Character creation experience - Let us create our own character

  • Oh hai there!

I'm new to this game and I'm aware that this have been brought up before. But I thought I might as well give my feedback and thoughts on the character creation from the point of view of a new player.

Generating random pirates to choose from is a very bad idea.
I'm one of those people who actually enjoy creating and customizing my own character, I can spend hours in the character window.
I'm not alone in this, many people who I speak to also enjoy customizing their own characters.

But instead with Sea of Thieves we only get to randomly generate pirates and maybe, MAYBE, find a pirate that we are somewhat happy with.
My first experience was that I spent 1 hour randomly generating pirates before I found one that I was somewhat happy with. Which later on looked very different once I was in the game.
I later spent many more hours trying to find a new pirate that I would be happy with. In the end I ended up with a pirate that, you guessed it, that I was somewhat happy with.
This gives a terrible first impression of the game.

What was their reason for this? It takes longer to create a character and none is really happy with the end result.

Letting the players create and customize their own character should be the Number One focuses of 2020 Q1-Q2.
They should also give every player a free pass to recreate their character, if they decide to release a proper character creation system, without loosing progress of course.
Introducing character slots would also be a good idea to implement along with a proper character creation system.

Other than the terrible character creation in this game I do however enjoy the gameplay of the game.

Thanks for reading and have a mighty fine day!
Let us hope that the Devs will focus on this or else the plank it is!

  • Pirates weren't meant to be beautiful or exquisite - they're scarred, misshapen, ugly things. Rare was smart enough to know that if they had a detailed pirate editor, many of them wouldn't even look like pirates - they'd look like supermodels. This is their way of forcing you into #bemorepirate.

Of course, you can still come up with a decent look, but it might take some time - 3 hours in my case.

    Cheers! 😁

  • @naywen1846 Whilst I can somewhat understand your frustration, player customisation should be so far down the list of priorities for Rare and to say it should be the main focus for 2020 Q1 - Q2 is out right ridiculous.

I can go whole sessions without seeing my character at all due the the first person perspective of the game.

  • The randomly generated pirates with no way of adjusting them is probably the innovation of the year. I love this feature and it should never be changed.

  • I've often found myself wondering about the same thing, as I spent waaaaay too much time trying to get the pirate I got XD

However, I can agree with @Galactic-Geek. While though the process of character creation is a tad tedious, in the end, it can totally be worth it.

When I first started playing, I deleted my pirate three or four times right off the bat because I just didn't like the way he turned out after a few sessions of playing. I was disappointed at having to recreate my character in the same fashion, each time seemingly lasting longer on the character selection screen.

But alas! My perfect pirate visage was finally found! A natural ginger, just like yours truly, as well as a dead right eye with some missing teeth.

The dead eye just gives me actual reason to use they eyepatches, which is a great detail if you ask me. And the teeth? Well, it probably wouldn't have been my first choice, but it does certainly make him appear more pirate-y!

All in all, the character creation isn't perfect, but it's still really effective given the time to generate the guy or gal you're looking for. Plus the favorites feature included really helps when trying to narrow down that perfect pirate.

At the end of it, it would be a cool idea to implement some new character creation features, however, I feel it wouldn't be doing any more favors than the current creation process can't.

  • this would be a great addition! i personally hate the look of my character and always have really. I would love to add some uniqueness to my character

  • @naywen1846

I agree that my initial pirate creation was clunky lol I'm a first year legend and I remember having an entire wheel of random pirates going 🤔🤔 hmm...maybe that one? Nahhh... I swore up and down I wanted to build my own character.

While I do agree it wouldnt be a bad idea I think I'm leaning more on the side of leaving the pirate wheel...but allowing you the chance to reroll somehow. I personally have a skinny male so he is good for what I use him for, he tucks easy, hes hard to see. But others dont like theirs..they are fat and cant hide, they look like an old lady and they want a younger looking one etc. I think a one time or emporium based reroll would be nice.

Rare has a lot on their plate all at once and they do an amazing job keeping us updated and pushing out updates. I would rather they keep pushing forward and adding content...or stopping and perfecting the game then backpedaling and reworking a system that is in place and works.

I get it's out of place in a world where every game you can customize. But like one of the other comments said it's a pirate game, your not supposed to be pretty..your supposed to look like trash lol

  • Rare have a few times explained why they do it like this, why it's so limited - it's so the game isn't filled with characters that don't fit in, or are all the same perfect people. The randomness adds more to the game and I think most people get attached to their pirate over time regardless of how imperfect they are.

Do I think improvements could be made? Sure, I even recently suggested a couple of things that would help alleviate frustration, rein in the randomness a bit, but also keep that basic element of randomness and variety in the world.

I wouldn't add a detailed character creator, but I am in favour of the ability to reroll the character if you wish without resetting progress... as long as there are limits to this (such as it costing X amount of gold and maybe limited to once a month).

  • Ok, so I have to admit that many of the comments here make sense in many ways.
And now on second thoughts, maybe letting us customize our own pirates might be a bad idea after all.

But they could make a bridge between the two, by adding two things.

    1: Add more character slots
2: Let us save the "favorites" for later use when creating a character.

That way we can go back and randomize as much as we want without having to choose right away.

  • I think it's an interesting way to make the Sea of Thieves world more diverse. I've spent a lot of hours cycling through the auto-generated characters until I found the perfect 1, I would save a character and keep cycling until I had a full ring of saved individuals and then I would remove the worst ones and restart the process until I am satisfied with my character. If you like spending time on characters you should try this approach! Also don't forget... Don't worry about hair and color since you can change them now. In my time that wasn't even an option. (: (Well the color anyway)

  • The main reasoning for not having a detailed character customization was to prevent any one pirate looking alike which I can understand.

With that said I do think their is a compromise that would still full fill every Pirate being different, but giving players greater control over choosing what Pirate they want. Pirates should be able to choose the parameters of how their pirates generate. Like being able to choose hair color, eye color, sex, race, default makeup, default scars, and a general body shape(a maybe on this). Everything else is generated randomly like the pirates face and specific body shape.

It would be more of a narrowing of choices that will allow a player to find a pirate they like faster without rolling through hundreds of pirates they obviously know they won't want and wasting hours of their life to get it.

  • I agree with the op. I spent hours getting my pirate, and its nice and all, but (and i know this may seem silly) i wanna create my own pirate... with blue skin... 😅 the reason is, is this game is what gave me inspiration for a D&D character, a blue swashbuckling tiefling merchant. Like i said, its somewhat silly, but id love to be able to create that character on here (horns and tail aside of course) i would totally stylize my character for picture references if i could. Now, i very highly doubt theyll ever impliment blue skin, and im ok with the pirate i have, but i think itd still be a nice feature to have. Even if it is low on the priority list.

    Like being able to choose

Sex and skin tone would be enough.

  • Hi there,

As this thread is over 10 months old I will lock it. If you would like to continue the conversation please create a new thread.

    Thanks!
