameheart's ghost fleet, the Kraken, etc. There should be individual controls for each such event.
    • Control the frequency of island skellies: from "Never" to "Annoyingly Constant"
    • Control whether Storms and Fog appear.

    IN-SESSION "CHEATS"

In addition to configuration of the server before the session begins, it would be cool to be allow the server controller to tweak stuff during the session:

    • Control the weather. Turn Storm or Fog on (centred on a location), or off; and set the direction of the wind!
    • Control the time of day, and perhaps allow the ability to "stop time" (providing consistent light for photos or machinima).
    • Trigger an PvE event: ranging from the popping up of an island skelly, to the appearance of Flameheart and his squadrons of ships on a chosen island.
    • The only PvE event that should NOT be allowed is triggering the Shrouded Ghost. We don't want YouTube filled with videos of people "defeating" this mythical beast.
    • Ability to toggle off and on name plates above players.

    PRICING

If we could have all this, I would pay good money for a Custom Server. Which brings me to pricing. I imagine a subscription style pricing model, which allows an individual to set up a Custom Server any number of times in a month. If the server was wanted permanently, the subscription price would be paid each month. I imagine something like $10 USD or €10 per month to be about right. For me that would be about $15 AUD.

  • ability to turn off names above players heads would be nice as well those that are in your crew and those that aren't, some friends and i want to make some goofy roleplaying videos with this and I agree with everything you've suggested. it would also be nice if they had an option for monthly payments or one yearly payment.

  • @surveyorpete I want Duke to carry all of his previous voyages, to add for more variety of missions on the servers. We should get a true sandbox if we're paying. Gilded Voyages for crazy amounts of loot, Dark Relic runs just to see the models again, Gunpowder stashes for explosive fun, etc.

I'd like special "Creative Tools" that could be accessed via the Map wheel, and can be given as priveleges by the host. Such as:

A Gunpowder Barrel with an adjustable fuse, to act as a kind of time bomb or alarm/timer.

A Magic Compass that changes wind/wave direction as needed for events.

A Magic Map that can be used to plot the course of a storm/fog/trigger volcanoes

An all-purpose reuseable Key that can be used on ashen chests + Tall Tale doors and such, to expedite certain things, ex. skipping the Shores of Gold vaults.

A Crate with infinite supplies and foods of all types that can be drained and put into ships barrels as the user sees fit.

A Magic Portal that can produce a desired loot item.

These types of items will help SO much with setting up custom activities. I'd love it.
Need tons of supplies for an alliance war? Infinite Crate.
Need a cool looking item for Capture the Flag? Portal, get whatever you'd like.
Wanna fight the Gold Hoarder, but not his traps or puzzles? Key.

    Just some thoughts.

  • The door is unlocked - all it needs is for someone to open it.

  • @galactic-geek Huh?

  • @surveyorpete

I think you will be disappointed, you've basically nearly asked for a PvE server and potentially opened a worm can. There can be no tall tales, no cashing in chests (even pretend). It's for races, party's, get-togethers and events etc.. You'll probably just have to continue to create some content on the regular mode. Good idea though.

I suppose I have. But, I suspect, if there are no rewards (gold, XP or commendations) that can earned and carried forward; very few people will want to grind GH, MA or OOS quests, or spend their time catching 100s of splashtails, just for the fun of doing so without fear of piracy. However: If some people are prepared to pay for a private server to do just that, why not let them?

There can be no tall tales, no cashing in chests (even pretend). It's for races, party's, get-togethers and events etc.

But, what if the event someone wants to run is PvE focused? If could be, for example, a race to complete a full Athena quest in the shortest possible time, with all ships starting the Sea Dog's tavern, and the first to return with their Athena chest declared the winner. This could be in the context of having all non-quest related, "emergent" PvE threats disabled: Meg, Kraken, Skeleton ships, etc.

The richer the set of tools and toys we have to play with, the more creative people can be with custom servers.

  • @wagstr I have a feeling that quests and tall tales will still be in the custom servers, along with cashing in items but no gold or rep will be earned.

  • @surveyorpete

I agree with all that, however, it's so close to a PvE server that people will hound them mercilessly...

  • @wagstr Btw i dont think he is asking for them i think he is giving feedback on them as they are an announced feature coming to the sea of thieves.

  • @surveyorpete I'm quite interested in this. I have a vague notion of using SoT as the basis for a Youtube series but it's not really viable to set up recording sessions in the live game. Private servers would be perfect. For me the main things would be free access to all of the cosmetics, emotes and an ability for people to freely change body types so that we could get the 'actors' in character for each session. Being able to spawn the storm on command and also some of the megs/kraken would also be quite helpful.

I might try a music video first once private servers are in testing. If I find the time I might put out a call (either in Creator crew or insiders) for actors/camera people.

Overall I think this will be a real boon for creators and people who run events.

  • I like the idea of these custom servers, you do need to be able to cash in chests otherwise it limits the number and types of events you can run. How do you keep score without it? You should not be able to keep the gold.

The crew running the server should be able to vote to reset the 'score'.
They should able be able to gift things to players (cosmetics, gold, doubloons, chests etc) Thousand Grogs race across Wanderers Refuge(end to end) anyone?

I like the idea of being able to control the weather, time of day, hostile wildlife.
I also read somewhere that the sea level was determined by a variable, please give us control of that.
