The discussion of limited time cosmetics... again - Caring for the value of limited objects.

  • Anniversary Events - Some previous cosmetics from past events will be earnable again!

This was a discussion that happened a long time ago and the decision was to launch recolors of some cosmetics, now we return to the same thing.
This is not about feeling important, it is about caring for the game (based on cosmetics) and valuing the fidelity of the player.

The only way for someone to see you and know that you are an experienced player, who dedicated time to the game, that he sees the importance of playing each update ... is to see that you have exclusive X event clothing, THE ONLY ONE WAY.

So what is the value of playing update after update to unlock those unique cosmetics, if I can come in a few months later and get hold of them, even more easily?
I don't know, it seems to me one more step towards the devaluation of the game and its users.

    Cheers!

  • I love spotting the limited cosmetics on ships, or players, from certain events and periods of the game. I do hope they are not planning to ruin this. For example, when I see the Bone Crusher hull, I know, whoever put that on the ship, was here during the event. It adds a historical context to the potential experience of the pirates we encounter - and it's something I, too, greatly value.

Hopefully they've got the right plans in mind.

No it's not. It's about being special. It's about "I have this thing and you can't get it." Time limited cosmetics only say that you logged in at that time. Says nothing about experience(which is hilarious to me "look at all this experience im wearing" lol
If it was about "caring for the game... and players" you would care about how many cosmetics Rare is dumping in the emporium. Charging the full price of the game for one ship set... A lot of the best cosmetics in a game based entirely on cosmetic progression are locked behind a paywall and can't be gotten by playing the game...

Sorry, but I don't buy it..

The problem or not problem of the Emporium is another completely different matter.

Sorry, but it was not just logging in, you had to complete several commendations, you had to complete several commendation.
Yes, it is also about feeling special, showing from when you play SoT, the experience of each event, that is not something that should be bought.

  • Hungering Deep: You had to defeat the Meg for the special figurehead. Back then the Meg was much bigger and harder to defeat.

Cursed Sails: You had to take on specific fleets on certain IRL times.

Forsaken Shores: You had to discover every island in the Roar (not time limited) but the rewards were time limited.

Wrong. You had to go out and do things not just log in for the first 3 major events. And it does say something about experience. If you see someone with the Hungering Deep stuff you know they've been there since the start. If you see someone with the Cursed Sails stuff you know that they were there at that time experimenting with alliances and new threats. If you see someone with the Forsaken Ashes stuff you know that they were the pioneers of exploring the Roar (back when the volcanoes were actually a threat)

  • @mferr11 I disagree, but I don't care enough to explain why.

Time does not equal experience. Someone having a fancy old cosmetic that was time exclusive from early days of a game isn't guaranteed to be an experienced player. All that says to me is that you are an old player and nothing more.

Experience and skill is something that can only be shown in combat and gameplay, not paraded like a cosmetic. For all I know, this pirate with 3,000+ hours and having the oldest cosmetic in the game could be one of the worse players in the game who simply just never cared to get better.

I've flat-out massacre players wearing these old cosmetics or hard to get cosmetics easily and I just started playing this game in Jan, 2020... By your logic here, that shouldn't be a thing.

Which is why I am pointing it out as heavily flawed logic and just an excuse to want to keep old cosmetics exclusive. Personally, I don't care. The only old cosmetic I want is the megalodon figurehead but that's not a big deal to me. Cosmetics are cosmetics and personally, I rather not have time limited cosmetics at all but not much one can do about that and thus I don't care.

What I do care about is attitudes like this where it's like a huge deal to have these cosmetics... It's not. They're just fancy clothing and ship paints. Nothing more, nothing less. They don't show off skill. They don't show off experience. They don't show time spent in the game, usually. They just show off that you did something and got on the game in a very specific date.

If you want to prove that you're good at a game to me, then prove it. Fight me head on or show me some video of you doing something really impressive. Cosmetics means nothing to me in this regard and always will.

I agree with this statement, which is why I'm happy that these old cosmetics aren't being brought back to be put on sale but being brought back with their respective events so that newer players can have the same experience as you older players did.

This is a win win situation in my eyes because it means those awesome experiences you had back then can be re-experienced by you and also experienced by newer players who didn't got a chance to enjoy them, with the same chance of getting some (not all) of the old cosmetics.

  • @mferr11 that's what i mean!
