Annoying tactiс

  • There is a new meta in the game, which is really annoying. People try at all costs to climb up the enemy ship, drop the anchor and start jumping around, firing blunderbuss. When people are chased they send the endless stream of invaders to grab on to the ship and start messing around. And it’s fine by itself, it’s just another tactic. The problem is – it’s getting seriously abused. To jump in the water, or fire yourself to the enemy ship is really easy if you practice a little, so this happens again and again. It’s not some cool skill, not something awesome you can manage to do from time to time – it’s the main tactic, and not only in chases. Most people do that during the battle too. No cannon duels, no tactical maneuvering, just crash into the enemy or go in circle around him and spam the invaders, occasionally firing to put a couple of holes in the ship. It wouldn’t be so bad by itself if not the fact that everybody starts jumping around endlessly, spastically firing the blunderbuss. You can’t ignore the hopping enemy, because he will kill you, and you can’t kill him quickly and effectively because of the endless jumping. I’m not trying to say it’s cheating or anything, but it’s
just isn’t fun. SoT is supposed to be a pirate game with many tactics and opportunities, but it quickly becomes a twitch reflex shooter on ships. Everybody jumps and shoots like it is Counter Strike. And the worst part is – the only way to counter that tactic is to do the same. If you try to shoot them with cannons – they just fix the holes, while sending the same guy again and again to jump around and distract you. If you chase them – the same happens. You board them – the same happens. Jumping and firing blunderbuss until one of the crews gets unlucky and they ship sinks. The gunpowder barrels don’t help too – you can’t follow up the successful barrel attack with a jumping j*****s on your back. So you do the same and try to be the lucky ones. It’s just not the right experience for SoT. The way I suggest to fix this is somehow stop the “jumping around tactic”, or limit the possibility to rapidly successfully get on the enemy ship, at least while it’s moving. And, by the way, in constant blunderbuss duels the quality of internet connection starts to play major role. So somebody who has better ping gets a slight advantage Again – don’t think I complain because I’m bad at the game. This tactic does work both ways, but it’s just wrong, and not very fun. Thank you for your time.

  • I personally hate the bun hopping.

  • @sunbozu I always felt jumping should cancel the reload animation.

  • I would agree with adding some kind of jump stamina causing you to not be able to jump over and over again without taking a moment to catch your breath similar to the sword play.

I disagree with anything related to the boarding of ships. Unless you board the enemy vessel, it’s nearly impossible to sink a galleon if they are even moderately capable in terms of repairing the ship. It would be an endless battle until someone runs out of supplies, which is usually cannon balls before planks so you are then stuck with constant ramming.

Adding jump stamina will most likely be all that’s needed.

  • can thank fortnite for the bunny hopping .. best advice is dont get rammed and desiginate ppl to watch ladders when you hear splashing near your ship or when not in direct fighting

  • @admiral-tweedle jumping cancel the reload? actually very smart. Only way I can see to counter it a bit. I swear it didn't happen as much in the alphas but now yea its the main thing to do. I'd say they should hotfix that in and see what happens, take it out if they need to but its so subtle it wouldn't make anyone quit the game or anything just a harmless test.

  • In one of there promotional videos, they promote the idea of jump off your ship to go onto enemies ship chasing you. But I think there should be a speed decrease if you spam jump. reloading while jumping shouldn’t happen but I think eating bananas while being should should stop the animation Cus a player can eat a banana as quick as someone is shooting at them.

  • @usspectre1 I agree. Adding stamina where you can only jump 1-2(3?) times before ur stopped would be best. Boarding ships and the like is one of the best experiences.

  • @neminati a good example to look at is csgo about preventing spamming jump, if you proceed with a third jump in a row, it will slow you down (movement) more and more unless you stoped jumping. I don’t think having you stop right there if you jump three times is a good idea

  • @bobbythemod Oh, yea... that's what I meant. Re-reading I see how you came to that. I meant stop jumping further.

  • Add Grappling hooks you can shoot at the ship and pull it in closer with a crank!

  • @sunbozu getting on ships has been a tactic since the start and is not new. Just kill them as they come up the ladder and while they are spawning put holes in the ship.

When they jump on just have 2 people fight them off as 2 on 1 means your more successful in repelling boarders quickly.

  • I wasn't talking about boarding in genereal as of something bad. It's a fun thing, and you are right when you say, that it was used since beta. What annoys me is the repeated non stop boarding as the main tactic. People did not do that up until recently. I say it's too easy to reach the enemy ship at any moment.

  • There just needs to be a small delay when you hit the ground again after jumping. I think the Halo games have this, at least Halo 1 does. It's not really noticeable unless you try to spam the jump key because you won't be able to directly jump again.

And the air speed needs to be reduced to so that jumping actually makes you easier to hit.

  • I would like a "jump stamina" like people said, preferably with a 2-3 second cool down between jumps, and it should cancel reloading if you jump. All three restrictions should take care of the problem.

  • I hate the combat in this game!!! I want safezones because the PvP isn't fun! People say that pirates had no safe zones but pirates did't hop around and have endless lives! I say make the PvP fun/ at least decent or add safezones

  • I agree, a jump stamina would be a welcome addition. Pirates didn't jump around like Wizard of Oz flying monkeys, they fought toe to toe or had a shoot out. The jumping stuff is lame.

  • I totally agree, i think there should be a stamina bar, so you can only jump maybe twice before your depleted. Stop the ridiculous jumping thing. And also stop the firing under water, from the surface is fine, but from underwater is ridiculous.

  • @badkahr It's called "Halo Jumping" for a reason. That tactic has been around since the original Xbox, and it's never been anything but annoying as hell.

  • @hviiimonster13 Well, to be fair, Pirates didn't shoot themselves out of their cannons either. I mean, I'm all for a jump stamina, or having to stop the reload on the blunderbuss when you are jumping, but lets not preach reality here.

  • Actually it's one of the thing I like the best in SoT. How fast and reactive you can move and jump, movements in general feels really responsive to me and I love that.

However, I can understand where you coming from. I think most Xbox players have an issue with that, they just can't move and follow people that fast and since it is a crossplay game that doesn't make it fair for some people.

I think one of the best fix for that, like already proposed is to take the same path of CS which make you go slower and slower as you jump/crouch. I think this could change the meta as well and make swords worthy again in pvp.

  • I agree that jumping should be linked to stamina, cancel a reload or perhaps both.

One other point that is mentioned is about the firing of flintlock pistols and blunderbuss's underwater. Ever hear the phrase'Keep your powder dry'? Water and gunpowder just don't mix and therefore you shouldn't be able to shoot underwater. Furthermore, if you go into the water then you should have to reload your gun when you come out in order to fire it once again.

    Just my 2c's

  • @bryanexmachina Obviously, but at the same time, a zany ability doesn't mean there isn't some room for a little more realistic combat. It's better to be able to fight toe to toe or to race and see who is quicker on the draw and more accurate vs. trying to shoot a constantly jumping target, in my opinion. The jumping nonsense makes it less fun in my book.

  • As much as i love my 100fps on Mythical with my GTX 1080Ti, beeing able to kill pretty much everyone in 1vs1 situations because im a FPS players since i was like 12(im now 34),a expensve gaming mouse and smooth controls....yeah, its too easy to murder players who doesnt use this tactic well. Some of them will jump round, but they dont hit because they arent used to the fast pace, or are playing with a controller.

As much as i like this kind of gameplay in games, SoT isnt the place for it. I agree that limiting people who has years upon years of practice bunnyhopping and shooting very accuratly, should be implemented. A staminabar would work wonders for players like this, let us jump 2-3 times, and then make us gasp for air or something. Makes combat something where you have to use your brain alittle also, not just your reflexes. Even sprinting should have stamina applied, because now you cant catch players since both are at 100% equal speed, FOREVER.

EDIT: this wasnt meant to bea brag, i just agree that its too easy for experienced players, and we need to be held back just a tad. I dont feel good when killing xbox players and new PC players, as i know they have absolutely ZERO chance at getting good FPS players, so yeah, there should be limitations for how much you can move like crazy.

  • I kinda like to do this tactic, but I've been countered on it loads of time as well.

What you need is a good spotter, it's a responsibility on itself. They can warn the crew to check the ladders or incoming shots. They are pretty easy to counter when they climb up the ladder.

The nametag appearing is even too obvious in my eyes. I hope they remove that.

  • @sunbozu They should make it so that when you jump twice in a row, your second jump becomes smaller, then the third jump even smaller, etc. etc.
Fixes the whole damn thing with kangeroo-pirates.

The name ruins a lot indeed..
Try sneaking on an enemy ship, or get close with a barrel while in the water.
I get you need to know enemy names, but the distance is broken.
Or at least make it so when your underwater the name disappears until on the surface of the water again!

  • @slinkierdisc667

Instead of stamina bars and all of that, what about just increasing the size of the player's hitbox on jump?

  • @slinkierdisc667 I agree matey!
Sneaking should be part of the game, it's Sea of thieves after all! Not Sea of obvious!

  • Everybody is talking about a jump delay like there’s nothing wrong with it. Just wait until you’re climbing rocks or something on a island and you miss a jump and have to wait “2-3 seconds” before trying to jump again. Sure maybe people would cry less about one of the actually fun aspects of the game (boarding and fighting people on their ship) but I can see it bringing up a bunch of other “annoyances” not being able to jump when you want. Also you can jump around too so it’s not like you’re at any disadvantage if somebody wants to board your ship and try and take on your entire crew by jumping.

  • You guys know that jumping is actually a really predictable pattern and actually makes it easier for experienced players to aim at because they know where you’ll be when you land.

It is only a bad thing when facing someone that is really new to fps combat and doesn’t understand this concept.

The only time hopping is good is if you are so close you leave their fov like jumping over them. But if you get that close to someone with a blinderbust, you are one-shot because you can’t jump that far and high.

Straffing is actually a much better tactic for evasion in FPS and in this game.

You seem to be missing alot of points here. Jumping means nothing if the players doesnt have the accuracy and experience. Im a PC player who loves FPS games, and even i dont mind a limitation to my endless jumping to waste other players. And if you cant wait 2-3 seconds because you missed a jump, you shouldnt be able to wait 2-3 seconds after a charge attack either.

  • @badkahr I mean, I constantly bunny hop in almost every shooter I play, long before FNBR.

  • @haxxorsauruz best solution is play and get better at the game how it is. Jumping isn’t game breaking. No reason to change it. Easy.

a PC player with 25 years of practice against a Xbox player with a controller says otherwise.
